STONEWALL TOMIKINS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DIRECTORY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12,1914.
Application filed August 13, 1913. Serial No. 784,578.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, STONEWALL TOMPKINS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Directories, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a directory and particularly to that class of directories most commonly used in large buildings to displa the names of the occupants of the bui ding.
One object of my invention is to construct a directory of permanently fixed and removable parts and one in which the removable parts may be attached to the permanently fixed parts in an easy and efficient manner.
Another object of my invention is to con struct the removable parts of cheap but durable materials.
My invention can be more readily understood upon reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the directory with the removable parts applied, embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the removable name slip; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the parallel holding strip showing the resilient tongue pieces for holding the strip in the frame; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification of one of the holding strips; Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 6-6, Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on the line 77, Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a rectangular frame having top, side and bottom members 1, 3, 3, respectively, the said side members each comprising front and rear confining walls constructed to receive and retain therebetween the ends of the holding strips and name slips. The rear confining wall is wider than the front confining wall, thereby giving an increased bearing surface for the ends of the holding strips.
The name slip 5 may be made of any suitable fiexible material folded on parallel longitudinal lines, having a display face 5 and two longitudinal flanges 11 perpendicular to said display face. WVith this construction, the face of the name slip is adapted to overlie the face of the holding strip and its perpendicular flanges 11 are adapted to lie Hat on the sides of the holding strip 12 and be held thereon by the next adjacent holding strips.
6 designates a slot cut in the ends of the holding strips in such a manner that it will form resilient tongues 7 and 8, one of which is of greater thickness than the other. The resilient tongue members are adapted to be pinched between the front and rear confining walls of the side members of the frame; therefore, when the name slip is applied to the holding strip and placed in position in the frame, the resilient tongue members will hold the name slip in any desired vertical position by frictional contact.
The perpendicular flanges 11 of the name slips stiffen the strip, thereby maintaining the display face 5 flat.
9 designates flexible tongues which are attached to the body portion 10 of the metallic holding strips which may be used with the same efficiency as the tongues shown in the other embodiment.
I claim:
1. A directory comprising side members, each embodying a pair of opposed confining walls, a series of parallel holding strips having resilient ends compressed between the walls of said side members and removable name slips overlying the respective holding strips, with their ends projecting between the strips and a wall of each side member, and clamped by said strips against the said walls of the side members.
2. A directory comprising side members, each embodying a pair of opposed confining walls, a series of parallel holding strips having resilient ends compressed between the walls of said members and removable name slips having exposure faces overlying the .outer faces of the said strips and with confining flanges entering between the opposed faces of said strips.
3. A directory comprising side members with front and rear confining walls, a series of parallel holding strips having their ends confined between the side member walls and with their opposed longitudinal faces adapted to abut, and name slips having exposure faces overlying the outer faces of the strips and with confining flanges entering between the opposed faces of said strips, the confined ends of said strips being resilient and being compressed between said confining walls, to hold the strips against displacement.
4. A directory comprising side members with front and rear confining walls, a series of parallel holding strips having their opposed longitudinal faces adapted to abut,
and name slips having exposure faces over lying the outer faces of the strips and with confining flanges entering between the opposed faces of said strips, the confined ends of said strips being resilient and belng compressed between said confining walls, to hold the strips against displacement, said name slips also projecting between the holding strips and the front walls of the sideniembers and clamped there by the resilient ends of the holding strips.
15. A directory name device comprising a holding strip, adapted to be supported in display position and a changeable nameapplying device therefor comprising a piece of Copies of this patent-maybe obtained for :five'cents each, by addressing the Gommissionertof Patents,
Washington, =1). 0.
