HERMAN BURCHESS, OF CHXCAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO ELIAS BOSS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y. Y
HINGE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN BUnoHnss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hinges and more particularly to a hinge adapted for use especially upon suit cases.
The object of my invention is the production of a hinge as mentioned which, when in use will permit of the cover of the suit case being swung to entirely open position or which, may be adjusted, to limit the opening movement of the cover so as to support the same in substantially vertical position.
A further object is the production of a hinge which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a suit case equipped with a hinge embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hinge detached, Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the component parts of the hinge disconnected.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a leaf 1 provided at one edge with a pintle 2 secured to saidedge by means of ears 3 and 3 v which project from the terminals of saidv edge, the outer ends of said ears being preferably formed integral with said pintle as illustrated. Coperating with the leaf 1 is a second leaf 4 formed at one edge with an outwardly looped portion 5 which constitutes a bearing for the pintle 2 which is adapted to snugly engage said portion 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Also formed upon the leaf 4 are shoulders 6 adapted for engagement with the ears 3 and 3 of leaf 1 to constitute a stop therefor and limit the amplitude of swinging which is permitted said leaf as will be readily understood. The ears 3 and 3 however are separated a distance 0reater than the width of the bearing portion 5 of leaf 4 so as to permit of shifting Specification of Letters Patent.

of the leaf 1 relative to leaf 4. This being so if it is desired to permit of entire freedom of movement of leaf 1 it is only necessary to shift the latter until the ear 3 thereof registers with a slot or notch 7 out in the corresponding shoulder 6 and until the ear 8 is out of registration with the other of said shoulders, when the amplitude of swinging movement permitted said leaf 1 will be increased so as to permit of the same swinging to the dott-ed line position shown in Fig. 2.
ln order to reinforce the bearing loop 5 of leaf 4 the former is provided with an eXtension 8 which is perforated so as to permit of the same being rigidly secured to the adjacent wall of thesuit ease or other device in conjunction with which the hinge is employed. rlhrough the provision of the eX- tension 8 it is evident that the loop 5 will be materially reinforced or strengthened so as to be adapted to withstand the severe strains to which the same is subjected in use.
At the rearward or inner side of the leaf 4 is arranged a rubbing plate 9 which is adapted to contact with the inner side of pintle 2 so as to protect the adjacent wall of the suit case which otherwise would be worn through engagement therewith of said pintle in rotating. Through the provision of plate 9 injury to the adjacent wall of the suit case through contact therewith of the pintle of the hinge will be obviated, this rubbing or wearing of the pintle upon the suit case wall being one of the objections to hinges of this character in use at the present time.
In using the hinge the leaf 4 together with the plate 9 is secured as by riveting to the body 10 of the suit case adjacent the upper edge thereof, the extension 8 being secured to the angularly disposed flange 11 provided at said edge of the suit case body as shown in Fig. 1. The leaf 1 is secured as by riveting to the cover 12 of the suit case. When the leaves 1 and 4 are in the relative positions shown in full lines in Fig. 2 the suit case cover will be limited in its opening movement, the same being permitted to swing only to its vertical position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which position the same will be supported by reason of the shoulders 6 on leaf 4 which will be engaged by the ears 3 and 3 on leaf 1. When it is desired to entirely open the suit case cover it Y until the ear 3 registers with slot or notch 7 in which event the cover will be released so as to swing toits entirely open position as also shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable o-f variation and modication without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the .precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
` Having described my invention what I claim as ynew and desire-to secure by Letters Patent is:
'1. A hinge comprising` a leaf having a pintle; a second leaf having an outwardly looped portion constituting a bearing for said :pintle; and a shoulder on said second mentioned lea-f adapted for engagement by said first 'mentioned leaf to limit swinging of the flatter in one direction, said first mentione-d 'leaf being adapted to be shifted to disengage said shoulder and permit of a greater amplitude of swinging of said leaf, substantially as described.
2. A hinge comprising a leaf having a pintle; a second leaf having an outwardly looped portion constitut-ing a bearing for said pintle; and a shoulder on said second mentioned vleaf adapted for engagement by said lirst mentioned `leaf to permit swinging of the latter in one direction, a portion of said second mentioned leaf being out away and said ffirst mentioned leaf being adapted to be shifted -to .register with said cut away ortion and disenffao'e said shoulder to erzmit of a ygreater amplitude of swinging of said leaf, substantially as described.
3. A hinge comprising a leaf having a ipintle provided at one edge thereof and sup- =ported by itwo ears projecting from said, edge-g a second leaf lhaving an outwardly? looped portion constituting a bearing fori said pintle; and a shoulder on said second l mentioned leaf adapted for engagement by said supporting ears of said first mentioned leaf to limit swinging` of the latter in one direction, a portion of said shoulder being cut away and said first mentioned leaf being adapted to be shifted to move said ears from engagement with said shoulder and into registration with said cut away portion to permit o-f a greater amplitude of swinging of said leaf, substantially as described.
t. A hinge comprising a leaf having a pintle; a second leaf having an outwardly looped portion constituting a bearing vfor said pintle; a shoulder on said second mentioned leaf adapted for engagement by said first mentioned leaf to limit swinging of the latter in one direction, said first mentioned leaf being adapted `to ybe shifted to `diseiigage said shoulder and permit of a greater amplitude of swinging of said leaf; and a reinforcing extension on said second mentioned leaf formed for fastening in position, substantially as described.
A hinge comprising a leaf having a ointle' a second leaf havino' an o-utwardl looped portion constituting a bearing for said pintle; a shoulder on said second inentioned leaf adapted for engagement by said first mentioned leaf to limit swinging of fthe latter in one direction, lsaid first mentioned vleaf being adapted to be shifted to disengage said shoulder and permitof a greater amplitude of swinging of said leaf; and a rubbing ,plate provided at the inner side of said second mentioned .lea-f for contact with the inner side of said pintle, substantially as `described..
In testimony whereof I have 'signed my name to :this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
