Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Application filed December 18, 1912, Serial No. 737,516. Renewed December 13, 1913. Serial No. 806,608.
This invention relates to improvements in troughs, and more particularly to that class of troughs which are used in feeding hogs or other animals.
An object of this invention is the provision of a trough which is formed of one sheet of metal, whereby the device may be cheaply manufactured.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a trough comprising a sheet of galvanized iron or other metal, the metal being curved to form a channel and the plate being curved inwardly at its ends to form integral end walls for the channel.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a trough comprising a sheet of metal, the metal being bent to form a channel, the channel having vertical side walls, each of the walls being formed with an inwardly extending longitudinal flange for supporting the. trough.
WVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved trough which comprises a. plate or sheet of metal 2 which is curved transversely as at 3 to form a longitudinally extending channel or trough. The plate is formed with vertical side walls 4, the walls being formed on their lower longitudinal edges with inwardly extending flanges 5, whereby the device may be suitably supported upon the ground. The opposite ends of the plate between the side walls are bent upwardly and curved inwardly as at 6 to form integral end walls for the trough. To prevent lateral movement of the side walls l of the trough, I provide U shaped brace bars 7, the opposite ends of the arms being secured to the opposite walls of the trough by rivets 8, or other suitable fastening devices. Secured to the opposite ends of the trough by rivets 9, or other suitable fastening devices, are brace members 10. the intermediate portions of which are looped as at 11 and extend above the upper edge of the trough, the opposite arms of the brace members being bent to extend around the side walls of the trough and under the base thereof, whereby the ends of the side walls of the trough will be prevented from spreading. The arms of the loops 11 are provided with openings 12 and a brace rod 13 having openings 14 in the opposite ends thereof are disposed within the loops, cotterpins 15 being passed through the openings 12 in the loops and the openings 14: in the rod whereby the rod is secured at its opposite ends in the loops. The brace rod 13 provides suitable means for carrying the trough and also prevents warping of the body thereof.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is apparent that I have provided a trough, the body portion of which is constructed of one sheet or plate of metal, the end walls and side walls of the trough being formed integral with the body portion thereof, so that the device is formed of a minimum number of parts, whereby it may be cheaply manufactured.
A device constructed in accordance with my invention is extremely simple in construction and may be made without the use of rivets or bolts as there are no separable parts of the body portion of the trough to be connected.
It will be understood that if the device is constructed of galvanized or other strong metal, it may be used without the brace bars or the handle, and the device will then consist of only one member.
Having thus described my invention what- I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is;
1. A device of the character described comprising a sheet of metal curved transversely to form a trough, vertical side walls formed integral with said trough, each of said walls being formed with an inwardly extending horizontal flange on its free longitudinal edge, and brace members secured to said side walls at their Opposite ends and entirely surrounding said trough, as and for the purpose described. 7
2. The combination with a trough having vertical side walls, of brace members secured to the opposite ends of said trough, each of said members having its intermediate portion extending above said trough, the opposite ends of said members being secured to the side walls of said trough, the extremities of said members being disposed beneath said trough, and means secured to the intermediate portions of said members whereby said trough may be carried, as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a trough having vertical side Walls, of brace members secured to the opposite ends of said trough,
said members being formed intermediate of their ends with upwardly extending loops arranged above said trough, the opposite ends of said members being secured to the side walls of said trough, the extremities of said members being disposed beneath said trough, a longitudinally extending rod having its opposite ends disposed within said loops, and means whereby said rod may be detachably secured Within said loops, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK B. JACOBSON.
