DEVICE FOR MOUNTING CASTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1'7, 191%.
Application filed January 5, 1914. I Serial No. 810,371.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Device for Mounting Casters, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates particularly to the legs and casters of such cots, bedsteads, or other articles as are made of angle iron, or at least, the legs thereof.
An object of my invention is to provide caster bearings formed integrally with the sides of the angle iron legs, thereby to provide a simple and strong construction.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts. in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the lower portion of an angle iron leg embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view of the lower portion of the leg in the process of carrying out my in-' vention; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the bearing members complete; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower end of the leg, inn eating a slight modification of the invention.
In the illustrated example, the numeral 10 indicates an angle iron leg, which may represent the leg of a cot, bedstead, or other article having legs of this character. To provide means for mounting and affording a bearing for the spindle llfor any approved form of caster 12, the lower end of the leg isslitted vertically at the-angle to provide separate terminals 13, which are bent at right angles to the vertical sides of the legs and disposed horizontally adjacent to each other. The terminals 13 thus form a lower bearing for the spindle 11, and are adapted to rest on theflange or shoulder 12 of the caster. In order to provide an upper hearing I slit one or both sides of the angle iron leg at 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 2,
thereby producing a tongue 14 integral with the leg and joined at one end thereto. The said tongue 14 is then bent inwardly from the vertical position shown in Fig. 2 to the horizontal position indicated in the other figures. Thus said tongue will be vertically spaced from and overhang the lower-bent terminals 13. To accommodate the spindle 1'1, alined holes 15 are formed in the bent terminals 13 and in the tongue 14, the
spindle being flanged over or upset at its upper end, as at 11, above the said tongue. I
A single tongue 14 is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, but I may form a similar tongue 14 integral with the adjacent side of the angle iron, as in Fig. 4, in which event the tongues 14, 14 will overlap at their ends and lie adj acent to each other. The spindle will thus extend at the top and bottom through members integral with both sides of the angle iron leg, and form a connection between the respective bent terminals and tongues.
It will be obvious that the above described means for mounting the spindle may be produced cheaply and expeditiously, and will result in a. strong, practical mounting for the caster.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A metallic article formed with an angle iron leg, the lower end of the leg being slitted at the angle and the terminals of the sides being bent to the horizontal position to lie adjacent to each other, one member of the angle iron leg having a U-shaped cut forming a tongue, and the said tongue being bent inwardly to' overhang horizontally above the lower bent terminals, the said tername to this specification in the presence of two SllbSCIlblIlg witnesses.
CHARLES J. BELL.
