To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Bonner M. W'HITE and EARL T. ADAMs, citizens of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dumping-WVagon, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dumping wagons, one of its objects being to provide a wagon of this character the body of which is comparatively low, the wagon having every appearance of an ordinary wagon.
Another object is to provide a dump wagon which can be easily operated, the body of which is mounted on a single joint so positioned that the load will be evenly distributed.
Another object is to provide a dump wagon practically leak-proof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7 In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is .a side elevation of the wagon, one of the positions of the body being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one corner portion of the body of the wagon.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 and 2 designate the front and rear axles respectively of the vehicle, any suitable structure indicated generally at 3, being provided for supporting above the front axle 1, the front portion of a main frame 4 of the wagon. The rear end of this frame 4 supports the tail box or boot 5, the front edges of the sides of which are curved and concentric with a pivot rod 6 extending across the frame a near the center thereof. The back of the boot 5 is closed and inclined downwardly toward the lower edges of the curved edges 7 of the boot, this back being indicated at 8. The boot is held securely to the frame 4 by a suitable bracing and connecting frame 9 shown particularly in Fig. 3, one of these frames being located at each side of the vehicle. Standards 10 are formed 'of the latch while a head 15 is formed at the lower end of the latch. A bracket 16 is secured to the inner side of frame l and ex tends inwardly therefrom so as to constitute a track. That side of the track nearest the frame is cut away, as at 17 so as to receive a reinforcing strip 18 the ends of which are attached to the end portions of the latch 13. Thus it will be seen that a portion of the track 16 extends between the latch 13 and its strap 18. As shown in the drawings the slot 14% is formed not only in the latch 13 but also in the upper end portion of the strap 18. A roller 19 is interposed between the latch 13 and strap 18 and extends transversely of'and above the track 16. A lifting wedge 20 extends between latch 13 and strap 18 and under roller 19, this wedge being mounted on anti-friction rollers 21 adapted to travel along track 16. A shifting rod 22 extends forwardly from the front or small end of wedge 20 and is mounted in suitable guide cars 23 extending inwardly from the side of frame t. A collar 24- is formed on or secured to the front or small end of each wedge 20 and is connected to the adjacent ear 28 by a spring 25 which opcrates to pull forwardly on the collar 24 and wedge 20 so as to move it partway toward the front limit of its path of movement. A transverse shaft 26 is journaled on the front portion of frame at and has depending crank arms 27 connected to respective rods 22. This shaft 26 may be shifted by means of a lever 28 and any suitable means such as a segment 29 and a dog 30 may be employed for locking the lever and shaft against movement.
Tiltably mounted. on the cross rod (3 is a wagon body 31, the front and sides of which are closed while the rear end thereof is open, the side walls of the body being curved at their rear ends so as to be concentric with the rod (3 and to lie close to the curved edges '1' of the boot 5. Extending acros the rear edge of the bottom of body 31 is a cross strip 32 the ends of which project laterally so as to move into engagement with the heads 15 0f latches 13. This cross strip 32, when in its uppermost position, bears against the bottom of the boot 5.
It will be apparent that when the latch head 15 is extended under strip 32 and the wedges 20 are drawn forwardly, the said wedges will exert lifting actions upon the rollers 19 and the latches 13 so as thus to cause the head 15 to bind strip 32 against the bottom of boot 5 and prevent leakage at the joints between the body and the boot. hen it is desired to dump the body 31, lever 28 is shifted o as to push rods 22 rearwardly. lVedges 20 will thus be shifted rearwardly along the track 16, thereby permitting the latches 13 to slide downwardly. Furthermore during the final portion of this rearward movement of the wedges 20, springs 25 will be placed under tension and the collars will be brought against the latches 13 and straps 18 so as to cause the latches to swing rearwardly out of engagement with the cross strip 32. Consequently the body 31 is free to dump. In order to expedite the dumping of the body, a handle 33 may be pivotally and slidably mounted upon a pin 3% extending laterally from the front end portion of body 31. Stop blocks 35 can be provided adjacent the pin 34: and, by swinging handle 33 upwardly and then sliding it rearwardly so as to contact with the two blocks 35, it can be used efficiently for the purpose of elevating the front end of the body 31 so as to cause the rear end to swing downwardly, the body thus assuming the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This handle can also be employed for returning the body to its normal position. It is to be understood that when the body 31 has been dumped, as described, and lever 28 ha been released, springs 25 will shift the rods 22 and the wedges 20 forwardly short distances so as thus to remove the collars 24: from engagement with the latches 13. Consequently the latches will swing back to upright positions so that, when the body 31 is swung upwardly at its rear end, the cross strips 32 will engage the heads 15 and be supported automatically by them. By then drawing the wedges 2O forwardly by means of lever 28, the said wedges will exert lifting actions upon the rollers 19, thus causing the heads 15 to clamp the cros strip 32 tightly against the bottom of the boot 5, thereby sealing the joint.
