To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that 1, JAMES H. REINHARDT,
'a citizen of the United States, residing at ltast Grange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Perforating-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to perforating machines, and more particularly to a machine especially adapted for use in simultaneously making a line of perforations or indentations in paper.
The main object of the invention is to provide a machine adapted to indent or perfo'ate a sheet at a number of points simultaneously, the perforating means and the sheet being caused to travel at the same rate of speed during the operative moment of the perforating means so as to prevent a tearing or mutilation of the sheet.
A further object is to provide a machine wherein a sequence of similar perforated lines may be made upon a single sheet under substantially the same conditions.
A still further object is to provide a machine of this character employing a rotary carrier for the sheets which carrier will support the male and the female parts of the perforating mechanism, one of said parts being capable of removal from its operative position relative to the other to an eXtent to afford a clear feeding field for the sheet or strip.
A still further object is to provide a machine wherein each movable part of the perforating means will at the period of the actuation of the perforating punches, be accurately positioned to secure a proper setting thereof relative to said punches or perforators, which parts will be held in this position until after the actuation thereof.
A still further object is to provide a machine wherein the sheet to be perforated will be firmly held against movement relative to the perforators or punches when thus actuated, the movement of the perforators or punches being in a line at right angles to the face of the platen or female die which will have no movement relative to the male die while the perforations or indentations are being made in the sheet, or while the Specification of Letters Patent.

perforators or punches are being withdrawn rectilinearly of the face of the platen or female die and the sheet, a clean cut or impression being thus secured and the mutilation of the paper or such a displacement thereof as would result from any strains along a succeeding perforating or punching mechanism being avoided.
A still further object is to provide a machine of this charatcer employing a plurality or sequence of perforating mechanisms adapted to be spaced apart so as to produce a plurality or sequence of perforations or indentations upon a sheet or strip, said perforating mechanisms being adjustable to permit the machine to be set for use with work requiring perforations at varying distances apart.
A still further object is to provide a machine of this character wherein the perforating mechanisms may be assembled in or removed from the machine so as to cause each cycle of operations of the machine to produce one or more lines of perforations or indentations, as required.
A still further object is to provide a machine wherein the perforators or punches will be automatically advanced when the female die or platen is in the operative position, and will immediately after the actuation thereof be automatically restored to normal to provide a clear field for the delivery of the perforated sheet or strip. And a still further object is to provide a machine which will act automatically and will produce a uniform quality of work at a speed commensurate with the speed of the operator in feeding the sheets or strips thereto.
The invention consists primarily in a perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed having a plurality of movable perforators or punches, spaced apart therein, and a platen or female die carried by said member and rotatable therewith, means whereby said parts of the die are brought together to clamp the sheet therebetween, means simultaneously actuating all of said perforators or punches while said dies are in the operative relation to each other, and means whereby said die parts are separated after the actuation of said perforators; and in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as are hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, (1. indicates the frame of the machine, having mounted therein a fixed shaft 6. Rotatably mounted upon said shaft is a plurality of disks 0 a driven from any desired source of power and in any desired manner, as by means of the pulley (l.
Mounted upon the disks 0 0 and rotatable therewith is one or more perforating or indenting die or dies, one part of which is adapted to be removed axially of the disks 0 .0 to afford a clear field above the other part for the feeding of a sheet or strip to be perforated, thus permitting the movement of perforators or punches in a straight line radially of said disks and permitting a line of perforations or indentations to be simultaneously made by a single operation of the die mechanism. This lineal movement of the perforators or punches will insure a clean cut perforation or indentation and avoid any possibility of the tearing or mutilation of the sheets which frequently occurs in perforating machines employing a rotary punch used for perforating sheets or strips of paper.
In a machine made in accordance with my invention, one or more perforating dies may be used .as required, the construction and operation of the machine being such that when a plurality of such dies is used they will be operated in sequence and at intervals determined by the space between succeeding lines of perforations or indentations.
Each perforating or punching die, in the form of the invention shown, comprises a male or bed die 0 having mounted therein an elongated bar f carrying a plurality of alined punches g mounted in said bar in any desired manner. The bar f is seated in a recess or channel in the bed or die part c, and is provided with a plurality of stems f carrying at their lower faces a bar it or other means acting as a seat for the springs 2'. and
permitting the transmission of movement to the punches g for the actuation of said punches.
