CLAPB GARD-JOINT.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,903, dated May 16, 1854;` Reissued September To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM BAKER, of`

the city of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Preparation and Joining of Olapboards for the Siding of Houses and other Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature and principal obj ect of my invention is so to construct and form the boards for the siding of houses, that in put ting them together and nailing them to the frame of the building the heads of the nails may be covered, while at the same time the chief characteristic of clapboarding, the overlapping of one board upon another for shedding the water, shall bepreserved.

In Figure l of the annexed drawings A and B represent transverse sect-ions of two of my clapboards as nailed to the frame of the building, showing by the connection of the two at C, the manner in which they are dressed and put together. N, N, is a stud of the building frame showing the manner in which they are laid against the studs to which they are to be nailed.

Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a. single board, shown separate from the building, exhibit-ing the character of the dressing on the respective edges, A being t-he upper, and B being the lower edge when laid on.

The configuration of the cut a, b, e, in the lower edge of the board, is clearly shown in both figures of the drawings. Itis made to correspond to the upperedge A, so that they lit together as seen at the conjunction C, (Fig. l). The line e, in this cut, is not made directly down the edge of the` board parallel to the rear line of the board, but is a little oblique, corresponding to the front line C; otherwise, it is evident, it V.would not make a close fit to the other board. The dressing of Itllrie upper edge of the board is shown at It is plain that if the board B, (Fig. 1,) is iirst laid on and nailed near its upper edge, as shown at F, that the lower edge of the next board A, when brought to its place, as shown in the figure, will be held securely by the lock a, without nailing, and that the nail therefore may be driven in this board also at F, near the upper edge, and so on with each successive board. It is also plain that each successive board, by its extended lip D, will cover the heads of the nails driven in the preceding board as here shown. It is proper to make the lip D, about three-fourths of an inch in length, both for the purpose of effectually shedding the water, and to cover the heads of the nails as here described. The lips a, and z', are each about one-fourth of an inch long.

The drawings exhibit the clapboards of the full ordinary width and thickness, and the several members of the joint of the proper relative dimensions substantially.

Having thus described my invention, and the objects to be attained by it, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the lock a, in the rear of the joint, with the extended lip D, in front, constructed and used in conjunction, for the purposes of efecting the objects of the invention as specified, t-he whole being constructed, combined and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