What is claimed is 1. A dumping wagon including a main rame, a body mounted to swing therein about a transverse axis, a supporting latch mounted to slide and swing relative to the main frame, means upon the body for engagement with the latch when the body is moved toward its closed position, a lifting element, means for actuating the same, and means upon the latch and frame respectively and cooperating with the lifting element for sliding the latch to close the body upwardly.
2. A dumping wagon including a main frame, a body mounted to tilt therein about a transverse axis, a latch slidably and pivotally mounted relative to the frame, means upon the body for engaging the latch during the movement of the body toward its closed position, a lifting element slidably mounted relative to the frame and held against downward movement, means on the latch and cooperating with said lifting element for elevating the latch and the engaged portion of the body during the movement of said element in one direction.
3. A dumping wagon including a main frame, a body mounted to tilt therein about a transverse axis, a latch slidably and pivotally mounted relative to the frame, means upon the body for engaging the latch during the movement of the body toward its closed position, a lifting element slidably mounted relative to the frame and held against. downward movement, means on the latch and cooperating with said lifting element for elevating the latch and the engaged portion of the body during the movement of said element in one direction, and means for releasing the latch from the body during the movement of said element in the opposite direction.
4. In a dumping wagon the combination with a main frame and a boot at the rear end thereof, of a body tiltable about a transverse axis within the frame and normally registering at its rear end with the boot, means extending across the bottom of the body and laterally therebeyond for bearing upwardly against the boot when the body is closed, a latch for engagement by said means during the movement of the body toward closed position, slidable means for elevating the latch to bind said first named means against the boot to complete the closing movement of the body, and means for lifting the latch from said first named means to release the body.
5. In a dumping wagon, a main frame, a body mounted to tilt therein about a transverse axis, a latch mounted to slide and swing relative to the frame, a track fixed upon the frame, a wedging member slidable on the track, means on the latch for engagement by said wedging member to elevate the latch during the movement of the member in one direction, means upon the body for engaging the latch during the movement of the body toward closed position.
6. A dumping wagon including a main frame, a body mounted to tilt therein about a transverse axis, a latch mounted to slide and swing relative to the frame, means on the body for engaging the latch during the movement of the body toward closed position, a guide element fixed relative to the frame, a lifting element slidable on said guide element, means on the latch for engagement by the lifting element for shifting the latch upwardly to complete the elevation of the body at its rear end, and means for releasing the body from the latch.
7. In a dumping wagon the combination with a main frame, of a body mounted to tilt therein about a transverse axis, a latch mounted to slide and swing relative to the frame, means on the body for engaging the latch during the movement of the body upwardly toward closed position, a guide, a wedging element movable on the guide, means on the latch and cooperating with said element for elevating the latch to complete the upward movement of the body, and means movable with the Wedging element for disengaging the latch from the body when said element is moved in one direction.
8. In a dumping Wagon the combination with a main frame, of a body mounted to tilt therein about a transverse axis, a latch mounted to slide and swin relative to the frame, means on the body for engaging the latch during the movement of the body upwardly toward closed position, a guide, a wedging element movable on the guide, means on the latch and cooperating with said element for elevating the latch to complete the'upward movement of the body, means movable with the Wedging element for disengaging the latch from the body when said element is moved in one direction, and yielding means for holding the wedging element normally in a predetermined positlon.
