'.DRAW-STRING Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d Ian 245,191,.
Application filed August 1, 1913. seriai'ub. 782,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTHA CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and'St-ate of New York, have invented a new and Improved Draw-String, of which the following is a" The object of the invention is" to provide a new and improved draw string or banddesigned for use in the hem of the gathered waistband of a washable garment and ar-. ranged to allow of conveniently and quickly removing the draw string or band prior to washing the garment and to permit the ready insertion of the draw string or band after the garment is washed.
In order to produce the desired result use is made of a drawstring provided at the ends with buttons adapted to engage buttonholes in the garment on which the draw stringis' used, one of the said buttons having a loop adapted to engage the other button.
A practical embodiment of the invention is representedin the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all-the views.
. Figure l is a perspective view of a skirt provided with the improvement, the placket of the skirt being open and the band being shown in position for insertion into thehem; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the band in posit-ion in the hem and with the flaps open; Fig. 3 is a like view of the same outer flap turned back; Fi 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view of t e improvement; Fig. 5 is an enlarged face view of the band button and hook; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same; Fig, I 7 is a face view of the band buckle and button; and Fig. 8 is a plan view of the same. j
The skirt is provided with the usual waist band A, and overlapping-opening and closing flaps B and O,.and with a hem D-exte'nding along the waistband A. The-ends of the hem D terminate short distances from the opening and closing fiapsB and C, and, buttonholes E and E are provided at the ends of the waistband A adjacent the opening removably held a band F preferably of an elastic material and provided at one end with a combination buckle Gr and button G,
v adg ustable on the end of the .band F while the button G is adapted to eiigage the butt'onhole E to fasten this end of the band in place on the waistband. The other end of the band F is provided with a combination loop H, button Hand attaching loop 1-1 on a which latter this end of the band F is Itastened. The-loop H is adapted to be hooked onto the button G after the latter has been passed through the buttonhole E, and the button H is adapted to engage thebuttonhole E so that the flaps B and C ,are fastened together and at the same time the ends of the band F are removably fastened to the ends of the waistband of the garment. By
the arrangement described the ends of the band F are removably secured to the ends of the waistband A by the use of the buttons G and H and the buttonholes E, E, it being understood that whenever it is desired to wash the garment the-buttons G, H are disengaged from the buttonholes E, E to allow of pulling the band F out of the hem D. After the garment has been washed the band F is reinserted in the hem D and for this purpose the loop H is'used for pushing the bands through the hem D, as indicated in Fig. 1, thesaid loop serving as a needle usually employed for drawing a band through a hem. After the band has been reinserted the button G is engaged with the buttonhole E and the button H- is engaged with the buttonhole E and then the loop H is hooked onto the outer end of the button Gr so that the flaps B and C' are held locked in closed position.
By using the elastic band F the waistband A and the hem D are held in gathered positionduring the time the flaps are open and while the elastic band F is in contracted condition. When the garment is closed the elastic band F is expanded around the waist of the wearer to insure snug fitting of the WaistbandA on the waist of the wearer. By providing thebuckle G the elastic band F can-be lengthened or shortened to suit different sized waists I Havin hus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A drawstring adapted to be inserted in the hem of a garment, buttons on the ends of said string adapted to engage bi'ittonholes in said garment, one of said buttons having a loop adapted to engage the otherlirutton.
2. A draw string adapted to be in erted in 'loop held on the other end of the draw string, the said loop being adapted to -en-,
gage the said buckle button and the said buttons being adapted to engage'but'tonholes l in said garment.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification 1n the presence of 10 two subscrlblng witnesses.
