This invention relates to safety valves :t'or pipe lines and has for its object the production of a simple and etlicient emergency shut-oft which will automatically close the valve as soon as the pressure passing througlii the pipe has been reduced below a predetermined point.
Another object of this invention is the prodiurtion ot' a simple and eliicient means whereby the valve may be allowed to operate and also whereby the valve may be thrown out of operation.
lVitlii these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereina't'ter fully described and claimed. y

13y referring to the drawings, it will be seen that l designates the inlet valve easing which carries at its upper end a discharge compartment 2. This discharge compartment 2 terminates in a discharge pipe 3 which extends laterally oi. the discharge (-on'ipartl'nent 2. A cover plate t is bolted upon the upper end of the discharge coinpartn'ient 2 and is secured thereto by means of bolts passing through the laterally ex tending 'langes 6 formed upon the compartment 2. The cover plate is provided with a centrally arranged upwardly extending collar 7 through which passes the valve stem 8. A packing 9 is placed within the collar 7 and held in a set position therein by means of a plug 10.

and this stem 8 works through a bridge 1i formed in the inlet valve casing 1. A coil spring to is positioned upon the stem 5% and normally exerts an upward pressure upon the valve l3 to 'lorce the valve upon its seat when the pressure ol? the air, gas. or liquid passing through the casing is reduced below a 1iredetermined point.

constitute means 'lor firmly securing the bracket to both the plate l: and the diaphragm casing 10. ll; will be seen that the vertical portion of the bracket 97 will en gage the edge of the diaphragm casing 16 and thereby constitute an eliicient support or brace for the diaphragm casing and prevent the same from swinging laterally and out oi alinement with the plate 4t whicln it this lateral swing were allowed, would be likely to cause the valve stem 8 to become twisted and hence prevent the same from working. This brace 27 will, therefore, constitute a very eliicient means for anchoring the diaphragm casing 16 in a set position and relieve the strain from the supply pipe 19.
When the device is in operation, the valve 26 is closed and the air, or liquid which is passing through the apparatus will pass up from the supply casing 1 through the communicating pipe 23 to the pipe 19 and into the diaphragm casing 16 thereby act ing upon the diaphragm 21 and forcing the valve 13 out from the valve seat 11 thereby allowing the material, air, gas or liquid, to pass through the valve stem and finally be discharged trom the discharge pipe 3.
In case it should be found that it is necessary to repair the valve or apparatus, the valve 2% in the communicating pipe 23 is closed and the valve in the pipe 25 is opened by allowing the pressure within the diaphragm casing 16 to be relieved from the diaphragm and pass out through the pipe 25 and the discharge pipe 3. As the pressure is in this manner relieved, the spring will force the valve 13 to a closed position upon the seat and prevent the further escape of gas, air or liquid passing therethrough.
It should be understood that the present catch or valve, is adapted to be used upon high or low pressure lines for gas, steam, air and water.
The principal object of the invention as above stated is to produce an eilicient shutoii' which will automatically hold the valve in an open position to permit the passage of air, steam or water therethrough when the pressure reaches a predetermined point. It should be further understood that should it be desired to hold the valve in an open position the air, gas, water or steam, which may be used in connection with the valve may be allowed to pass through the pipe 19 into the casing 16, and by securing the desired pressure therein and closing the valves land 26 the pressure may be so retained as to hold the valve 13 from its seat and is claimed as new, is
