Specification of I Application filed December 1 Letters Patent. Patented. Apr. 28, 1914. 1, 1912. Serial No. 736,182.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADELBERT L. A. Doncn, a citizen of the United States, resid-' ing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packages intended to contain rolls of webbing, ribbons, paper, and other flexible strips and has for its essential objects the prevention of the breaking down of the peripheral portion of the roll as is the case in such structures as are inpresent use; to facilitate the delivery of the ribbon from the roll and from the package; to provide a facile means of enabling the operator to measure that portion of the ribbon which is withdrawn from the package; and to provide means for enabling the roll to be rotated in a reverse direction to rewind the portion of the strip which has been previously delivered from the package.
To the above ends my invention consists in such parts and such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings which is a perspective view of the partially comnear the bottom wall E of the box, and this opening permits the passage therethrough of the material upon the roll. The walls B and C are provided with centrally oppo sitely disposed openings 1 and respectively through which passes the pivot member G which in this instance is tubular and has its ends 9 and g riveted over to form retaining flanges overlapping the walls through which the pivot member passes. One or both of the walls B and C are provided near their margins with arcuate openings H and 1-1 respectively, the radii of which slots converge upon the pivot member G. Mounted upon the member C is the roll I comprising the core 11 and thehit'ound flexible strip i of webbing, ribbon or other material intended to be housed.
In operating my package the end J of the material i is pulled through the opening 0 approximately the desiredlength to be measured, and the measuring strip is placed upon the portion of the strip exterior of the package with its end abutting against the wall 0 of the package, thus facilitating'the measurement of the exposed strip. After the strip has been measured and the desired length severed therefrom the strip is withdrawn upon its roll by reversing the direction of the rotation ofthe roll manupleted box or package embodying my invention, Figs. 2 and 3, front and side elevations respectively of the complete package, Figs. 4; and 5, sections on lines w m and 3 fl/ respectively of Figs. 2 and 3, Fig. 6-, an en larged sectional view of the pivot member, Fig. 7, a like section of the modified form of pivot member, and Fig. 8, a perspective view of a modified form of package.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
My package is of general rectangular shape and may be constructed in any usual convenient manner. In the present instance the package A comprises front and back walls B and. C and top and bottom walls D and E.
Referring to Fig. 1 the walls D and E have upon their ends flaps d and 6 respectively adapted to be inwardly turned; while the wall C is provided with end extension.
0 form end walls of the package. One of the end walls a is shorter than the other end ally. This is done by grasping the side of the roll I by the thumb and a finger through the slots H and H and, rotating the roll relatively to the package, which is. permitted by its pivotal relation therewith. It will be observed that the front and rear walls B and Care by virtue of the ivot member G and the construction 0 the package maintained in close contact with the front and rear face of the roll I at all po'nts whereby all "danger of the lateral breaking or displacement of the layers of the roll is obviated. q
- It will be understood that the construction of the pivot member G may be varied without departing invention, and that if preferred a pivot member may be employed such as shown in Fig. 7 consisting of a fastener ing abifurcated shank portion 9? provided with an enlarged head 9 and with outwardly bent ends or fingers g. The head and fingers overlapping respectively. the
walls'B and O.
My package may be of circular form as wall so as to leave a rectangular opening shown'in Fig. 8 wherein the body A is cirfrom the spirit ofthe compristo leave an opening for the passage of the material from said roll, and a pivot for said roll held in said back and front walls, the
said front and back Walls being provided With oppositely-disposed arcuate openings to permit of the grasping of the roll to rotate the same, the said pivot having retain- 111 th r ough which said pivot passes to hold said Walls in close contact With the rear and front faces of the roll.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
- ADELBERT L. A. DODGE.
