METALLIC TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, EDWIN J. MYERS, citizen of the United States, residing at Toppenish, in the county of Yakima and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in metallic railway ties and rail fastening devices used in connection therewith; and it consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and effective means for quickly clamping track rails to the metallic tie which is of such construction that it will be effectively locked to the track rails and will tend to prevent longitudinal and transverse shifting of them.
The above and other objects are attained in the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a cross section through a pair of track rails showing one form of my improved tie and rail fastening device, in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sections taken OIlIllIlGS 4.4 and 5{i respectively of F ig- 3; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the metallic tie; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view ofone of the clamp members.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 denotes the body of my metallic tie which is of concavo convex shape in cross section, its concave side being turned downwardly so that the angular lower edges 2 of the tie will embed themselves in the ballast or. road bed and the tie will consequently be effectively retained in position. The con vex upper side of the tie body has formed at suitable distances from its ends, fiat seats 3 for the track rails 4. At one or both ends of the tie there may be formed lips 5 which overlie the outer edges of the seats 8 so as to engage the outer base flanges of the track rails but in the embodiment illustrated, the lip 5 is formed only on the right hand end of the tie. In connection with the lip 5 on said. end is shown a tie clamping member 6 and on the other or left hand end of the tie is shown two of such members 6, two being used when the lip 5 is omitted. Each of these clamping members 6 consists of a curved or concave body having a thickened or reinforced central portion 7 on its bottom face and from the center of which projects a hook-shaped lug 8 having a beveled end 9. The body portion of the clamp member 6 has its depending edges or flanges 10 formed with transversed alincd openings 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 7. The bodies of the clamp members Gare adapted to fit in correspondingly shaped seats 12 formedon the upper side of the tie on one or both ends of the rail seats 3 and when the clamp members 6 are in position, their thickened portions 7 rest on flat seats 13 in which are formed sockets 14. to receive the hook-shaped lugs 8. Transverse openings 15 intersect the sockets 14 and contain bolts, pins or similar members 16 with which the hook-shaped lugs 8 engage as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Transverse openings 17 pierce the body of the tie and are adapted to aline with the openings 11 in the clamp members 6 so that when the latter are in position, bolts or similar removable fasteners 18 may be passed through such alincd openings as seen in Fig. 4 to retain the clamp member in position. The clamp members 6 have their inner ends, that is, their ends nearest the track rails, formed with overhanging lips 19 which engage the base flanges of the rails t to securely retain them on the seats 3.
In use, the track rails 4 when being fastened to the tie are placed on the seats 3 and their outer flanges engaged with the lips 5 when the latter are used. The clamp members 6 are then dropped into place and their hooks 8 hooked under the bolts or pins 16, and when their bodies dro into the seats 12 so that the openings 11, 1 aline, the bolts 18 are placed in position to effectively retain all parts in firm engagement with each other. Any time it is necessary to re move the track rails, the bolts 18 may be removed and the clamp plate 6 unhooked from the pins or bolts 16.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation, of the invention will be readily understood without requiringa more extended explanation.
