CARPET-SWEEPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1914.
Application filed September G, 1913 Serial No. 788,379.
To all whom t may concer/t.'
Be it known that 1, JOHN lV. Yocrmir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tinin, in the county of Seneca and State of hie, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Sweepers, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to sweepers, and more especially to earpet-sweepers, and it has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, which comprises a member which may be inserted into the casing of the sweeper to collect or concentrate such loose particles of dust as may be stirred up by the brush of the machine, so that the diffusion of such dust into the atmosphere will be obviated.
The invention has, furthermore, for its object the provision of a member of this class which may be readily attached to and removed from the casing, so that it may be cleaned or renewed without difficulty.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and be particularly defined in the claims.
The invention has been clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar characters denote similar parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of a carpet-sweeper equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates modification.
Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes the casing of the sweeper which may be of any well-known or preferred construction and comprises in the present instance side walls 11, a top 12, and end walls 13. Floor wheels 14C are provided as usual to operate the brush 15, whereby the dirt is deposited in trays 1G, all the parts being substantially of wellknown form.
Disposed within the casing is my im` scribed, it will practically retain all of the dust which may then be cleaned therefrom when required.
ln F ig. 2 my improved dust collector consists of a single piece of wire netting covered with textile fabric, as above, and extending from one side 11 of the casing to the other, in the form of a dome, the upper portion of which carries a screw or like device 19 extending through a suitable perforation in the cover 12 and provided at the outside thereof with a thumb nut 20. inasmuch as the length of the member 17 is greater than the distance between the sides 11, the member 17 will lie or may be sprung with its lower marginal edges 17 against the inner surface of the side walls 11. Likewise it will be noted that when the thumb nut 2O is removed, and either tray 16 is opened, the member 17 may be readily withdrawn from the casing.
In Fig. 3. the top 12 is provided with a pair of longitudinal slots 21 into which dust collecting members 22 may be inserted from the top, into the position shown, and held by virtue of plates 23 extending longitudinally of said members 22 and engaged by resilient retaining clips 2-/1 which permit the ready insertion and removal of the members 22. As before described, these members 22 are also preferably formed of wire netting and covered, especially at their adjacent sides, with textile fabric coated or saturated with mineral oil.
Many changes may be made in the general organization, as well as in the particular construction of the dust retainer without departing from the spirit of the invention, especially in the main supporting member, and in the means whereby the entire device is held in place on the casing of the machine.
I claim:
1. The combination with a sweeper comprising a easing, dustpans therein, and a sweeping device movable therein, 0f dust collecting means extending downwardly from the top of the casing on both sides of the sweeping device and formed of fabric impregnated with mineral oil.
2. The combination with a sweeper comprising a casing, and a sweeper device movable therein, of a resilient arched dust col- In testimony whereof I aiix my signature lector comprising fabric impregnated with in presence of two Witnesses. mineral oil, the ends of said arch resting closely against the inner faces of said cas- JOHN W' YOCHEM' ing on opposite sides of said device, and Witnesses:
