TRIANGLE-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1d, 1914.
Application filed January 19, 1914. Serial No. 812,870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Omvmn Gorn'rrn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Triangle-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in containers for pool or billiard balls as held within the usual triangle upon the surface of the table on which the game is played.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby balls so displayed are maintained in position, against unauthorized use, and protected against dust, damage and from soiling by handling. This object is attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the triangle box, looking from the rear. Fig. 2 is a view of a triangle with balls disposed therein. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one side element, looking from the rear. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the other side element. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the container box complete. Fig. 6- is a side View of the same. Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of the box. Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 7, and, Fig. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary section showing the releasing mechanism.
The invention comprises two triangularly shaped members 10 hinged adjacently at their bases 11 as at 13, so that the perpendiculars 12 of the triangles will fold together forming an equilateral triangle. These members having interengaging edge portions 14 and being hollow when folded together form an open, dust proof box or receptacle having upper and lower side walls, the latter of which are adapted, by reason of their beveled edges 15, to slip readily beneath the triangle 30 preferably made with rounded edges, and the balls contained therein as placed on the surface of the tables, while the upper portion and inclosing walls prevent access thereto.
In one of the side elements is a plate 17 pivoted at one end 23 and pressed outwardly by a fiat spring 18 so as to agree with the otherwise level surface. Connected to this plate is a rod l9 extending trans versely at the top of the section to a point near the front end or apex where it engages with a spring detent 20 in such manner that when pressure is communicated to the rod, the detent is depressed.
The outer end of the detent 20 is formed in the manner of a snap catch 21 adapted to engage with a corresponding hook 22 secured rigidly to the inner side of the cover of the opposite member. This arrangement serves to lock the two portions rigidly together and in such manner as to battle the uninitiated as to the method of opening.
In operation the balls are placed in the triangle 30 on the surface of the table in the usual manner, the receptacle being disposed at the rear with the side elements spread apart, then by proper manipulation, the side elements 10 are closed, engaging the balls and triangle therein until the catch 21 is snapped into the hook 22 whereupon it becomes engaged, preventing access to the triangle until pressure has been properly applied to the plate 17 whereupon the side elements may be separated, the receptacle moved and the balls used in the common manner. Thus I have provided a dust proof box, easily operated and self locking which efiectually prevents practising with the balls without authorization and presents a neat appearance upon the table.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of two hollow elements each formed in the shape of a right angle triangle, connections hinged to the bases thereof, spring engaging means on said elements and means for operating the said engaging means. J
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a triangular element having a joint therein extending from the apex to the center of its base, a plate pivoted in the base of one of said elements, a rod connecting therewith, cooperative engaging elements within said triangular casing, and means combined with said rod for disengaging said elements.
3. In a device of the class described, the
