To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORMEROD DUCK- wonrn, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland and the Isle of Man, residing in Norristown, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Pillows, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to provide a pillow of such construction as to be particularly adapted for use in warm weather; the arrangement of its parts being such that it is cool and possesses a springy surface; is inexpensive in construction and readily maintained in an operative, sanitary conchtion.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pillow particularly adapted for the use of invalids, which shall have its parts so arranged as to permit of an adjustment to vary the inclination of that one of its surfaces designed to support the head or body of the user. 7 o

I further desire that the pillow constructed according to my invention shall be so made that the body of fabric directly supporting the head of the user may be conveniently removed and replaced, or may, if desired, be conveniently enveloped in a casing or cover; it being also desired that the tension of the head supporting band may be conveniently and quickly varied.

These objects and other advantageous ends I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view on a reduced scale illustrating a pillow made according to my invention; Fig. 2, is an enlarged transverse vertical section of the pillow shown in Fig. 1; and Figs. 3 and 4, are respectively a horizontal and a vertical section on the lines aa and b-b Fig. 2.

In the above drawings, I provide a supporting frame 1 consisting of two substantially parallel, horizontally placed bars 1 and 1 connected at some point between their ends by transverse braces 1 and having their ends turned upwardly and inclined at an angle of about 15 to the vertical, as indicated at 2 and 3. These latter extensions are substantially parallel to each other and those at each end are connected by a bolt or spindle 4: on which is movably mounted a roller 5, which in this form of my invention is preferablyv cut away for almost the entire length of its body, in order to lighten its construction. In each of the base bars l and 1 a turn buckle 6 is preferably connected, whereby the two parts of the frame on opposite sides of said turnbuckles may be moved apart or brought together, as desired.

Extending around the rollers 5 is a fabric head supporting band 7 of canvas, leather, or other suitable material whose ends are yieldingly connected to each other, between the top run of said band and the bottom of the frame, by springs 8, detachably connected to said ends by hooks 9 which enter eyeleted openings in the ends of said band 7. The top run of the band 7 preferably lies in a plane at about 15 to the horizontal, and is designed to support the head or body of the user, so that there is comparatively free access of air thereto, while having none of the heating elfect characterizing pillows of the ordinary construction. Moreover, the tension of this band may be readily adjusted by proper manipulation of the turn buckles 6, and when desired the band 7 may be conveniently removed by disengaging one set of the hooks 9 from the eyelets in the adj acent end of said band. On the other hand, a cover may readily be placed so as to surround the band 7 it being noted that when the top run of said band is depressed by the head of the user, the rollers 5 turn slightly on their supporting pivots or spindles l, as the springs 8 are stretched. If desired, there may be additional turn-buckles 10 included as part of the upturned ends 2 of the bars 1*, so that the angle of the head supporting band to the horizontal, may be varied as required, it being obvious that in some cases the range of adjustment provided by these turn-buckles may be made suiiicient to permit of the use of the pillow as a back rest or support. In order to allow of such adjustment, the'upturned ends 3 of the member 1 are connected to the body of said member by hinged joints 12, while the connection between the spindles 4E and the turn buckles is such as to obviously permit of said adjustment.

I claim 1. The combination in a pillow ofa supporting frame consisting of a base portion having hinged to it upwardly extending members arranged in pairs; rollers supported by opposite sets of said members; a head supportingband mounted on the rollers springs for maintaining said band under length of one member of each pair of upwardly extending members, consisting of two threaded pieces and a connecting tube adjustably threaded on said pieces.
