to provide a wagontongue which may be at:

'tached to any wagon, said tongue embodying adjustable means whereby the tongue may be attached to wagons having hounds varying in width.

Another object'of my invention is to provide means for securing a doubletree to the tongue, said means also serving the purpose of bracing the parts of the adjusting means.

Another object is to provide an adjustable tongue which is simple, very durable, eflicient in operation, and which may be manufactured at small cost, and one which may be easily and quickly assembled or disassembled, and which may be quickly secured to the hounds of a wagon.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and

illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views, and in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the tongue proper comprises a hollow tube 5, which is tapered from the rear to the front end thereof, and which is provided on its under side with the slot 6, running the entire length of the tongue. Near the rear end of tongue 5, is secured a pair of metal cross arms 7 and 8, said arms being positioned one above the other and secured one to the upper and one to the lower face of saidtongue by means of a bolt 9, the central portion of said arms being curved to conform tov the periphery of said tongue,

and the ends of said arms extending at right angles to said tongue, said ends being'spaced from each other throughout their length; U-shaped clips 10, are secured adj acent the ends of arms 7 and 8, by means of bolts 11, and adapted to engage said clips are the rear inwardly bent ends of adjusting bars 12, said bars being secured in said clips by tightening the nut 18 on bolt 11, thereby drawing the ends of arms 7 and-8, together ,and thus'clamping said clips on said bars- Forwardly of cross arms 7 and 8, a pair of angle irons 14:, are secured to tongue 5, one on each side of the latter, the front portions. of said angle irons being secured to said tongue by means of bolts 15, the rear portions of said irons being bent-outwardly from said tongue and have their rear ends doubled under to form spring'clips 16. The front iiibent ends of bars 12, are adapted to engage clips 16, andto be secured therein bymeans of bolts 17. For bracing irons 14:, and also for forming -a rest for a do-ubletree, I provide a substantially triangular shaped plate 18, which has ofi'set flanges 19, formed along its opposite edges, said flanges adapted to rest against the top faces of the outwardly bent portions of angle irons 1 1, and to be secured thereto by means of bolts 17 and bolts 20. The central portion of plate 18, is adapted to rest against the top surface of tongue 5, and is rovided with an opening 21, for the receptlon of a pivot pin,

passed through said hounds and through openings 2%, in said bars and tongue, for securing the bars to the hounds.

In adjusting my tongue with wagons having hounds of varying widths, all it is necessary to do is to loosen the nuts on bolts 11 and 17, Whereby the space between the bars 12, may be adjusted at Will, and said bolts may then be tightened, securely holding said bars in adjusted position.

Although I have-described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of'the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters-Patent is,

l. A vehicle tongue comprising a tube, arms secured thereto, one above the other, said arms spaced from each other, angle irons secured to said tube and diverging in opposite directions therefrom, side bars, means for clamping said side bars to said arms, the rear ends of said angle irons being doubled under and adapted to clamp said side bars, and a plate adapted to brace said angle irons' -end to'afford a rest for a doubletree,

2. A vehicle tongue comprising a tube,

cross arms secured thereto on opposite sides thereof, said arms being spaced from each other, U-shaped clips secured to said arms on the outer ends thereof, side bars having inbent front and rear ends, the rear ends of said side bars adapted to engageisaid U-shaped clips, bolts passing through said arms and clips, whereby the rear ends of said side bars may be clamped in said clips, angle irons secured to said tube and diverging oppositely therefrom, the rear ends of said angle irons being turned under, the front inbent ends of said side bars adapted to engage said under turned ends, bolls adapted to pass through said angle irons and under turned ends for clamping-the front inturncd ends of said side bars, and a plate adapted to be secured to said angle irons for bracing the same, said plate allording a rest for a doubletree.
