and arrangement and readily adjustable both in unison and relatively so as to be adapted for a wide range of work.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described and set forth in the appended claims, and is herein represented as embodied in a' double chain-stitch machine of the Singer type.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear side elevation of the machine embodying the present improvements, Fig. 2 a front end elevation of the same with the face plate of the bracketarm removed, Fig. 3 a similar elevational view partially in section in the plane of the needle and presser bars, and Fig. 4 a transverse sectional elevation rearward of the'head of the bracket-arm looking backwardly. Fig. 5 is a detached side view of a portion of the main-shaft with theadjustable feed-actuating eccentric thereon, Fig. 6 a sectional elevation of the same, and Fig. 7 an end view thereof with the main-shaft intransverse section. v
The machine is constructed with the usual base 1, hollow standard 2 and overhanging bracket-arm 3. The base 1 carries the workplate 4 beneath which is journaled the mainshaft 5 having at its forward end the inclined crank 6 embraced by the spaced parallel flanges? of the looper-carrier 8 provided with the looper 9 and journaled upon transverse fulcrum screws 10 in the rocking yoke 11 mounted upon longitudinal fulcrum-screws 12 substantially as represented in the United States patent to Albert Rontke No. 568,702, dated September 29, 1896.
Insuitable bearings in the bracket-arm 3 is mounted the needle actuating rock-shaft 13 having at its rearward end a crank 14 operatively connected with the mainshaft and carrying at its forward end a crankplate 15 operatively connected with a collar 1 6 fixed upon the needle-bar 17 which carries the needle 18 cooperating with said looper 9 in the production of a double chainstitch seam.
' As represented in the United States patent to P. Diehl and A. Grieb, No. 814,027, dated March 6, 1906, upon the main-shaft is fixed by means of a set-scr w 19 a collar 20 formed with a tIELIlSVGI'SG%]1id6-WLY 21 with under-cut edges to which 's fitted the I slide-plate 22 provided with the axially projecting boss 23, constituting the feed actuating eccentric, provided with an elongated central opening 24 embracing the main-shaft to permit its lateral adjustment I upon the collar 20. An adjusting screw 25 with annularly grooved head 26 is introduced into the threaded transverse hole .27 in the collar 20, with the grooves in its head meshing with tongues formed upon the slide-plate 22, whereby the turning of the screw serves to vary the eccentricity of the feed-actuating eccentric as required.
The eccentric 23 is embraced by a strap 28 at one end of a rod 29 whose other end is formed with a similar strap embracing a stud 30 carried by the depending crank-arm 31 of the feed-rocker 32 fixed upon the feedrock-shaft 33 mounted in the bearings 34 and 35 secured to the base 1. Between the spaced lugs 36 upon the feed-rocker is pivoted by means ofthe fulcrum-pin 37 the rearward end of the feed-bar 38 carrying at its opposite end the feed-dog 39 and having a depending laterally extending yoke 40 embracing the feed lifting eccentric 41 upon the main-shaft 5.
Upon the rearward end of the feed rockshaft 33 is fixed the crank-arm 42 carrying a crank-pin 43 embraced by the lower end of a pitlnan-rod 44 whose upper end embraces the crank-pin 45 carried by a crankarm 46 upon the rearward end of a rockshaft 47 mounted in bearings 48 secured to the bracket-arm 3 and having at its forward end the segmental arm 49 provided with the undercut guide-way or channel 50. To the arm 50 is adjustably connected by means of a headed bolt 51 and clamp-nut 52 the up per endof a link 53 whose lower end is'pivotallyconnected with a lateral crank-arm 54 at the rearward end of a rocking pin. 55

j ournaled in the bearing 56 fixed to the head of the bracket-arm and having at its forward end a depending crank-arm 57 pivotally con nected to one end of a link 58 whose opposite end is connected by means of a studscrew 59 with the lower portion of the upper feed-bar 60 below which is secured the feeding foot 61 having serrated forward portion and smooth rearward portion.
The presser-bar 62 carries the usual presserfoot 63 disposed at. the side of the feeding foot 61, and is pressed normally downwardby means of a surrounding spring 64: interposed between a socket in the adjusting bushing 65 and a collar 66 secured to said bar and provided with the lateral lug 67 adapted for engagement with the cam-portion 68 of the lifting lever 69 fulcrumed at 70 upon the head of the bracket-arm. The collar 66 carries a rigid upwardly extending arm 71 to which is connected by means of a stud-screw 72 the extremity of one arm 73 of an angular lever pivotally connected at the junction of its arms by means of a stud-screw 7 4 with the upper end of the upper feed-bar 60. The upper extremity of the upwardly extending arm 75 of this angular lever carries a stud-screw 76 embraced by one end of a link 77 whose opposite end embraces a stud-screw 78 upon a crank-arm 79 fixed upon the forward end of a rocking pin 80 journaled in the fixed bearing 81 and having upon its opposite end a crank-arm 82 pivotally connected by means of a bent link 83 with a stud-screw 84 carried by the needle actuating crank-plate 15.
