Description
N. HATCH.
UNION SUIT.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 30, 1914.
1,100,657, Patented June 16, 1914.
WITNESSES l/V l/E N TOR W0- Z5W BY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN HATCH, or ALBANY, NEW YORK.
UNION SUIT.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, NA'lI-IAN HATCH, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, l nion Suits; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as. will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and tigurcs of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The invention relates to an article of \vearing apparelfmore particularly to union undergarments formen, women and children.
One of the objects of the invention is to construct a union suit to fit the body of the wearer perfectly and securely and to make it very easy to put on and take off the person of the wearer.
Another object is to construct a garment in which it is not necessary to provide the objectionable; lines of buttons and buttonholes orsecuring means which are usual in mensgarments, which extend from the neck thereof to the crotch, thereby preventing the objectionable gaping due to the button structure.
Another object is to provide the union undergarment with the single fastening' means arranged in the front thereof at the center of the chest.
The garment is especially useful for the purpose of protecting the body of the wearer, yet it is so constructed that it is very desirable for the use of Women inasmuch as the lines of the neck portion may be so laid as to be used by Women when they desire to wear outer garments which are open at the neck and chest. The construction is also very desirable for womens garments inasmuch as the fastening means are provided at or about the center of the chest and the front portion of the body part of the garment is so constructed as to fit the bust nicely and is therefore ada. ted for womens wear as will be readily un erstood from the following description. 7 Other objects will appear from the following description and claims.
The garment is to be put on the body of the wearer by inserting the legs into the leg portions in the usual Way, and then the 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

vention, the garment being Shown in its closed position. Fig. 2 is another View of the front of the garment embodying my invention, the garment being shown with the front flaps open. F ig. 3 is also a view of the front of the garment as especially adapted for womens wear scription of the same, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
The garment may be made of either woven or knitted fabric, and except for the features of construction which form my invention, it is made in the usual way, namely, the leg portions may be long or short, the arln portions long or short, the leg and arm ends are ribbed and finished as usual and the border about the neck and body flaps are finished in the usual way. The garment may also be provided with an open and over-lapping fly construction and 1t is provided with the usual open and overlapping substantially longi-- tudinal opening in the seatportion thereof.
The seat portion is constructed in the usual way by means of two substantially triangular patterns or inserts which are secured to the garment and to each other, a fastening means being placed upon the outeredge of one of the inserts and another fastening means to cooperate therewith secured to the.
rear of the garment.
Referring to the drawings: A represents the body portion of the garment, B the leg portions, 0 the center front flap, Done side flap, E the other side flap.
a is the fastening means upon the front flap, and b the means on the two side flaps. My invention is particulary embodied in the following construction: From points 1 In the detailed -de-' and 2 situated upon opposite sides of the body portion at or about the waist line, and
extending upward in a straight or curved line to the point 3 is :1 front flap portion.- Two side flaps forming the remainder of the front portion of the garment extend respectively from points 4 and 5 on the side of the garment also at or about the waist line in a substantially straight or curved line to points 5 at or about the center of the chest ortion and continue on a straightor curved line to the back of the neck at 6. Each of the flaps formed as above described is therefore substantially trian ular in shape and may be so defined. The edges of the center and side flaps are overlapped, so as not to expose the body of the wearer and are finished in a manner to prevent gaping. The three flaps constituting-the front portion of the body are brought together and secured the one to the other at their apices by means of the button a and button holes 6.
While I have shown a button on one portion of the garment and button holes on the other, it is evident that the positions of the two may be reversed. The buttons may of course be made of any suitable material and may be formed of a knot similar to the usual Turks head knot 'of well known construction. The free ends of the flaps may also be secured together by means of a removable button of -the ordinary double head and shank type inserted in button-holes provided in each of the flaps; or by a pin secured thereto.
As shown in Fig. 2, several button-holes usually two in number may be made in the apex of the center flap for the purpose of i usting thebody length of the garment.
he cut of this garment, providing the openin from the waist line up to a point approachin the neck, lends itself to the natural lines and curves of the human body, and it is by reason of this fact that any gaping or sagging of the suit is effectually prevented.
- for detachably securing I have illustrated and described the embodiment of my invention which I believe to be the one best subserving the object which I have in view, nevertheless the invention is not restricted in details except as defi nitely expressed in the claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A union suit the entire front of the body portion thereof above the waist line being normally open from the neck to points upon each side at or about the Waist line, the said opening being bounded at the bottom and sides thereof by three substantially triangular flaps and a single fastening device the apices of the tri',-. angular flaps together.
2. A union suit the entire front of the body portion thereof above the waist line" being normally open from the neck to points upon each sideat or about the waist line, the said opening being bounded at thebottom and sides thereof by three substantially simila 1' triangular flaps and a single co-acting fastening device for detachably securing the apices of the triangular flaps together at a point substantially, at the center of the front body portion.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at the boron h of Manhattan, city and State of New Yori, this 24 day of January, 1914.
