SHEET-DELIVERY APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM B. \Varr, a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at New York, in the county of New York and Stat of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Delivery Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sheet delivery apparatus which is essentially adapted for use in connection with a sheet conveying apparatus described in U. S. Patent #1,04- l,713 granted to me November 19th 1912.
The invention comprehends devices designed to automatically deliver the sheet after it has been embossed by the cylinders, without the employment of a fly. In a machine of this kind the sheet of paper is embossed on both sides by means of a series of cylinders arranged vertically in pairs. After the sheet is embossed by the last pair of cylinders, the head of the sheet is guided by means of vertically positioned adjustable fingers to a shelf where it is momentarily stopped until the tail of the sheet is free from the cylinder and gravitates downward on to a delivery board positioned belowthe shelf. On the shelf are mounted a series of adjustable detents for limiting the movement of the head of the sheet after it strikes the shelf so that when the tail of the sheet is released from the cylinder and drops downward the head will follow it and the sheet will flatten or straighten itself on to the delivery board. By reason of the peculiar formation of the lower forward portion of each detent it prevents the head of the sheet from. falling ofi the shelf, until the tail is free and the momentum of the sheet sliding down the delivery board will free the head. The shelf is swingingly mounted on the frame, the object being to set it at any angle to compensate for the different speeds of the machine and various grades of paper used.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

the frames between which are rotatively mounted a series of cylinders b and c. The cylinders are arranged vertically in pairs and the first pair 6 is adapted to emboss a sheet of paper (Z 011 one side, while the other pair of cylinders 0 will emboss the sheet on the other side. The sheet is carried from the first pair of cylinders to the second pair by means of traveling belts e. The belts and the cylinders are rotated in the required direction by means of gears f driven by a pulley connection or electric motor.
A series of fingers g are mounted on a rod k fixed in brackets 2' secured to the rear por tion of the frame. These fingers are secured to the rod by means of set screws j and the rod is adjustably mounted in bosses formed in the bracket. The rod is held in position by set screws 70 threaded in the bosses. Then it is desired to set the fingers the screws in are loosened and a lever m is actuated, thereby oscillating the rod and positioning the fingers. These fingers are preferably placed at an incline with the upper end of each finger close to the periphery of the cylinder, so that it will guide the head of the sheet from the cylinder.
A shelf or stop n is arranged below the fingers and this shelf is provided with an adjustable projecting rim n at the front portion of the shelf. The shelf is mounted on a rod 0 which is journaled in brackets fixed to the frame, and set screws 7) hold the shelf in a fixed position. By loosening the set screws the shelf can be swung to any desired position.
Mounted on the shelf are a series of detents g each detent having an upwardly projecting portion 7' formed at the front por tion of the detent, and a stop 7' extending downwardly. The detent has slots 8 of suitable construction to co-act with set screws t. The set screws are threaded into the top of the shelf and the rear set screw has a spring at for tilting the rear end of the detent, with a foot 1' resting on the shelf as a fulcrum. The slots allow the detents to be set back or forth in relation to the fingers and the rim of the shelf. The forward screw or pin 6 remains in a fixed position relative to the detent and the shelf, and it merely serves to prevent lateral movement of the detent.
A curtain 'v is hung on a rod fixed to lugs situated at the rear portions of the fingers, to prevent any currents of air generated by the velocity of the cylinders or created by atmospheric conditions from striking and interfering with the passage of the sheet while it is guided down the inclined faces of the fingers. A delivery board to is arranged at an incline between the frames below the shelf, so as to provide space through which the sheet may fall.
The sheet of paper is passed from the feed board between the first pair of cylinders where it is embossed on one side, the head of the sheet is then guided to the second pair of cylinders and embossed on the reverse side. It is then passed around the top cylinder of the second pair and the head of the sheet is disengaged from the cylinder by the fingers. then guided by the fingers until it reaches the shelf where it is stopped and held by the detents until the tail of the sheet is released from the cylinder and drops on to the delivery board. As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the tail of the sheet (Z when released from the cylinder 0 drops downward until the end of the sheet strikes the board w thereby curling the tail portion of the sheet as indicated, in the meantime the head portion of the sheet has curved itself over the rim n and the extreme end has moved under the foot stop 7 where it is momentarily stopped, then by reason of the forward sliding movement of the lower portion of the sheet along the delivery board the head of the sheet is released and drops down on the inclined delivery board.
It will be readily understood that the detents combined with the fingers and the adjustable shelf constitute means whereby the sheet is automatically guided and falls fiat on to the delivery board. In'fact the delivery devices can be. set for any thickness of paper or to compensate for the different velocities of the machine.
I claim:
1. In a sheet delivery apparatus the combination with a plurality of cylinders, of fingers adjustably arranged to guide the head of the sheet, means located below the fingers for supporting the head of the sheet, adjustable detents positioned to coact with the means for momentarily stopping the The head of the sheet is head of the sheet, and a delivery board located below the detents.
2. In a sheet delivery apparatus the combination with a plurality of cylinders for embossing sheets of paper on both sides, fingers swingingly arranged to guide the head of the sheet after it has been embossed on both sides, a shelf positioned in the path of the sheet, detents mounted on the shelf for momentarily holding the head of the sheet, and a delivery board located below the detents.
3. In a sheet delivery apparatus the combination with a plurality of cylinders for embossing sheets of paper on both sides, fingers swingingly arranged to guide the head of the sheet after it has been embossed on both sides, a shelf swingingly mounted in the path of the sheet, detents adjustably arranged on the shelf for momentarily holding the head of the sheet, and a delivery board situated below the shelf.
4. In a sheet delivery apparatus the combination with a plurality of cylinders for embossing sheets of paper on both sides, fingers swingingly arranged to guide the head of the sheet after it has been embossed on both sides, a shelf having a projecting rim, said shelf being swingingly mounted in the path of the sheet, detents adjust-ably positioned on the shelf, and an inclined delivery board situated below the shelf.
5. In a sheet delivery apparatus the combination with a plurality of cylinders for embossing sheets of paper on both sides, fingers swingingly arranged to guide the head of the sheet after it has been embossed on both sides, a shelf having a projecting rim, said shelf being swingingly mounted in the path of the sheet, detents adjustably positioned on the shelf, a curtain located at the back of the fingers, and a delivery board situated below the shelf.