As will be observed, the eccentric 23 which actuates the feed-rocker 32 and rock-shaft 33 upon which the same is fixed constitutes a common actuator for impartin the lateral or feeding movements to both t e feed-dog 39 and the feeding foot 61. The feeding movements are communicated in the usual way between the feed-rocker and the feeddog by means of the feed-bar 38; and the feeding movements are communicated to the feeding foot 61 from the feed rock-shaft 33 through the link 14 to the upper rockshaft 47', thence through the rocking arms 49, 54 and 57 and the links 53 and 58 to the vibrating feed-bar 60. The reciprocal rising and falling movement-s are imparted to the feeding foot 61 and the presser foot 63 by connections with the needle actuating crankplate 15 upon the upper rock-shaft 13 through the link connection 83, connected crank- arms 79 and 82, link 77 and angular lever 73 75. It will be observed that the stud-screws 72 and 74, connected with the upper feed-bar 60 and presser-bar 62, constitute alternately fulcra for the angular lever 73 75, depending upon which of the work-engaging feet is seated upon the work, the resser-spring 6 1 acting in either case to press the respective work-engaging member downwardly. As
the presser-bar 62 is mounted as usual in fixed hearings in the head of the bracketarm, it is evident that the presser-foot 63 has no lateral movement in addition to its rising and falling movements.
It 1s evident that the employment of the rocking pin or short rock-shaft 55 carried by the head of the bracket-arm parallel with the feed rock-shaft 33, having a connection with the upper feeding member 61 and a train of operative connections supported upon and conforming in general arrangement with the component members of the machine frame, while affording an effective operating mechanism for the upper feed, provides for an unobstructed space over the work-plate beneath the bracket-arm, the use of which has, in similar machines heretofore constructed, been prevented by having the connection 'between the upper and lower feeding members extended either through the work-plate or behind the same substantially in the line of feed, The former arrangement thus provided for operation only upon the edge of the work and rendered the machine unadapted for stitching and fulling or shearing in the body of a garment, such as a skirt, as is evidently desirable. In'practice, the component parts of the upper feed actuating mechanism are so ar ranged and proportioned, and the adjustable connection between the link 53 and the segmental arm 49 is suitably arranged, to enable the upper feeding member 61 to travel in unison with the lower feeding member 39 so as to advance the upper and lower plies of a plurality of superposed plies of material to be fed at the same speed; while the adjustment of the bolt 51 outwardly or inwardly from initial intermediate position upon the arm 49 causes an increased or re duced throw of the feeding foot 61 in relation to the travel of the feed-dog 39 serving respectively to shear or full the upper or the lower layer or ply of material, as may be desired.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In-a'sewing machine, the combination with the main-shaft, a needle, an actuating for imparting reciprocal rising and falling movements to said upper feeding member and the Presser-foot.
2. In a sewin machine, the combination with the main-s aft a needle, an actuating rock-shaft operative y connected therewith, and a loop-taker cooperating with said needle, of feeding mechanism comprising upper and lower feeding members, means connected with the main-shaft for imparting work-advancing movements to said feeding members, means carried by the main-shaft for imparting rising and falling movements to the lower feeding member, a Presser-foot, and common means having permanent connection with the needle-actuating rock-shaft and with said upper feeding member and the presser-foot for imparting reciprocal rising and falling movements to the same.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination with the main-shaft, a needle, an actuating rock-shaft operatively connected therewith, and a loop-taker cooperating with said needle, of feeding mechanism comprising upper and lower feeding members, means for imparting work-advancing movements to said feeding members, means for imparting rising and falling movements to the lower feeding member, a Presser-foot, and common means operatively connected with the needle-actuating rock-shaft and having permanent connections respectively with the upper feeding member and the presser-foot for imparting thereto reciprocal rising and falling movements.
4. In a sewing machine, the combination with stitch-forming mechanism including a reciprocating needle'and an actuating rockshaft therefor, and lower feeding mechanism, of upper feeding mechanism comprising a swinging feed-bar, a feeding foot fixed thereto, and means for imparting thereto to-and-fro work-advancing movements, a spring-pressed presser-bar, a presser-foot secured thereto and disposed adjacent said feeding foot, a rock-lever, fulcrum-studs carried by said swinging feed-bar and presserbar and upon which said rock-lever is mounted at separated points, a lifting rockshaft, a crank-arm thereon, a link connection intermediate the last-named crank-arm and said rock-lever, and means connected shaft, and means connected with the mainshaft for actuating said rock-shaft, upper feeding mechanism comprising a swinging feed-bar and a feeding foot carried thereby, an upper feed rock-shaft provided with two crank-arms, a link connection between one of said crank-arms and said swinging feedbar, an intermediate feed rock-shaft provided with lateral crank-arms, an adjustable connection between one of the crank-arms of said intermediate feed rock-shaft and the second crank-arm of'the upper feed rockshaft, an operative connection between the second crank-arm of said intermediate feed rock-shaft and the primary feed rock-shaft, from which said intermediate rock-shaft derives its operative movements, a springpressed presser-bar, a presser-foot carried thereby adjacent said feeding foot, a rocklever, fulcrum-studs carried by said swinging feed-bar and presser-bar and upon which said rock-lever. is mounted at separated points, a lifting rock-shaft provided with a crank-arm, a link connection intermediate said crank-arm of the lifting rock-shaft and HENRY J.
