RAILWAY-CAB TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May .28, 12914.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, HARRY E. Donne, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway-Car Trucks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app'ertains to make and use the same.
-This invention relates to railway car trucks, and has for its main object to provide a freight car truck in which the journalboxes are snugly held in operative position in the side frames, and which can be readily and easily removed therefrom or inserted therein. I
Another object is to provide a freight car truck having cast metal side frames that cooperate with standard Master Car Builders journal-boxes in such a manner as to hold the box firmly in operative position therein without the use ofthe usual through-bolts on each side of said box.
Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure l of the drawin s is a side elevational View of a portion of a car truck constructed. in'aocordance with my invention, thejournal-box being shown in vertical section; Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. i is a side elevational view illustrating a slight modification of my invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates the'cast metal side frame of a car truck, and B designates a standard Master Oar Builders journal-box that cooiperates with said frame. Means is provided for removably securing said jourrial-box in operative position in the side frame, and in the embodiment of my invention heroin shown said means comprises an L-shaped member or strap G that engages the bottom and one side wall of the journalbox and is removably secured to the frame A by means of suitable fastening devices 1 that pass through the bifurcated ends of said strap and through integral ears 2 on said frame. The side frame A is provided with integral portions that engage the top and opposite side wall of the journal-box and cooperate with the strap C to securely hold the box in operative position and prevent any movement thereof in a vertical or horizontal direction with respect to said frame. The means that I prefer to use to prevent transverse movement of the journah box with respect to the frame consists of vertically disposed ribs 3 formed on the portions of the frame Aand the strap C that engage the side wall of the journal-box, and which lie in the usual vertically disposed grooves 4 in the side walls of the journalbox, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. In order to prevent any tendency of the b( to rock when in position in the frame I provide an abutment 5 on the frame A and a similar abutment 6 on the strap B that engage the usual lugs 7 on the upper side walls of the journal-box. In the preferred form of my invention the strap G is held in position by means of the fastening devices 1 at each end thereof whereby the strap may be swung in the direction indicated by the arrows when the lowermost fastening device is removed so as to permit of the removal or insertion of a journal-box or it may be detached from the frame by removing the other fastening device.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a slight modification of my, invention in which I. form an integral*horikontal pin .8 in the bifurcated upper end of the strap C that coiiperates with a hook-shaped portion 9 formed in-- tegral with the side frame A. By constructing the truck in this manner I am enabled to detach the strap C from the frame A by simply removing the single fastening device and swinging the strap about the pin 821s a pivot until it can be lifted bodily out of the hooked portionfl.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a truck in which a standard- Master Car-Builders journal-box is normally held in snug engagement witha cast metal side frame in such a manner asto pre vent any tendency of said box to rock or to move in any direction out of its normal position with respect to said frame.
A truck of the character herein described is composed of few, simple parts that cannot not out of order easily and can be produccd at a low cost of manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let tors Patent is:
1. In a car truck, a journal-box providc with the usual continuous yertieal grooves the side Walls thereof, laterally extending ugs at the upper and lower ends of said grooves, a side frame, and means cooperating with the portion of said grooves intermediate said lugs only for preventing transverse movement of said box With respect to said frame.
In a car truck, a. jQdIIlal-bOX provided with vertical grooves 1n the side Walls there? of, laterally extending lugs on said box adjacent the upper and lower endsef said grooves, a side frame provided with an integral portion that co iperates with the groove formed in one side Wall of said journal-box intermediate the lugs on that side, and a member detachably connected to said side frame and provided with a portion that cooperates with the intermediate portion only of the groove in the opposite side Wall of said box.
3. In a car truck, a standard Master Car Builders journal-box, a cast metal side frame provided with integral portions that engage the top and central portion only of one side Wall of the journal-box, and a member detachably connected to said side frame that engages the bottom and the central porgion only of the opposite side Wall of said 4:. In a car truck, a journal-box provided with laterally extending lugs adjacent the upper and lower edges of the side Walls thereof, a cast metal side frame provided with means for engaging the side Walls of said journal-box intermediate said lugs, and
side wall of said box, a strap that engages the bottom ofsaid box and the opposite side wall intermediate said lugs, and means for securing said strap to said side frame.
6. In a car truck, a cast metal side frame having integral portions that form the top and one side of a substantially rectangular opening to receive the journal-box, a memher that forms the opposite side and bottom of said opening, and means comprising a hook-shaped portion on said frame and a cooperating pin on said member whereby said member is removably secured to said frame.
7 In a car truck, a journal-box provided with vertically disposed grooves in the side walls thereof, laterally projecting lugs adjacent the upper and lower edges of said side walls, and I cast metal side frame provided with ribs that eoiiperate with said grooves intermediate said lugs so as to hold said box in operative position in said frame.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses, this 21st day of October 1913.