The springs 2' being seated between the bed e and the bar 9, normally tend to retract the variance in the number of die mechanisms which may be used upona machine, and a change in the spaclng of such mechanlsms,
the bed or die. parts 6 are removable from the disks 0 c and adjustable circumferentially thereof, means being provided for setting them in any adjusted position. To simplify the construction of a machine capable of the adjustments above referred to, I provide each disk ,0 0 with a oircumferent-ial flange c 0 and connect the beds or die parts 6 thereto by means of the clamps j, which for convenience sake are pivoted at their outer ends to the bed or die part e. Said clamps are set upon the flanges c c by means of the screws j 70, respectively.
Pivotally mounted upon each bed or male die part is the other or female die part m, the operative surface of which is adapted to be moved to one side of the cooperating surface of the bed or male die part so as to permit a clear field above said last named die part for the feeding of sheets or strips thereto. To admit of this removal of one die part relative to the other, I preferably pivot. the part m at one side of the part c as at of, and make said part we of segmental form having a reinforcing or strengthening webbing m. s0 asto insure the desired rigidity of this part in the operation of the machine. Preferably the part 177. is a 90 degree segment, and this segment is guided in its movement by the slotted guide .6 carried by the bed or maledie e which projects at right angles to the face of said bed or die part 6.
Prior to the actuation of the perforators or punches g, the two die parts 6 and m are brought together to hold the sheet firmly between them, the means for accomplishing this being so constructed and arr. nged as to permit the separation of said parts after said perforators or punches have been restored to normal. In theform of the invention shown,
these means comprise a torsion spring a acting upon the oscillatory or vibratory part m, and tendlng to normally move said part away from the part 0, and a cam 0 carried by the frame a .and acting upon said part mv against the tension of the spring a to bring said part m into parallelism with the part c and exert a clamping action against said last named part through the sheet or strip.
The part m is provided with a plurality of openings adapted to receive the perforators or punches g and permit the escape of'the particles of material removed by said punches or perforators.
The cam 0 is divided into four sectionsza semicircular lower portion of a radius substantially the same as that of the disks 0 c, this radius being determined by the pivotal point m and the diameter of the anti-friction roller m carried by the die part m and bearing upon said cam. The operative surface of this portion of the cam, which is indicated at 7), is the periphery thereof, and above the horizontal diameter thereof the cam is twisted and projected toward the disks 0 0, merging into a short flat surface upon a plane parallel with the disks 0 c".
The twisted portions of the cam 0 are indicated by the reference letters p 39 and the parallel portion by the letter p this portion being of a length to hold the two die parts together during that interval when the punches g are being actuated to perforate or indent the sheet or strip. The length of the portions p p and the height of the portion 79 are determined by the are described by the compound movement of the anti-friction roller m in turning with the disks 0 0 and upon its own axis or pivot m The construction of this cam is such that the various die parts at are always under its control, thus insuring a gradual, uniform movement thereof, both in being brought toward the die part a and in being separated therefrom, thus avoiding the racking of the machine through a too rapid movement of these parts.
Secured to the shaft b on a radius which would intersect the cam surface p is a plurality of fixed cams Q 1' adapted to be engaged by anti-friction rollers r 1" carried by the bar f, the function of these cams being to engage said rollers as they are brought into the operative relation thereto by the rotation of the disks 0 c and project the bar f and its perforators or punches 9 toward the die part at while it is held in parallelism with the die part c by the surface 72 of the cam 0.
By this construction there is a perfect timing of the movement of the platen or female die part m and the perforators 9. thus insuring a rectilinear movement of the punches 9 while they are being both advanced and retracted in perforating. This construction also permits the actuation of the punches 9 during the rotary movement of the disks 0 c, thus insuring the entire die mechanism and the paper moving in unison during the actuation of said perforators or punches.
