Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1 1, 1914..
Application filed July 21, 1913. Serial No. 780,248.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NEWTON H. BURNS, citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to currycombs and more particularly to devices of this character which carry a cleaning element for removing hair or other matter from the teeth of the comb.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a currycomb having spring pressed comb-bars and a cleaning plate so arranged as to automatically clean the teeth of the comb upon retraction of the comb-bars through said plate.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character having hand grips so secured thereto as to project the comb-bars through the cleaning plate into operative position and permit the retraction thereof upon compression or release of said hand grips.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a curryoomb having comb-bars and a cleaning plate so arranged as to protect the teeth of the comb when in normal position. And a still further object of my invention is to generally improve the construction and increase the efficiency of devices of the above described character and particularly to so simplify the parts as to make them easy to manufacture.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the comb in normal position, the comb bars being raised; and Fig. 8 is a similar view showing the comb bars projected through the cleaner plate into operative position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 10 designates the body portion of the device or the scraping or combing element and 11 the cleaning element both of which may be formed of sheet metal or other suitable material. The body portion 10 may comprise any desired number of spaced parallel channel bars 12 which are secured in such relation by transversely extending cleats 13 which latter are riveted or otherwise secured, as at 14, to the transversely extending portions 15 of said bars near the ends thereof. The downwardly extending portions 16 of the channel bars 12 may be serrated along their lower edges, as shown at 17 to form comb-bars, 18, or may be left smooth as desired both forms being illustrated. The cleaning element is preferably formed of sheet metal, as stated, and includes a plate 19 having longitudinally directed spaced parallel slots 20 therein adapted to receive the downwardly extending portions 16 of the comb-bars 12. Said plate has also formed thereon an upwardly deflected rim 21 thereby providing a smooth surface upon the outward edges thereof so as not to cause injury to the animal in the operation of the device. The portions 22 of the plate 19 lying between the slots 20 are preferably formed convex in section thereby presenting on the outer face of said plate a series of spaced longitudinally extending scraping ridges 23 intermediate of which are coextensive channels 2 1. By this construction sufficient scraping action may be had with the outer face of the cleaning plate 19 to serve as a cleaner for animals with tender hide or where it is not desired to use the combbars 18, the said channels 24 providing recesses in which dandruff or other matter gathered from the hide of the animal may collect and be carried until removed by the operator. The portions 22 have also formed thereon longitudinally extending cleaning blades 25 the sides of said portions being deflected outwardly near their lower edges, as shown, to lie at an acute angle to the plane of movement of the comb-bars 18 thereby securing a shearing action of said blades and effectually removing any foreign matter therefrom.
Connecting the cleaning plate 19 and the body portion 10 of the device are oppositely disposed pairs of loosely mounted pins 26. The pins are received by apertures 27 formed in the transversely extending portions 15 of the two outermost channel bars 12 near their ends and also pass through op.-
positely disposed apertures 28 in the clean 1 ing plate 19. Terminal heads 29 are formed on said pins to hold the same in place.
Interposed between the cleaning plate 19 and the body portion 10 and disposed between the downwardly extending portions 16 of the two outermost channel bars 12 about midway their ends are coil springs 30. Said springs normally hold the body portion 10 in spaced inoperative relation to the cleaning plate 19, the lower edges of the comb-bars 18 lying within said plate. Downwardly extending lugs 31 are formed in the transversely extending portions 15 of the channel bars 12 to hold said spring 30 in operative position. It will be seen that when in normal position the combing edges of the comb-bars 18 are at all times protected by the plate 19 from injury or mutilation such as would tend to decrease the efliciency of the device.
Loosely mounted upon the standards 26 above the body portion 10 and lying parallel to and against the outer edges of the cleats 13 are transversely extending head bars 32 which are bent near their ends to form upwardly projecting pairs of oppositely disposed loops 33.
The loops 33 are designed to have pivotally mounted therein the oppositely disposed and outwardly extending U-shaped hand grips 34. Said hand grips are each preferably formed from a single piece of wire and include a handle portion 35, the ends of the wire being bent inwardly to form oppositely disposed pairs of crank arms 36 disposed at right angles to the plane of said handle portions 35 and terminating in inwardly extending lugs 37 adapted to lie against the upper faces of the cleats 1.3. One of said handle portions 35 is bent intermediate its ends to form an upwardly extending and outwardly turned loop 38 the arms 39 thereof being bent at right angles near the bight portion of said loop to form a laterally extending lip 40. The lip thus provided forming a finger stop is designed to be engaged by the thumb of the operator thereby facilitating the operation of the device.
As will be readily seen, when the device is grasped by the operator, and inward pressure exerted upon the hand grips 34, said grips, pivoting in the loops 33, will cause the extremities 37 of the crank arms 36 to be forced downwardly against the cleats 13, projecting the comb-bars 18 through the slots 20 formed in the cleaning plate 19 to operative position. Upon releasing the handles, the springs 30 will cause the combbars 18 to be retracted through the cleaning plate 19, such operation automatically cleaning said bars of all hair or other foreign matter. I
- It will thus b'eseen that I have provided a currycoinb of the character described which is not only simple in construction and therefore adapted to be cheaply manufactured. butone such as provides for the automatic cleaning of the comb-bars upon actnation of the comb-bars into and out of operative position.
l-"laving thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1, In a device of the character described, a spring pressed combing member, a cleaning plate positioned on one side of said combing member, means connecting said combing member and cleaning plate and hand grips for projecting the combing member through the cleaning plate, one of said hand grips being bent intermediate its ends to form an upwardly extending and outwardly turned loop, the bight portion of said loop lying at right angles to the arms thereof whereby to'form a finger stop. I
2. In a device of the character described, a combing member, a cleaning plate positioned on one side of said combing member and connected thereto, springs interposed between said combing member and cleaning plate, studs formed in said cleaning plate for holding said springs in operative position, and means for projecting the combing member through the cleaning plate.
