. the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a -side elevation of a journal box and of a portion of a truck side frame embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is asection on the broken lines 11-11 of Fig. 1, showing the side frame in section with the journal box in plan; Fig. 3 shows in side elevation the application of my invention to a journal box of the. Master Car Builders type; Fig. 4: is an end elevation of the construction hown in Fig, 3; and Fig. 5 is a bottom view thereof.
My invention relates to the securing of journal boxes to truck side frames and is an improvement on the type of construction shown in my Patent 1,023,805 dated April My improvement consists in providing a structure adapted for use with either the journal box of the type shown in my patent aforesaid, .or with a journal box of the Master (Jar Builders type, so that journal boxes of these types may be freely interchanged.
Referring to the drawings,; I have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a journal box A, of the type shown in my patentafores'aid, secured to a portion of a side frame 2 of a car truck. The side frame 2 has at its end;an overhung extension 3 to receive and rest on the journal box A. The lower face 4 of this project-ion is preferably horizontal to fit the top of the box, and the end of the side frame has a vertical bearing face 5 substantially at right angles to the face 4, the box fitting in the angle between the two faces 4 and 5. Twisting and endwise movement of the box is prevented by the flanges 6, 6 which bear respectively against the outer sides of the ribs 7 on the face 5 and the lugs 8 extending downwardly from the extension 3. The box A is secured to the frame by the curved strap bolt 9, the head of which fits into the recess 10 on the frame, and the threaded end into an aperture 11 in the extension 3, and is secured therein by the holding nut 12, which bears against the upper surface of the extension 3. The box A has a groove 13 in which bolt 9 fits and a hook 14, which acts as a retainer for the bolt 9.
In Figs. 3, 4 and 5, I have shown a journalbox B of the Master Car Builders type. which is interchangeable with the type of box shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The box B is secured to the side frame by the bolts 15 and 16 and by the shim 17 and plate 18.
The bolts 15 and 16 fit in apertures 11 and 19 in the extension 3. The bolt 16 is preferably countersunk in the extension, so that the bolts 15 and 16 may be of the same length. The shim 17 has a bearing on the bottom of the box B. The plate 18, which underlies the shim 17, has a hooked portion 21 cooperating with a recess 22 in the frame.
Both the shim 17 and the plate 18 are aper-- turedv for'the bolts 15 and 1G and are held" against the bottom of the box B by the retaining nuts 23 and 24. At the sides of the box B and at its top and bottom are the usual V- shaped projections 25, 25, and webs 26, 26 connect the projections 25, 25 respectively. The projections 25 fit in be- .tween the ribs 7 and against the vertical face 5, and the webs 26 also provide bearings against the inner faces of the ribs 7, while the upper projection 25 fits in between the depending lugs 8 of the extension 3, thus holding the box againsttwisting or endwise movement.
It will be seen that with my improved construction the ribs 7 and lugs 8 prevent boxes of either type from twisting or from endwise movement, since with the type of box shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the flanges 6, 6 grip the outer side faces of the, ribs and lugs whileiwith the type of box shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 the projections 25, 25' and webs 26 bear against the inner side faces of the ribs and lugs.
My invention is of great advantage since, if a car is equipped with journalboxes of the type shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and one of the boxes breaks, it can be replaced without delay by an M. C. B. box.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the constructionwhich I have shown and described herein without departing from my invention, g
It is to'be understood that with the M. C. B. box the plate 18 may be secured to the frame by any suitable means such as bolts,
in which case the plate may be made without the hooked portion 21. It is also to be understood that the shim 17 may be inserted between the box and the extension 3 instead of between the box and the plate 18 in case it is desired to raise the frame and the car higher when either the bolster springs or the frame have taken a permanent set.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A truckside frame having two bearing surfaces at an angle to each other, one of said bearing surfaces having upstanding ribs adapted to receive between them V-shaped projections on a journal box of the Master Oar Builders type, the said ribs being adapted to enter between flanges upon a journal box of another type, seats for bolts to secure a box of the Master Car Builders type, and an additional seat cooperating with one of the first-named seats to receive between them a strap to secure a journal box of a different type.
2. In journal box securing mechanism, a truck side frame havin a journal box seat, a bolt hole arranged or securing in said seat journal boxes having differently dimensioned bearings for the journal box seat, and a second bolt hole arranged to assist in se curing in said seat a-journal box of the Master Car Builders type.
3. A truck side frame having two bearing faces at an angle to each other a journal box seated on said faces, and a strap arranged to draw and hold the box against said faces, one of said faces having ribs adapted to receive therebetween V-shaped project-ions on the side of a. box of the Master Oar Build- I ers type.

5. In a journal box securing mechanism,
a truck side frame having a journal box seat, said seat being adapted to secure therein a journal box having a wider seating surface than that of the Master Car Builders type, said seatbeing arranged to receive therein the narrower bearing of a journal box of the Master Car Builders type, and apertures for receiving bolts to secure either of said boxes to the frame.
' 6. In a journal box securing mechanism, a truck side frame having a journal box seat, a journal box having projections on both of its sides, vertically disposed ribs onsaid seat cooperating with the said projections on both'sides of the box toprevent twisting and endwise movement of the box, and boltin means for holding the said box in its position in said seat.
7. In journal box securing mechanism, a side frame having a journal box seat, a journal box, and means for supporting the journal box comprising a plate having at one end a hooked portion cooperating with a recess in the frame and bolting members securing together the other end of the plate, the journal box and the side frame.
8. A truck side frame having two bearin surfaces at an angle to each other, and adapted to receive a journal box of the Master Car Builders type, or a box of a different type, one of said seats having upstanding ribs adapted to take about V-shapcd projections on a side of the Master Car Builders box, said ribs being adapted to lie between flanges upon a box of a different type, means for restraining either type of box from twisting and endwise movement, and means, comprising bolts, for securing either type of box to the frame.
