To all whom it may concern of end portions 18 having ears or trunnions Be it known that I, PEnLIn A. DYAR, a 19 journaled in orifices formed in the sides citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suliolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVaste-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to receptacles located in public places to receive waste paper and other debris, the receptacle being adapted to he supported in a position elevated above the ground and to receive the waste at its upper portion and discharge the same at its lower end.

The invention has for its object to provide an improved closure for the lower end of the receptacle adapted to be firmly retained in position to support the contents of the receptacle and to be readily released to permit the discharge of the contents.

The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

My improved receptacle comprises a body 12 preferably made chiefly of sheet metal and adapted to be secured to a vertical support such as a post 13. The body has a receiving opening 1% in its upper portion and is open at its lower end. 15 represents a bottom piece hinged at 16 to one side of the lower end of the body and formed to close said lower end, the bottom piece being of smaller area than the cross sectional area of the interior of the body, and adapted to" wardly from its under side, said member having a recess one end of which is closed and constitutes a stop. To opposite sides of the body is pivoted a wire bail composed of the body, and an intermediate portion 20 adapted to extend across the open end of the body, and to engage the locking member 17 and support the bottom piece. The bail is adapted to be swung outwardly to the right hand dotted line position shown by Fig. 4 to remove the portion 20 from a position under the bottom piece and permit the bottom piece to be swung downwardly as shown by Fig. 3 to release the contents of the receptacle. Before doing this, the bail is swung inwardly to the left hand dotted line position, Fig. 4, and the bottom piece is raised as shown by dotted lines, so that the portion 20 may be moved outwardly under the locking member 17. To again secure the bottom piece, it is first raised. to the dotted line position and the bail is swung inwardly to the left hand dotted line position. The bottom is then allowed. to drop until it rests on the portion 20, the latter being then moved to the intermediate position shown by Fig. 4 until it is arrested by the stop formed by the closed end of the locking member. The bottom is now securely supported against any possibility of accidental displacement. The bottom piece and bail constitute a simple and efficient closure for the bottom of the receptacle, presenting no projections on the exposed vertical portions of the receptacle and being therefore free from liability to engage and tear garments of people passing the receptacle.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A waste receptacle comprising a body which is open at its lower end and has a receiving opening at its upper portion, a bottom of smaller area than the internal cross sectional area of the body, hinged to the lower end of the rear side of the body and having a U-shaped locking member on its under side forming a recess with a closed end, and a supporting bail having end portions pivotally connected to opposite sides of the body and an intermediate por tion adapted to extend across the open end of the body to support the bottom in its operative position and also adapted to swing outwardly from the front side of the body to release the bottom, the bottom being movable upwardly into the body to permit the In testimony whereof I have aflixed my ball to swlng lnwardly across the locking s1gnature,1n presence 01 two wltnesses.
