DEAWING PRESS feed for the blank holder ram and the drawing or plunger ram so that the machine may function in a more expeditious and economical manner than has been possible heretofore; to provide a machine entirely automatic in its operation or which may be manually controlled; to provide diiferential gearing for insuring the proper feeding of the blank holder in advance of the plunger or drawing die; to provide clutch mechanism for throwing into and out of operation the gearing for operating the blank holder ram; to provide clutch mechanism for insuring the proper up and down movements of the various reciprocating parts; and to provide a clutch controlling barthat may be automatically or manually operated. lVith these and other objects in view, the nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will more readily be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein- Figure 1, is a sectional elevational view of a drawing press embodying features ofmy invention. Fig. 2, is an end view thereof. Fig. 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, represents details.
The numeral 5, designates a frame of any suitable construction adapted for supporting and carrying the various working parts in proper relation.
The blank holder ram 6, is an externally threaded sleeve-like member carrying a complemental spur gear from which it derives its up and down movement. Slidably mounted within the member 6, is the drawing plunger 7 whlch is operated by a screw spindle 8, carrying an internally geared member 9. The plunger 7 is steadied in its up and down movements by a steadying or guide frame consisting of an upper crosshead 10, which may be integral with the plunger, a lower cross-head 11, and upright Specification of Letters Patent.

members or connecting rods 12, and 13, which are guided in suitable projecting parts 1e, of the press frame.
The driving shaft 15, has pulleys 16, and 17, which at times run idle and at other times are operatively and alternately connected to the shaft by suitable clutch mechanism so as to effect the proper up and down movements of the plunger ram and the blank holder ram, the pulleys of course being driven in opposite directions.
There is an upright shaft 18, which transmits motion from'the main or drive shaft to the respective working parts of the machine. Mounted on it is a clutch member 19, which is loose on the shaft and is caused to rotate with the fixed member 20, when its complemental member 21, is advanced by shifting an armed lever 22. A pinion 23, carried by or formed integral with the clutch transmits motion to the blank holder ram. A stub shaft 25, suitably journaled in a bracket bearing 26, carries gears 27 and 28, the former meshing with a gear 29, on shaft 18, and the latter serving to transmit motion to the internally geared member 9, through companion gears 30 and 31. The stub shaft is useful in that by it the gears may be relatively disposed so as to change the speed of gear 9, and hence regulate the speed of the plunger according to the character of the work. 111 all cases, however, the arrangement issuch that the blank holder is advanced to its position ahead of the drawing die carrying plunger. 7
The upright shaft 18, is provided at ts lower end with a bevel gear 32, which meshes with a smaller bevel gear 33, on the drive shaft. There is a cross bar 34, carried by the press frame in a plane parallel with the drive-shaft, and means are provided for shifting said cross bar for locking and releasing the clutches 35 and 36, which are complements, respectively, of pulleys 16 and '17, so as to effect a forward or reverse move- 4:. A collar 39, secured to the member 34, is connected by a toggle lever -10, to a rock shaft l1, which may be automatically oper ated or which may be connected by a toggle lever 42, to another rock shaft 43, equipped with a manually operated starting lever 4st.
If it is desired to operate the clutch-coutrolling member automatically, this may be accomplished, for example, by providing the rock-shaft 41, with a dog 45, located in the path of stops l6 and 47, on the connecting rod 13, of the steadying or guide frame.
The lower cross-head ll, of the guide frame may be provided with a screw spindle l8, served at its top with a disk or collar 19, which may be elevated by means of a hand wheel 50, and the function of which, when present, is to eject the shells or assist in the removal of the lower die.
For illustrative purposes, a plunger die 51, and a lower or female die 52, are shown, as is also a blank holder 53. The design of these, however, will obviously vary according to the character of work.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Hence the same is not limited other than required by the state of the prior art.
Having described the nature and objects of the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. In a drawing press, a plunger die, a screw feed for operating it, a telescopic blank holder, and a clutch-controlled screw feed for operating it.
2. In a drawing press, the combination of a lower die, a plunger die having a screw feed and a differential for operating it, a blank holder, and clutch-controlled means for insuring a downward feed of the blank holder in advance of the plunger die.
3. In a drawing press, the combination of a lower die, a plunger die, a screw feed for operating it, a telescopic blank holder, a clutch-controlled screw feed for operating it, a drive shaft, and means connected with it for effecting downward and reverse movements of the blank holder and plunger die.
4. In a drawing press, the combination of a lower die, a plunger die, a screw feed for operating it, a telescopic blank holder, a clutch-controlled screw feed for operating it, a drive shaft, and means connected with it for effecting downward and reverse movements of the blank holder and plunger die, said means including a differential for operating the feed of the plunger die.
5. In a drawing press, the combination of a lower die, a plunger die, a screw feed for operating it, a telescopic blank holder, a
clutch-controlled screw feed for operating it,
a clutch-controlled driveshaft, a controller for the clutch on the drive shaft, and a steadying or guide frame for the plunger die provided with means for actuating said con troller.
6. In a drawing press, the combination of a lower die, a plunger die, a screw feed for operating it, a telescopic blank holder, a clutch-controlled screw feed for operating it, a clutch-controlled drive shaft, and a stripper connected with the plunger die and adapted and arranged to actuate the clutch on the drive shaft.
