Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, WILLIs H. Dn WOLFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel Knob- Spindles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in knob spindles, such as are used in connection with door locks, and it applies more particularly to that class of spindle commonly known as a swivel spindle, in which the spindle is made up of two members, which permits a slight rotary movement, relatively, as between the two members.
The object in the present instance is to provide a knob spindle in which the swivel action is positive, that is, in which there can be no binding as between the two members of the spindle, but in which the two members will be positively locked against disengagement with each other.
Another object is to accomplish this without the addition of any parts not commonly used on devices of this character.
With these objects in view, I have con structed a device made up of a male and female member, which members are held to gether by means of the pin commonly used to position the spindle or latch hub.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view, in enlarged form, of my spindle, partly in section, one of the knobs being shown in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the meeting ends of the spindle members, with the hubs removed.
In the drawings :'The numeral 1 designates the male and 2 the female member, which jointly, form the spindle. The male member is formed with an annular groove 3 in close proximity to the end of its reduced, cylindrical portion 4, which reduced portion is adapted to enter and move freely, in a rotary direction, in the cavity 5 in the end of the female member. This female member 2, is provided with a single perforation 6, extending entirely through it, and about midway between the longitudinal center and one of the side walls of the member, and its location with relation to the end of said female member, is such that when the two members are joined, as illustrated, the said perforation will register with the annular groove 3 in the reduced end of the member 1.
The numeral 8 designates the spindle hubs, which are located, as usual, at the center, as to distance between the knobs, and fit loosely on the spindle. The positioning of these hubs is accomplished by the pin 10, which pin, in the present construction, enters the perforation 6 in the member 2 and engages the reduced end 4: of the member 1 by entering the groove 3 which is in register with said perforation; the length of the reduced end t being such that when the parts are so secured, the meeting faces or end faces of the two members will approach but not contact with each other, thus permitting the necessary swivel action or partial rotary movement as between the two members of the spindle, and still prevent any binding action. It will be noted therefore, that with this construction the two spindle members are securely held together with the pin usually employed for positioning the hubs, thus overcoming the necessity of employing an additional part; and that the parts when thus secured, are free to move with the swivel action required without the danger of tightening, as is the case when screw threaded joints are employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is In a door knob spindle, the combination of a male member formed with a reduced, cylindrical projection at one end, said projection having an annular groove, and a female member, formed with a cavity adapted to receive the cylindrical projection on the male member and a perforation formed in said female member at right angles to its axial line and in register with the groove on the male member when said members are joined, with a spindle hub loosely mounted on the spindle, and a pin adapted to pass through the perforation in the female me mher and to engage the groove in the male 5 member, and to hold said hub in proper position on the spindle.
