To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, I-IoMER V. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lin coln, in the county of Lancaster and State ofl Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescopic Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Same.
as are usually made of paper and like stock, although I do not wish to be limited to this material; and more particularly it relates Ato such receptacles as are usually made from folded blanks.
The object of the same is to produce a teli escopic receptacle with orwithout a cover, which latter is also capable of enlargement to fit the body when enlarged, the whole being used for containing material such as index cards which increases in bulk and therefore needs a receptacle capable of being increased in size in at least one direction. This and other objects are accomplished by constructing the box in a manner hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of this box closed and tied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same box open and its parts distended. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section of one end of the box, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is a perspective detail of the intermediate section. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of one end of the box. Figs. 6 and 7 are sectional views on `the lines 6--6 and 7-7 respectively of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a perspective detail of a modified form of the top or cover.
In the drawings herewith I have shown the box in proportions adapting it for use in filing legal papers, and I have illustrated the same as having a cover, a cord or tape being provided to be tied around the box and its cover and to hold the latter closed. However, I do not wish to be limited to the proportions nor of course to the materials of parts, as the boxis susceptible of wide modilications in its dimensions; the cover may be omitted entirely, or may be made to telescope as shown in Fig. 8, and whereas I have shown the box as consisting of a rear section, a front section, and an intermediate section, it may be made up of a smaller or larger number of sections. On the understanding that the drawings herewith are illustrative merely of one embodiment of my invention, I will proceed to a description of the details of the forms thereof illustrated therein. The front section of this box comprises a front panel 1 turned inward at its lower edge into a bottom 2, and two ends 3 which are turned inward from the extremity of the front panel and which themselves i have bottom flaps il, turned under and se- This invention relates to receptacles suchl cured beneath the bottom 2. In like manner the rear section comprises a rear panel 5, a bottom 6, two ends 7 and iaps 8 beneath the ends turned in under and secured to the bottom. The rear panel as illustrated also carries the cover 9 whose rear edge 9a is inset into the upper edge of the panel. The intermediate section, 0f which but onev is shownin the drawings, comprises a vbottom 10 overlying the rear edge of the bottom 2 of the front section and underlying the rear edge of the bottom 6 ofthe rear section, and upright ends 11 rising from the bottom 10, each standing inside one front end 3 and outside the adjacent rear end 7. It will be clear that if the intermediate section were duplicated or repeated, a much larger box than shown would result. While any form of fastening device might be employed, I have shown a string or cord 12 attached to the rear section at the point 13, and when the box is closed upon its contents with the flap 14 of the cover 9 turned down either inside or outside the upper edge of the front panel 1, the fastening cord or tape is carried around the box and knotted in a manner which will be clear.
When means is to be provided whereby the several sections are slidably connected with each other, the box may bertelescoped and enlarged as its contents grow in size; but if the cover shown is employed,'I prefer to provide it with a number of transverse score lines 15 on any of which it may be folded to form the flap 14 as being perhaps the simplest way of providing for the enlargement of the cover to keep pacey with the enlargement of the box body. l

There are two vsuch tongues near the upper edge of the lend panel 11 projecting downward, and two near the lower edge of this panel projecting upward and alining with the other two; and this structure is duplicated in the other end panel of the intermediate section.
With a boX `constructed as illustrated in the drawings, there are four straps in the front section, and four in the rear section, and these eight straps are engaged by tour tongues on each end panel of the intermediate section. The straps all stand horizontal and the tongues all stand vertical, and this permits the latter to be strung through the slits 2O and around the straps as Thereafter the inner ends of the tongues which stand vin alinement with each other are connected by any suitable means such as pieces pasted or stitched thereover and forming seals as at 25, and therefore the tongues now become in yeffect upright strips.
If all the strips are made of liberal width,
the several sections can now be telescoped lupon each other in 'a manner which will be clear. In the drawings I have shown this arrangement as duplicated once at the midlength of the bottom, though if the box be long it might have two such sliding connections within its bottom. The construction here need not be described in detail, further than to say that the seals are omitted in the drawings and may even be omitted from the completed articles as the necessity for them in this part of the receptacle is not so pressing. In Fig. 8 I have shown the sameconstruction as duplicated within the vtop or cover of the boX, whereby this element is made up of panels 9 and 9 and the latter carries a smaller flap lli from which the score lines 15 may be omitted. A detailed description of the construction of the strap and tongue need not be given in this connection, as it follows closely that given above, but here I would employ the seal 25 because 'the cover is much used and the tongue is quite liable to become broken. In all places, however, it thematerial of the boX were stift' such as tin, it might be possible to omit the seals entirely, although even then they might be used if great strength was desired. Although not necessary to illustrate, it is obviously quite possible to make each section of a boX which is telescopic as shown, telescopic in the other direction Aso that the length of the box as well as its width might be increased as desired. lIhe uses and advantages of such a receptacle need not be elaborated here.
.What is claimed as new is:
l. A fiat member provided with a strap; combined with a second flat member overlying the first and provided with a pair of parallel slits at right angles to the strap and meeting at one end to produce an interposed tongue, the tongue passing under the strap and being narrower than the length of said strap, and a seal connecting the tip of the tongue to the body of the second member outside its slit and beyond the end of the tongue.
2. A flat member provided with two pairs ot parallel slits producing two parallel straps; combined with a second iiat member overlying the iirst and provided with two alined pairs of parallel slits at angles to the first-named slits, the members of each pair being united at their ends nearest the other pair to produce an interposed tongue, and a seal standing between said pairs and connecting the free ends of said tongues to this member, each tongue passing under a strap.
3. A flat member provided with a pair of parallel slits producing an interposed strap; combined with a second iiat member overlying the first and provided with a pair of slits at right angles to the irst-na1ned slits throughout most of their length and united at one of their ends, thereby producing between them a tongue having one free extremity, and a seal covering the united ends of these slits and attaching the tip of the tongue to the last-named member, the tongue passing under the strap and the latter being longer than the width of the tongue.
4. The herein described telescopic box made up of a front section, a rear section, and an intermediate section, each section having bottom and end panels and the front and rear sections respectively having front and rear panels, pairs oi horizontal slits in the ends of the front and rear sections producing straps, and pairs of upright slits near the front and rear edges of the ends of the intermediate section united at one end to produce tongues between them, pairs of transverse slits across the bottom panels of the front and rear sections producing straps between them, pairs of longitudinal slits near the front and rear edges of the bottom panel of the intermediate section united at one end to produce tongues between them,
