To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOI-IN C. LAUTH, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Antisiphon- Traps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to antisiphon traps, and an object of the same is to' provide ak construction which will permit the use of a concealed partition between the inlet and the outlet of the trap while at the same time notifying the user of the trap that such partition has become perforated, the construction being such that the perforation is sealed to prevent the escape of sewer g To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinat-ions of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a trap embodying the present improvements: Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the trap; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the trap.
According to this invention, there is provided a depending` partition between the inlet pipe and the outlet pipe, so formed that, in the event the walls thereof become perforated or eaten away, water from the seal will flow to the exterior thereof into a chamber or space which, while visible to the user, notifying him of trouble, also seals the opening insuch a manner that sewer gas cannot escape from the trap.
In the embodiment herein illustrated, there is provided a body l which, in this instance, is of cylindrical formation having a clean-out plug 2 at its lower end, but, of course, the shape of this body is immaterial. The outlet pipe 3 preferably connects with the body by a bend such as a return or elbow bend 4 whose inner end is secured to the eXtreme top of the body by means of a screw rcollar 5 engaging an rip-standing nipple 6 on the body, the latter being bulged at 7 in proximity to the nipple in order to provide an outlet of proper size.
Depending within the body is a partition which separates the outlet and the inlet, its lower end serving to form the sealing lip or point of the trap. rl`his partition may be circular in cross section and comprises an outer wall 8 and an inner wall 9 spaced apart to provide a chamber between them, the outer wall being` joined to the top wall of the body l and also being joined to the bottom or lower end of the inner wall 9, the chamber thus formed opening at the top of the body. lThe inletl pipe l0 may be formed 1n one piece with or otherwise connected to the inner wall 9 so as to serve as a continuation thereof.
A sewerrtrap constructed in accordance with this invention is simple in construction and may be connected to the sewer pipes by the usual roughing-in method. llChe hollow partition, depending into the trap body and opening at the top of the latter, permits all of the walls of the partition to open to the exterior of the trap so that, in the event of a leak in the partition, water will collect in the upwardly-opening chamber and notify the user of the defect, while at the same time this water'will act to seal or close the opening and prevent the escape of sewer gas therethrough, this being due to the fact that all portions of the hollow partition are below the return bend of the outlet pipe. The connection between the outlet pipe and the body is such that, the said pipe may be turned to assume various positions with relation to the trap body.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An anti-Siphon trap comprising' a body having an inlet and an outlet and provided with a hollow partition depending therein and opening at the top of the trap to provide a chamber for the collection of a body of water to seal the trap in the event of a leak in the partition, the partition being so located that the water must flow about the lower end thereof to reach the outlet and the outlet being above the upper end of the opening of the hollow partition so that a body of water will be maintained in the trap up to the top of the partition.
2. A sewer trap comprising a body having a cylindrical hollow partition depending therein, an inlet pipe connected to the inner wall of said hollow partition and an outlet pipe connected to the top of the body to one side of the hollow partition, said outlet pipe having a bend above the body so that a body of water will be maintained within the trap up to the top of the partition.
3. A sewer trap comprising a body having an inlet and an outlet, and a cylindrical holloW partition depending therein, the outer top of the hollow partition, so that a body Wall of which is joined at its upper end to of Water will be maintained in the trap up the top of the body and the inner Wall of to the top of the partition.