Projecting over the disks 0 0 is a feed shelf .9 from which individual sheets of paper may be fed relative to the perforating or punching mechanisms, although, if desired, any other means facilitating the feeding of the sheets or strips thereto may be substituted therefor.
lVhen using; a machine with sheets of paper, I prefer to use gripper fingers t carried by one of the bed or die parts 6, which fingers are of ordinary construction and provided with a crank t adapted to engage the projection (i upon the feed shelf for the purpose of securing a timely opening and closing of said grip-per fingers. But one perforating or punching mechanism is supplied with such gripper fingers, and when the machine is used for perforating strips, these fingers may be dispensed with entirely.

The operation of the herein described perforating machine is substantially as follows :-Inasmuch as the operation of the machine in the main will be the same whether one perforating or punching mechanism is used or whether a plurality of such mechanisms is used, a description of its operation with a single mechanism will first be entered into, and the use of a plurality of such mechanisms and the advantages thereof will be referred to thereafter. The disks 0 0 are continuously rotated, carrying with them the bed or male die 6, the extension 0 thereof and the platen or female die m. Assuming that this perforating mechanism is at the bottom of the disks, the die part m will be entirely to one side of the disk 0, leaving a clear field above the bed 6, the springs a holding the rollers m in contact with the lower periphery 7) of the cam 0. With the continued rotation of said disks, the roller m held in engagement with the cam 0 will ride over the rise 97, thus gradually turning the part m upon its pivot m and bringing it toward the bed 0. This movement, however, will be slow so as to leave a clear feeding field for the sheet or strip, the two parts being brought together only when the rollers m pass upon the straight portion 72 of the cam 0. Prior to this interval, the sheet to be perforated will have been fed upon the bed 6 and engaged by the grippers 75 so that as the platen or female die m is brought to place upon the bed 6, said bed, said platen and the sheet of paper will all be traveling at the same peripheral velocity. The rotary movement of the disks 0 0' will bring the rollers r 9* into engagement with the fixed cams g 7 while the roller m is passing over the surface 79 of the cam 0, thus causing these cams to raise the bars f f and the punch or punches to pierce the sheet or strip. The length of the contact surfaces of the cams 7 g is such that the rollers 9" r will escape therefrom before the roller m passes from the surface 7J3, thus permitting the springs 2' to retract the punch or punches (7 before the platen or female die 7% starts to move away or separate from the bed or male die 6. During the actuation of the punches 7, the bed or male die and the platen or female die with the paper between them, and said punches, will all be moving at the same speed, thus avoiding any tearing or mutilation of the paper about the perforations or indentations. Furthermore, the punch or punches 9 will always move rectilinearly of the platen or female die m, both while being advanced and retracted, thus insuring action thereof.
The construction and arrangement of parts is such as to insure timely automatic actuation of the various elements, the only attention required of the operator being the feeding of sheet-s or of a strip to the machine. The manner of forming the cam 0 is such as to secure the desired rotary movement of the platen or female die m Without such jars as would tend to rack the machine.
By using a rotary perforating or punching mechanism, the operation of the machine is substantially continuous, and when it is desired to make a series of perforations or punches at any desired distance apart, it is merely necessary to mount upon the disks 0 c a series of such perforating or punching mechanisms secured thereon at the de sired distances, thus insuring the perforating, punching or indenting of a sheet or strip at the required distances apart. Any number of these mechanisms may be mounted upon the machine within the capacity of the disks 0 c, and these mechanisms may be equally or unequally spaced apart, as required.
The operation of each mechanism will be substantially like that of every other mechanism each platen or female die m. being entirely removed from above the bed or male die 6 until after the sheet has been fed rela tive thereto, and being brought into position relative to said bed or male die only when the punching or perforating mechanism is approaching the means for actuating the punch or punches. During the greater portion of each rotation of the disks 0 c, the platens or female die parts we will be positioned entirely to one side of the bed or male die 6. The guides 6 will serve to insure a true oscillatory movement of the parts m and prevent any displacement of these parts. The rectilinear movement of the punch or punches g and the retraction thereof prior to the separation of the parts a and m will minimize any tendency of the parts m to lift the paper as it is separated from the part 0.
