CUTTING MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARLOS HOLLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cutting mechanism, and with respect to its more specific features, to mechanism adapted to cut paper and similar material.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a practical mechanism for cutting or severing a thin strip or web of paper and provide a fine severed edge substantially free from irregularities.
, Another object of the invention is to provide an eificient device for severing a thin web without tearing the web.
Still another ob ect of the invention is to provide a simple mechanismof the character referred to, in which the cutters shall be relieved from undue wear.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of practical means for accurately cutting relatively thin material of uneven thickness or material of different thicknesses.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention'aceordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is shown one of the various possible embodiments of this invention, and wherein similar reference characters refer to similar views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portlon of a machine provided with the improved cutting mechanism; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line X-X of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, partly broken away and showing a detail of the cutter platen.

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the surface of a cutter platen, the same forming an angular extension of a bar or plate 2 which is adapted to be moved upwardly and clownwardly across the plane in which the material to be cut lies, and also longitudinally thereof, as by means of the rods 3 and 1, which are reciprocated from a suitable source of motion, as explained in the prior application.
Nhen being cut, the material is supported upon the surface or platen l and at that time the platen is stationary.

In the prior application the material to be cut is referred to as a cover web on account of its association with other elements, but it will be understood that while this embodiment of the invention is especially adapted to cut a cover web, it is equally well adapted to cut any web of the character referred to. In the present case, however, the web to be cut is quite thin, soft and flexible, one face of the web being preferably glazed, and ornamental to that extent, and the other face being provided with moist adhesive such as glue. The web is properly positioned upon the platen with its glued face uppermost and the disk 5 reciprocated transversely of the web, in its passage cooperating with the platen to sever the web. The disk being relatively thin and its edge being beveled and sharp, the edges of the severed sections will be fine and free from any substantial irregularities. On account of the fact that in the complete machine, as disclosed in the prior application, the platen 1 is moved into and out of the cutting plane, in order that the folding and pressing operations may be accomplished by adjacent parts, provision is made for properly supporting the cutting knife during such movements. At the same time it is to be noted that it is important to provide an ei'licient, cooperative relationship between the cutting knife and the platen when cutting conditions have been restored, and to these and other ends the present invention comprises mechanism permitting the movement of the platen relatively to the knife and the operative movements of the knife without substantially interfering with the accurate subsequent positioning of the knife and its cooperation with the platen in the severing operation.
The numeral 6 represents a horizontal cross piece or portion of the frame having a horizontal groove 7, the sides 8, 8 of which are undercut as illustrated. The cutting disk 5 is preferably mounted on a transversely reciprocating carrying plate, or carriage 9which is guided in the way or groove on the front side of the fixed cross piece 6 and is actuated by means of a connecting rod 10 which is moved at suitable intervals to reciprocate the carriage in the way of the cross piece, the amplitude of the movement of the carriage being sufficient to carry the knife 5 beyond the cooperative cutting surface of the platen 1. This latter position is illustrated in Fig. 1, and it will be observed that as the platen is connected to the devices which give it movement at a point beyond the extreme limit of movement of the knife, the
platen surface is depressed or cut away, as at 11, in order to permit an upward movement of the platen relative to the knife.
In order to relieve the web cutter from undue wear and to accommodate a web of uneven thickness, the cutter disk 5 is yieldingly connected to the carriage .9. Accordingly said cutter disk is journaled at the lower end of a supporting plate 12, adapted to slide up and down in a dovetail recess 13 V in the face of the carriage 9, and yieldingly held down by a spring 14 mounted on a pin 15 and engaging freely the upper side of a pin 16 on the plate 12. Preferably, the edges of the recess 13 which receive the plate 12 are undercut and the edges of the plate 12 are beveled to engage therewith to retain the plate in relative position, one edge of the re cess being formed by the undercut removable block 17 to enable the parts to be readily assembled. A pin 18 on the supporting plate 12 engages a slot 19 in the carriage to limit the downward movement of said plate, or movement toward the plat en, and prevent the same from being disengaged from the carriage when the cutter is to one side of and 01% the platen surface 1. The lateral edge of the platen supporting bar or plate 2 is inclined or curved on each side, as at 20, to provide a guide to form an easy passage for the cutter to and from the platen surface 1.
