Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
JOHN STEPHENS, OF FAIRVIEW, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAIRUS COLLINS, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109,266. dated November 15, 1870.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, Reverend JOHN STE- PHENs,of Fairview, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Operating Window-Ourtains; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part ot' this specification. p The object of this invention is to provide suitable means for lowering and raising the upper ends of Window-curtains without referenceto or disturbing the lower end; and it consists in an upper roller, to which the curtain is attached, which is operated on vertical cords, and held in position by a weighted tassel and band or cord, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of the window, taken on the line a: fr, showing the curtain in another position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the window-casing. B is the curtainroller. O is the curtain, the Lipper end of which is made fast to the roller. Dis a band or cord, one end of which is attached to the roller, so that it winds up around the roller on the face of the curtain. The other end ot' the band or cord is passed through the ring E in the casing. F is a weighted tassel on the end of the cord or band D, which is designed to balance the roll.
It will be seen that when the roll is relieved from the weight of the tassel it will fall by its own gravity, and wind the curtain around it, and that by pulling down on the tassel the roll will be raised and unwind the curtain.
For the purpose of keeping the roller steady and in a horizontal position as it is raised and lowered, its ends are supported by two cords, G G, attached to the side casings of the window, as seen in the drawing.
H H are grooves in the ends of the roller, and the cords G G are passed once around the roller in these grooves, so that as the roller is revolved, and moved up and down in operating and adjusting the curtain, the cords wind on and ofi", thus supporting and keeping the roller in its proper position, without causing any obstruction to the proper working of the curtain. By this arrangement the upper portion of the curtain may be adjusted to any desired position.
A patent was issued to the present applicant and J airus Collins on the 19th of July last for a similar invention; but in that case the curtain is fastened to the casing, and the operating cord or band is differently arranged. The present improvement is designed exclusively for adjusting the top of the curtain.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The central weighted band, D, and supporting-cords GG, combined, as described, with a curtain, C, which is movable up and down from the top, as set forth.
JOHN STEPHENS.
