WILLIAM in. sto-Ann, or anw YORK,
` Letters PatentNo. 109,775,...- dated November 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT INl PURIFVING AND. REFINING OILS.
. l The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and in aldng part of 'the same.
, to show the interior thereof'.
v'Ihe apparatus consists essentially of steam-boiler i A of small capacity, a closed cylinder, B, for receiving'the-oil, provided wvitlran agitator, C, a condenser, D, and a close filtering vessel, E, the oil cylinder and condenser and filter being connected with the steamgenerator, and with one another by as vstem of' pipes and cocks,`as hereafter described.
The crude oil is placed inthe close 'cylinder B, and with 'it milk of li'me,of the consistencyofcreamin the proportion of one part, or v theieabout, to ten parts ot' the oil.
rIhe cylinder is then closed steam-tight and steam is admitted into the bottom of vthe oil-cylinder through 4the pipe f by opening the cock therein.
The agitating-shai't G is then made to revolve rapidly by power applied tol'thc pulley y, and the steami ing and agitation continued until the pressurein the v oil-vessel indicates eighty to one 'hundred' pounds. The agitation is then discontinued to allow the lime t0 deposit and the steam to condense, when they are drawn or blown off through a pipe in the bottom-into a receiving-tank, when any ot' the heavier portions of the oil which may have escaped wit-h it can be saved by due separation. Having closed the pipe through which these deposits are drawn ott', I open the cock in.
the pipe 71., leading t'o the condenser. I blow oil` the steam and vapor of oil through the condensing coil into a receiving-tank, where the water can be drawn oil from the bottom, leaving the rcned oilV ready for the in arket.
I continue the blowing oft of the vapor through the pipe 7i, increasing the pressure as the gravity of the oil increases, until what remains in the cylinder B is suiciently heavy for lubricatingr purposes, when I shut the cock in pipe 71 and open. that in the bottom' of the cylinder, and blow olf' the remaining heavy oil into -a suitable receiving-tank.
This heavy oil is entirely inodorous, and more vainable than the volatile portion, being applicable for,1n lieating, leather dressing, and for preparing wool,
This method develops no tar or piteh anrl but a small quantity of earthy-...matten demonstrating that the pitch produced by the ordinary method or rening, results from partially destructive distillation, a'- part of the oil being converted by heat into 'fixed gas and solid residuum.,
Neither. does my method produce asA much bcnzole or othervolatile tlnid asv the old method for the same reason.'
In refining those kinds of. oils in which -tilteration is necessary or desirable,'-I.employ the closed Iilter E in combination with the cylinder and steam-boiler, using st-camvpressureto lexpedite the operation and render it more effect-ive.
The filtering vessel lll is provided with a perforated false bottom, i, `upon which may be placed any suitable porous matcrialj.
A pipe, 7.', connects the vbottom oi' the'oilfcylilndcr B with the upper part of the ilteringchamber, by which thc contents'offthe formerare blown by the steam pressure em'ployerhinto the latter. Ihe coc-k i-n L is then closed, and steam from the boiler is ad mitted directly into the upper part of the filter by means of the pipe I, and acts bt'h bymaintaining the temperature of the oil at a .point of great fluidity, and by direct pressure upon the surface of the oil, to
' produce its rapid passage through theliltering mdium.
The pressure may be varied and regulated at will. Any other dcodorizing agent may be used instead of lime in the process 'of agitating Aunder the action of steam.
The pipe m dinnecfsavlth the rfatcr portion oi theboiler for the purpose of injecting water into the top of the filter to expel the oil held in the pores of the filtering material, and-for cleansing the'same, steam prcssure'being applied above the water by opening the coclrl..
I claim as my invention- 1. lhe method ofpuriiying oils by agitating with any deodorizing agent in a close vessel under theacn tion and pressure ot steam, substantially as set forth. 2. rIhe comhination'oi' the closed tiltcr with the' agitating vessel and steamboilcr, for the purpose Set forth.`
3. 'Ihp combination of. the condenser I) with the agitating vessel IS andsteam-gcnerator, as and for the purposes set forth. f"
4. An oil-refining apparatus, consisting of the agitaing-vcssel B, condenser' D, filter E, steam-boiler .ff and pipes fh 7:1, combine:l and arranged substantially as and for the purposesfset forth.
o; The method of refining and purifying .oils ily means of agitating, Jvaporizing, and filtering'umlcr, thc heat and pressure of steam, as set forth.