While the punches or perforators 9 shown inthe drawings are designed primarily for piercing holes in a sheet or strip, it is not my intention to limit myself to the use of this type of perforator or punch, as my device may be used for forming weakened lines by means of indentations, this result being secured by substituting a different form of punch for that shown in the draw ings; nor is it my intention to limit myself a sharp clean to the arrangement or number of punches or perforators shown in the drawings, it being apparent that a punch or punches in any desired number ma be used without affecting the operation of the machine.
Whatever the arrangement of the perforating mechanism, or punches carried thereby, the operation of the machine will result in the forming of openings or indentations uniformly with regard to a sheet or strip, a displacement of the sheet or strip being impossible.
It is not my intention to limit myself to the precise details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it being apparent that such may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is
1. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed having a plurality of movableperforators or punches spaced apart therein, and a platen or female die, carried by said memher and rotatable therewith, means whereby said parts of the die are brought together to clamp a sheet or strip therebetweemineans simultaneously actuating all of said perforators or punches while said die parts are in the operative relation to each other, and means whereby said die parts are separated after the actuation of said perforators.
2. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, a femaledie or platen carried by and movable laterally of said male die or bed, a movable perforator or punch support carried by said male die or bed, means 0perative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby said female die or platen is forced toward said male die or bed to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween, and means, operative while said die parts are in the clamping position, for actuating said punch support. 3. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, an oscillatory female die or platen pivotally connected to said male die, a movable perforator or punch support carried by said male die or bed, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby said female die or platen is forced toward said male die or bed to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween, and means, operative while said die parts are in the clamping position, for actuating said punch support.
4. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, an oscillatory female die or platen pivotally connected to said male die, a movable perforator or punch support carried by said male die or bed, a cam track at one side of said rotary member having a rise adapted to impart oscillatory movement to said female die or platen, means carried by said female die or platen and extending into engagement with said cam, and means, operative while said die parts are in the clamping position, for actuating said punch support.
5. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, an oscillatory female die or platen pivotally connected to said male die, a movable perforator or punch support carried by said male die or bed, a cam track at one side of said rotary member having a semicircular portion, a rise projecting toward said rotary member, a short straight portion and a fall extending therefrom to said semi-circular portion upon the opposite side thereof, means carried by said female die or platen and extending into engagement with said cam, and means, operative while said die parts are in the clamping position, for actuating said punch support;
6. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, a female die or platen carried by and movable laterally of said male die or bed, a reciprocatory bar adapted to support a perforator or punch mounted in said male die or bed, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby said female die or platen is forced toward said male die or bed to clamp a sheet therebetween, means whereby said bar may be reciprocated, and a fixed contact adapted to be engaged by said means at a fixed point in the rotation of said member, whereby said bar will be advanced and retracted while said die parts are in the clamping posi tion.
7. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, a female die or platen carried by and movable laterally of said male die or bed, a reciprocatory bar adapted to support a perforator or punch mounted in said male die or bed, springs normally acting upon said bar to hold it in its retracted position, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby said female die or platen is forced toward said male die or bed to clamp a sheet therebetween, means whereby said bar may be reciprocated, and a fixed contact adapted to be engaged by said means at a fixed point in the rotation of said member, whereby said bar will be advanced against the tension of said springs and retracted thereby while said die parts are in the clamping position.
8. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, a female die or platen carried by and movable laterally of said male die or bed, a reciprocatory bar adapted to support a perforator or punch mounted in said male die or bed, springs normally acting upon said bar to hold it in its retracted position, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby said female die or platen is forced toward said male die or bed to clamp a sheet therebetween, means whereby said bar may be reciprocated, and a plurality of divergent-1y arranged fixed cam surfaces of short length adapted to be engaged by said means at a fixed point in the rotation of said member, whereby said bar will be advanced against the tension of said springs and retracted thereby while said die parts are in the clamping position.
9. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a male die or bed mounted upon and rotatable with said member, a slotted guide projecting substantially rectilinearly of one side of said male die or bed, an oscillatory female die or platen pivotally connected to said male die and having movement in said slotted guide, a movable perforator or punch support carried by said male die or bed, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby said female die or platen is forced toward said male die or bed to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween, and means, operative while said die parts are in the clamping position, for actuating said punch support. 10. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a plurality of male dies or beds spaced circumferentially about said member, each said die or bed being provided with a plurality of movable perforators or punches, a female die or platen carried by and movable with each said male die or bed, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby the parts of each succeeding pair of dies are successively brought together to clamp a,
sheet or strip therebetween, means acting simultaneously upon all of the perforators or punches carried by each male die or bed while its female die or platen is in the clamping position in relation thereto, said means being common to all said male dies and acting successively thereon, and means whereby the parts of each die are separated after the actuation of its perforators or punches.
11. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a plurality of male dies or beds spaced circumferentially about and removably mounted upon said member, each said die or bed being provided with a plurality of movable perforators or punches,
a female die or platen carried by and movable with each said male die or bed, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby the parts of each succeeding pair of dies are successively brought together to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween, means acting simultaneously upon all the perforators or punches carried by each male die or bed while its female die or platen is in the clamping position in relation thereto, said means being common to all said male dies and acting successively thereon, and means whereby the parts of each die are separated after the actuation of its perforators or punches.
12. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a plurality of male dies or beds spaced upon and adjustable circumferentially about said member, each said die or bed being provided with a plurality of movable perforators or punches, a female die or platen carried by and movable with each said male die or bed, means operative at one point of the rotation of said member whereby the parts of each succeeding pair of dies are successively brought together to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween, means acting simultaneously upon all of the perforators or punches carried by each male die or bed while its female die or platen is in the clamping position in relation thereto, said means being common to all said male dies and acting successively thereon, and means whereby the parts of each die are separated after the actuation of its perforators or punches. 13. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a plurality of male dies or beds spacedcircumferentially about said member, a reciprocatory perforator or punch support carried by each said male die or bed, a female die or platen carried by and movable laterally of each said male die or bed, means operative at one point in the rotation of said member whereby said female dies or platens are successively oscillated laterally and forced toward their respective male dies or beds to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween,means operative while each pair of said die parts is in the clamping posit-ion for actuating said perforator or punch support, said means being common to all said male dies and acting successively on said supports, and means whereby after the actuation of any said support, the male die and female die cooperating therewith are permitted to separate.
14. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a plurality of male dies or beds spaced circumferentially about and removably mounted upon said member, a reciprocatory perforator or punch support carried by each said male die or bed, a female die or platen carried by and movable laterally of each said male die or bed, means operative at one point in the rotation of said member whereby said female dies or platens are successively oscillated laterally and forced toward their respective male dies or beds to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween, means operative while each pair of said die parts is in the clamping position for actuating said perforator or punch support, said means being common to all said male dies and acting successively on said supports, and means whereby after the actuation of any said support, the male die and female die cooperating therewith are permitted to separate.
15. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a plurality of male dies or beds spaced upon and adjustable circumferentially about said member, a reciprocatory perforator or punch support carried by each said male die or bed, a female die or platen carried by and movable laterally of each male die or bed, means operative at one point in the rotation of said member whereby said female dies or platens are successively oscillated laterally and forced toward their respective male dies or beds to clamp a sheet or strip therebetween, means operative while each pair of said die parts is in the clamping position for actuating said perforator or punch support, said means being common to all said male dies and acting successively on said supports, and means whereby after the actuation of any said support, the male die and female die cooperating therewith are permitted to separate. 7
16. A perforating machine embodying therein a rotary member, a plurality of male dies or beds spaced circumferentially about said member, each said die or bed being provided with a reciprocatory perforator or punch support, a female die or platen rotatable with each said male die or bed and pivoted thereto so as to be movable laterally thereof, a cam track at one side of said membercommon to all said female dies or platens, said cam having a lateral rise, a straight section and a reverse lateral fall whereby said female dies are successively oscillated laterally to clamp a sheet or respective male dies, means carried by each male die adapted to continually advance upon said cam track, and a plurality of strip upon their fixed cams projecting radially of said rotary member in a direction to intersect said straight portion of said cam track, whereby the supports of said male dies are successively actuated while their respective female dies are in the clamping position relative thereto, and means whereby each of said female dies is automatically moved away from its male die after the forators or punches.
