MENTI-IOL INI-IALER AND PENCIL.
This invention relates to a combined menthol inhaler and pencil, the. object of the invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient device of this character including a casing adapted to contain a body of menthol and to permit of the flow therethrough under suction ef air which` will be impregnated with the menthol vapors for inhalation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated in which the casing embodies novel means for holding a charge of menthol and circulating air therethrough, said casing including a removable cap adapted when detached to expose the body of menthol so that it may be employed as a medicinal pencil.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, herein described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through a combined menthol inhaler and pencil constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section o-n the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a casing comprising tubular body and cap sections 1 and 2, the outer end of the cap section being preferably of conoidal or rounded form so that it may be conveniently fitted in the nostrils for inhalation purpose. The inner end of the cap section is adapted to lit over or have a slipjoint connection with the inner end of the body section, which latter is provided with a stop bead or projection against which the cap section is adapted to abut when fully applied.
The device as a whole is in the form of an elongated tubular body of a length and diameter to be conveniently handled, and, if desired, to be carried in the pocket or other suitable receptacle. Fixed within the inner end of the body section 1 is a supporting plate 4 having an out-turned flange 5 bear specification of Letters Patent. patented June 30, 1914.

A chamber is thus provided at the inner end of the cap4 to receive a body of menthol 8, which is of aA `length to project beyond the inner end of the body` section thereof, and said cap carries anv eduction or discharge tube 10 also preferably of slightly tapered form, buty which may be of the same diameter throughout. The outer end of this tube opens through and is fixed to the outer end of the cap, while the inner end of the tube is adapted kto engage over the outer conical' end of a guiding and supporting stud 11 tightly fixed within the opening (S of the plate 4L, whereby the inner end of the tube is closed and the tube firmly supported in position when the can is applied.
The outer end of the cap forms a collection chamber for air impregnated with the menthol vapors, and the tube 10 serves as a conductor through which these vapors are discharged. The air to be impregnated is drawn into the body section 1 through the annular series of openings 12 therein, which openings are normally covered and closed by the inner end of the applied cap, but by slightly drawing out the cap the said openings may be exposed to allow air to enter. The vair entering the body section through the openings 12 passes through the perforations 7 in the plate il, and thence through the tapered passage 9 in the menthol body 8, and thence into the said collection chainber for discharging. It will be observed that the tapered opening in the menthol body exposes the apertures 7 and permits the air valve, When, lio-Wever, the Capris slightly drawn out to expose the openings l2, the inner end of thetubc will also be drawn away from the stud or stopper, thus allowing the impregnated vapors to discharge therethrough. By entirely detaching the cap and tubelO, the body of menthol will be exposed so that it may loel used las a. medicinal pencil in the ordinary Way, as will be readily understood, the body section l serving in this case as a manipulating handle. It will be apparent that when the cap section is iully applied the esca-pe ot' vapors Will be entirely prevented., thus enabling the in closed charge of menthol to be preserved for practically indetnite use.

A device of the character described comprising a body section having air inlets, a cap section detachably mounted upon the body section and adapted to be removed therefrom and adjusted to expose said air inlets, a socket upon the body section having air passages communicating with said body section, a body of menthol fitted Within` and projecting from the socket and provided with a tapering passage communicating Withl said air passages, a stopper carried by thel body section and projecting into said soc-liet; and passage` in the menthol body, and a tnbel carried by the cap and projectinginto thel passage in the menthol body and adapted to bey closedlby said stopper When the cap is fully applied.
2 A. device ot' the character described comprising a tubular body section having air inlets, a supporting plate carried by said body section between said air inlets and the inner end thereof, said supporting platerhaving air passages, a body of menthol resting upon the said supporting plate and partially inclosed by the inner end of said body section', said body of menthol having a passage communicating with said air passages, a stopper upon the plate projecting into said air passagein the menthol body, a cap section detachably mounted upon the body section and adapted to normally inclose the menthol body and cover the inlets and to be adjusted to a prescribed position to expose said inlets, and a discharge tube on the cap section adapted to project into the passage in the menthol body and to be closed by said stopper when the cap'section covers the air inlets and to be moved away from said stopper When said cap section is adjusted to expose the air inlets.
