To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. CLEvE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at I/Vaco, in the county of McLennan andl State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements .in Scrip-I-Iolders, ofV

The invention relates to a scrip holder, designed particularly for housing in a oo nveniently accessible manner the usual railroad scrip.
The main object of t-he present invention is the provision of a holder arranged within a book cover and constructed to contain the scrip sheet per se, or the scrip sheet and cover therefor, the parts being constructed to insure a proper delivery of the scrip from the superimposed holes thereof and the arrangement of the projected strip for convenient coperation with the cutter, whereby any desired portion of said strip may bej severed.
The invention in its preferred form of de? tails will be described in the following` speci-` cation, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure 1 is a perspective view with the outer or book cover open. Fig. 2 is a rear plan with the book cover open. Fig. 3 is a: longitudinal vertical section through thef holder proper. Fig. l is a transverse sectionon line 1- t of Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6, is a broken perspective of the holder proper showing the auxiliary guard plate partially in place to illustrate its application and use.
Vith particular lreference to the accompanying drawings, the improved holder proper comprises a metallic plate 1 having the side edges thereof bent to provide overlying rectangular flanges 2, said iianges being rectangular in that their sides are ati right angles to the plate and their'upper free edges overhand the plate in spaced parallel relation thereto. 'Ihe flanges thus form guides for the reception of the scrip as will presently appear. The lower edge of the plate is free of projection to providey an entrance opening for the scrip, .while the upper edge has a rounded or rolled flange extension 3 over which the scrip is drawn, the upper plane of said projection being somewhat below the iianges2 in order to permit the passage of the strip.

i which extends transversely of the plate and is in bowed form serving to exert an upward pressure upon the scrip strip and prevent over-running of the same when withdrawing it from the holder. A'bearing late 5 is slidably mounted on the plate 1 pre erably within the guides, t-he plate occupying aposition above the strip serving as a bearing plate between which and the spring the strip passes. The plate 1 is further provided with an abutment 7 which extends throughout the full width of the plate in a position practically coincident with the relatively lower edge of the bearing plate. The abutment is of slightly less height than the depth of the guides and serves to limit the upper position of the superimposed foldsy of the scrip strip, so as to insure the uppermost strip or leaf of said folds being singly withdrawn from the pile, the abutment preventing such folds below the uppermost from being withdrawn from t-he holder, as will be obvious.
Secured to one side of the holder proper and forming in effect a lixed part thereof, is a rod 8, the connection between the holder and rod being preferably formed by cutting the upper and lower ends of the adjacent guide and bending the material thus formed about the rod, as at 9. The connection of the rod to the holder is such that the rod is disposed in spaced parallel relation to the adjacent guide and approximately centrally of the height thereof, and slidably mounted upon the rod is what I term a cutter 10 comprising a strip practically coincident in length with the width of the plate 1 and having one terminal thereof coiled to provide a sleeve bearing 11, which loosely eny circles the rod 8. By this arrangement the cutter is adapted to contact throughout this lengthwith the rear of the plate 1 and is manually adjustable lto any desired posi? tion longitudinally of said plate through the sliding connection of the cutter on the rod. Furthermore by the position of the rod middistant the thickness of the adjacent guide flange and the relatively offset relation of the sleeve 11 to the cutter, there is no projection of the parts beyondA either surface of the holder proper. The rear surface of the plate l, or that portion which the cutter overlies has a marginal line of indicating numerals 12 progressing in multiples in accordance with the successive amounts on the scrip, the numerals vpreferably extending from the lower edge of the plate toward the upper edge. In the present instance, these numerals are shown as successively increasing by 5, and each numeral is arranged in the space outlined by a transverse line, with the distance between the respective ylines corresponding to the similar distance between the separable sections of the scrip.
The holder proper is secured in what ,term a book cover 13 comprising the usual cover sections in which the holder. is hingedly or movably mounted at 14 in any approved or appropriate manner. The inner surface of the back section of the book cover is provided with spaced straps or pockets 15,

The guard plate is formed with a right angled edge flange 18 cocXtensive with the sides and lower edge thereof, said .guard lplate being inserted within the guide flanges so that the plate proper bridges the space between the upper portions of said guide flanges and the depend-ing flanges 18 rest on the plate 1.
.In the use of the device where it is designed to use the scrip strip 19 within the usual cover 20 provided therewith, the

By the peculiar arrangement of the parts :described it will be obvious that the completed article when in closed position forms Ea compact receptacle of a decidedly ornamental character, which may be readily and conveniently carried inV the pocket and which by the peculiar construction of the parts permits the convenient withdrawal of `that portion of the scrip strip rwhich it is designed to sever, with thel remainder of the strip completely housed and protected within the structure.
What is claimed is 1. A scrip holder comprising a main plate formed with guide flanges on its edges', an abutment transverse the plate near one end thereof, said guide flanges and abutment serving to retain the scrip in folded vform within the holder, and strip friction .means carried by the plate beyond the abutment;
