HINGE FOR DOORS, GATES, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 11, 1909.
Patented May 5, 1914. Serial No. 471,630.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE ERNEST Sorrows, a subject of the King of England, residing at 21 Priory street, Birkenhead, 1n the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Doors, Gates, and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This i1 vention has reference to hinges for doors, gates, and the like, and has -for its object to provide a hinge simple in construction, and also capable of being fitted in situations where T hinges, and band and gudgeon or hook hinges as ordinarily used, cannot be employed.
According to my invention I provide a screw threaded shank suitable for screwing into wood; the end of said shank, which is to form part of the knuckle of the hinge, is preferably provided with a knob or head from which project on opposite sides, pins, or studs. Near that end of the leaf or strap which is intended for the knuckle of the hinge a slot is provided.
In assembling the hinge, the shank is passed through the slot referred to and the end of the leaf is bent over and around the pins or studs, and is then secured, if necessary, by a rivet, or it may be welded, thus forming the whole knuckle, and completion of the hinge.
In fitting the hinge, the shank is screwed into the framing by rotation of the leaf, which afterward is secured to-the door or the like in any convenient manner.
A drawing illustrating this invention is annexed hereto, in which Figures 1 and 2 are views, taken at right angles to each other, of one form of hinge assembled. Figs. 8 and 4 are views, taken at right angles to each other, of a modification. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of leaf; and Fig. 6 shows a shank with pins detached from the strap or leaf.
Referring to the drawing, a is the screw threaded ortion of the shank, and a is its head, rom which head project, on 01)- posite sides, the pins or studs 6. a is the leaf or strap, bent over and around the pins or studs 1) at 0 and provided with a slot (Z, in which the head a of the shank fits loosely. Said pins 6 are movable freely within the sockets 0 formed by the knuckles c of the strap or leaf.
In a modified arrangement, in lieu of the two pins Z), as illustrated, a single pin only may be employed, which pin is driven through an aperture in the head a of the shank, the projecting portions of said pin being encircled by the lmuckles c of leaf or strap 0. Alternatively, the pin Z) (or pins, if two are employed) may be loose in head a and firmly clasped by the knuckles of strap 0. The knuckles c if necessarymay be riveted to leaf 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or welded, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4; or adapted to be secured to leaf 0 by screws passed through holes 6, as shown in Fig. 5. Or, the leaf 0, may be cast with an enlarged end provided with a slot d, and then drilled or bored to receive the pin or pins 6 of the shank.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the shank is shown pro vided with a shoulder a Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A hinge comprising a leaf having at one end thereof a pair of centrally-spaced knuckles, a centrally-disposed screw-threaded shank having a head fitted between the knuckles, and pins integral with and projecting from opposite sides of said head into pivotal and inseparable engagement with said knuckles.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE ERNEST SCHOLES.