'The operation of the mechanism will be largely obvious fro-m the above description. The web to be cut is fed intermittently over the platen surface 1, resting thereupon, and at determined intervals the rod 10 is actuated to draw the carriage along the guide-- rest at a point beyond the edges of the web way of the cross piece 6. The spring 14 will yieldingly press the cutter against-the platen during its movement across the platen and the web will be severed, the cutter coming to on either side and above the depressed portion or recess 11 of the platen. Between successive movements of the cutter across the platen the web is fed, so that the web is severed by the cutter in its movement in each direction. The guide surface 20 serves to lift the knife gradually to the platen surface against the resistance of the spring 14, and
the spring let also serves to ease the knife over the edge of the web and over any uneven or rough places that may be encountered, besides providing a yielding contact with the platen surface. In the interest of accuracy of cutting the guide 6 is of relatively heavy construction, the movement of the cutter across the platen being as straight as possible, and in order that the cutter disk shall have its edge maintained in a predetermined cutting plane, it is preferred to provide the supporting plate 12, the movement 90 of which at an angle to the extent of the guide 6 serves to move the cutter bodily, while maintaining the cutter in a constant plane. Thus by the above described construction is accomplished, among others, the objects hereinbefore stated.
It is to be understood that the arrangement of the cutter platen is the same at each side, as in Fig. 1, and that the cutting disk 5 cooperates with each side of the platen, as explained for the side illustrated.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a cutter platen 115 adapted to support material to be cut, a yieldingly mounted knife, means adapted to move the knife relatively to the platen and on and off the platen to cut the material, and a guide adapted to ease the knife onto me the surface of the platen.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a cutter platen adapted to support material to be cut, a yieldingly mounted knife, and means adapt- 125 ed to move the knife relatively to the platen and on and off the platen to cut the material, the platen having an inclined portion to ease the knife onto its surface.
3. In an apparatus of the character de- 130 scribed, in combination, a fixed guide, a rotary cutter guided thereby, a cutter platen adapted to move into and out of the plane of cutting cooperation With the cutter, means permittin the cutter to move to and from the platen, and means to limit the extent of its movement in the direction toward the platen.
In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a rotatably mounted cutter, a cutter platen, and means adapted to move said cutter transversely of said platen in cutting, said platen being adapted to move into and out of the plane of cutting cooperation with said cutter.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a rotatably mounted cutter, a cutter platen, means adapted to move said cutter transversely of said platen in cutting, and means adapted to cause yielding pressure between said cutter and platen while cutting, said platen being adapted to move into and out of the plane of cutting cooperation with said cutter.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a cutter platen adapted to support material to be cut, means adapted to move said platen into and out of material supporting position, a cutter, and means adapted to move said cutter transversely of said platen in cutting.

10. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, in combination, a rotatably mounted cutter, a cutter platen, a support for said platen extending transversely beyond its cooperative cutting surface, an inclined guide surface joining said support and said platen, and means adapted to move said cutter transversely of said platen in cutting and into position opposite said support, said support being spaced from the edge of said cutter when in position opposite thereto.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a fixed guide, a carrying plate guided thereby, said plate having a dovetailed recess in its face augularly disposed relatively to said guide, a supporting pin on said plate, a supporting plate guided in said recess, a cutter disk rotatably mounted in said supporting plate, the plane of said disk being parallel to the plane of movement of said carrying plate, and a spring engaging said pin and supporting plate and disposed to exert its tension to move said supporting plate in said recess in one direction, said carryin plate and supporting plate being provided with a pin and slot respectively to limit the movement of one relatively to the other.
