REINFORCEMENT FOR SHEET METAL AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES A.N1cHoLAs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Reinforcement for Sheet Metal and the like, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide improved means to reinforce the open end of an ice can or other receptacle so as to prevent the receptacle from being bent out of shape or broken.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention; Figure 1 is a sectional perspective of a portion of the side of the receptacle showing the construction of the marginal reinforcement at the top and also the location of the seam along the side. Fig. 2 is a section through the marginal reinforcement showing an intermediate step in the manufacture thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the reinforcing bar 1, of steel or other suitable material, is suspended in a sheet metal sleeve 2, said sleeve 2 consisting of a strip of sheet metal having one of its long edges bent over to form the lip 3 and the other long edge bent over to form a double lip consisting of the external fold l and the internal fold 5. Said folds 4c and 5 are bent down upon the lip 3 and together therewith form a compound lip. From the main body 6 extends a lip or selvage portion 7 which is extended into a hook-shaped ledge 8 having an inner bend or fold 9. Said folds 8 and 9 are bent down upon the compound hook of the sleeve 2 to hold the reinforcing bar 1 in place as shown in Fig. 1. Both of the overlapping extensions 3 and 4 project into the hook formed by the bend or fold 9 thus forming a firm, substantial compound lip which the hook member engages to support the reinforcing bar 1. Owing to the lip 5 being directed back under the middle lip 3,
as best shown in Fig. 1, a smooth bend is provided at the lower end of the three-fold compound lip, so that a smooth, closely fitting surface is provided for the part that Specification of Letters Patent.

engages the inner surface of the supporting hook formed by the parts 8 and 9.
In applying the reinforcement the compound lip consisting of the folds 3, 4L and 5 is bent to extend at right angles to the main body 6, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and the marginal portions 8 and 9 are then bent therearound. Then the parts are bent down to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
I claim:
1. The combination, with the main body of sheet metal or the like, of a reinforcing bar, a sleeve extending around said bar, said sleeve consisting of a sheet of material having an interior lip and having also an exterior lip formed by extending the other margin of said sleeve out around said interior lip thereof and then directing said margin back under said interior lip to form a three-fold compound lip; and a lip projecting from the main body and embracing said compound lip to support the reinforcing bar.
2. The combination, with the main body of sheet metal or the like, of a reinforcing bar along the margin of said body, a sleeve of sheet metal surrounding said bar and having overlapping edge extensions bent over at one side of said sleeve exterior thereto, and a lip or selvage portion extending from the main body, said selvage portion forming a hook bent down upon opposite sides of the overlapping edges of said sleeve to hold said sleeve and bar in place, the overlapping area of said extensions of the sleeve extending into the hook portion of the selvage.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, this 20th day of October 1913.
CHARLES A. NICHOLAS.-
