Description

E. L. GOMBES.
ATTACHMENT FOR TABLES AND OTHER SUPPORTS.
APPLIOATIOH FILED DBO. 5, 1912.
9 4 2 Patented June 2, 1914;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD-L. GOMIBES, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2, 1914,
Application filed December 5, 1912. Serial No. 735,030.
To all whom it may concern Be it-known that I, EDWARD L. CoMBns, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Tables and other'Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide tables or other supports with simple, economical and eflicient swingtray attachments for holding smokers refuse and with trays upon which to'stand beverage glasses. The attachments are each preferably provided with a clip by which to conveniently secure a carton of matches thereto, and said attachments are especially designed for tables on which games of cards, chess, checkers, dominoes, etc, areplayed.
Figure l of the drawings represents a sectional view of a fragment of a table and one of my improved attachments therewith, the attachment being extended and the view indicated by line 1-l in the next described showing; Fig. 2, a plan view of the extended attachment partly broken away and the fragment of table in horizontal section, the view being indicated by line 2-2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a similar view illustrating said attachment contracted and swung in out of the way.
Referring by numerals-to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, 4- indicates thetop of a table and 5 a frame-strip under the same. The frame-strip is provided with a clear ance-slot 6, longitudinally thereof through which to swing the attachment herein specified, and communicating with the slot is an upper recess 7 in said strip. Held by a pivot 8 in said recess on a wear-plate 9 is a shank extension 10 of the centrally open fiat top 10 of a circular cage having a flat bottom 11, the top being provided with a radial slot in communication with its central opening. Bars of the cage are sleeves 12 on pins 13, the ins being upset at their ends in the top an bottom of said cage. Another pin 13 is made to serve as a pivot for the shank 14 of'a countersunk ring 14: in which to seat I a removable tray 15, said shank being sup ported on a spacing-block 16 on the cagebottom. 7
Depending from the underside of the casebottom 11 is an angular clip 17 by which to support a carton 18 of matches. The clip herein shown is a double right-angle strip of otherwise fiat spring-metal its flange 17 being fastened by a screw 19 to the cagebottom and its vertical portion provided with a finger aperture through which to push out the drawer of the match carton. Prongs are struck up from the horizontal lower portion of said clip to embed them selves in the draw r-casing of said carton, one of the prongs 20 being shown in Fig. 1.
The pivotal cage and parts therewith constitute a table attachment in accordance with my invention the same being contracted by swinging the ring 14 and tray therewith into said cage so that the whole assemblage may be swung in under the top of the table to which it is connected, this contraction and out of the way position of said attachment being shown by Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the above described at tachment is shown as it appears swung out from under the table-top and extended by swinging the ring and tray therewith out of the cage, the clip for the match carton being so disposed in connection with the underside of the bottom of said cage as to be convenient to a person seated at the table. The tray 15 serves as a holder for the refuse of a smoker, and the cage, clear of said tray or stand and the ring therefor serves also as a tray upon which to support a goblet or other beverage glass. The slot in the cage-top affords clearance for the stem of a goblet and the central opening in said cage-top has the same function for a tumbler form of beverage glass.
Without departure from the scope of my invention, as herein claimed, the detail thereof may be varied in practice, and an attachment in accordance with my invention may have pivotal suspension from a shelf, wallbracket or other support'the same as from the table-top herein specified.
I claim:
1. A tray in the form of a cage for 1votal connection with a support and w ich has a centrally open radially slotted top, to-
gether with another tray having pivotal support'in connection with the cage to be swung in and*out of the same.
2. A tray i'n the form of a stand for pivotal connection with a support, a ring in pivotal connection with the stand to. be
swung in -and out of register with the same, and a removable tray for which the ring constitutes a seat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 10 I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses;
EDWARD n. OOMBES.
