Description
11. 0'. S IEVERLING.
Plow Clevis Attachment No. 110,080. 0 Patented D60. 13, 1870.
WW 47M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY G. SIEVERLING, OF CARROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-CLEVIS ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 110,080, dated December 13, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. SIEVERLING, of Oarrollton, in the county of Green and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Improved Plow-Olevis; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to regulate the draft of plows, and to change the line of draft, to counteract any eccentricities of plowresistance, when the plow-resistance is not in the vertical line of the plane of the beam; and the nature of this invention consists in a clevis arranged with projecting lateral bars from the plow-beam back to the latter.
To enable those herein skilled in the art to make and use my said invention, I will now more fully describe the same, referring herein to the accompanying Figure l as a top plan; to Fig. 2 as a side plan; to Fig. 3 as a front plan.
The plow-beam A has the clevis attachment A constructed in the usual forms, and having a series of holes in its vertical shank, to which the draft-team attaches. Said clevis A has also the usual pin to secure the same, as required.
To avoid the inconveniences of lateral play when the usual clevis A is used, and more especially to form a clevis attachment that will permit the line of draft to be adjusted in accordance with the plow-draft, as stated to be in the nature of this invention, I connect a series of horizontal bars or plates, B, B, and B having rounded projections b passing through the holes of the clevis-shank A, to which they are secured by a proper pin. The upper and lower ends of said bars protruding from the plow-beam are connected by the braces C 0 secured by screw-bolt to the vertical side of said plow-beam A. Said bars' have alsobetween them the ferrules 0 through which a connectingbolt passes, firmly clampin g said bars. Furthermore, each of said bars B, B and B have proper holes, through which the coupling-pin D passes, securing the link or clevis-joint D, to which the draft-team is attached.
It will be observed that the bolts 40 a, by
means of which the ordinary clevis A and the attachment 0, respectively, are secured to the beam, pass through the latter at right angles to each other. This is an important feature, as the beam, instead of being weakened, is strengthened by each bolt against any tendency of the other to split the wood. Z
The action of my improved clevis is plainly apparent in its properties to regulate the plowdraft as well as the amount of land taken by the land-side. Said clevis will be found especially useful in enabling the plowman to follow the first furrow in the return, as in deep-soil plowing.
I am aware of the patent issued to W. W. Atteberry, dated August 10, 1869, for a plowclevis which provides for adjustment at one side of the beam, but this I do not claim, my invention consisting in the construction and arrangement of parts as above described.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim is- An attachment for ploW-clevises, composed of rigidly-attached perforated bars B B braces C O, and ferrule 0 with pin and link D D, secured to the plow-beam and applicable to an ordinary clevis, A, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
H. U. SIEVERLING.
