Description

FIFE-581 GR le 9e662 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE MOTT, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO B. F. GREENWOOD, OF HOUSTON,
TEXAS.
PAINT.
1,089,662 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 10, 1914.

it when under water, and to render it fire;
roof.
A further object is to provide a paint which will not crack, peel or run in hot weather.
The invention consists primarily in a combination of ingredients proportioned as follows :-Venetian red 10 lbs., salt 10 lbs.,
brown mineral 10 lbs, sulfur 15 lbs., Cayenne pepper 2 lbs, rosin 15 lbs., water-gas tar 1 1b., gasolene or kerosene 1 pt.
In the preparation of the paint the ingredients above mentioned, with the exception of the tar and the gasolene or kerosene, are thoroughly mixed. They are then placed with the tar and heated, the mixture being thoroughly stirred during the heating 0perat-ion. The rosin, which is thoroughly pulverized before being placed in the mixture, separates from the balance of the mixture during the first portion of this heating operation and floats on top of the mixture while it is being stirred and until the rosin is completely melted whereupon further stirring of the mixture will result in the thorough commingling of the rosin with the other ingredients. While the paint is hot it is applied to the wood to be protected and,
Application filed July 6, 1912. Serial No. 707,974.
when cool, forms a hard glazed surface which renders the wood water and fire proof.
It has been found that the brown mineral constituting one of the ingredients of the paint, and which is a rocky formation containing an excess of iron oxid, is advantageous in that it gives the composition the quality of being impervious and unchangeable in all kinds of weather, especially in hot weather, thus preventing the paint from softening and giving it a high gloss. The Venetian red serves to blend the colors and produces an attractive paint. The salt (NaCl) and the tar form a mixture which will not easily ignite and which therefore produces a fire proof coating. The pepper permeates the wood and thus serves to protect it from the ravages of worms and other wood pests.
'hile the paint is intended primarily for use on wood, it ha been found to be a useful protection for metal inasmuch as it protects it from rust and gives it an attractive appearance.
\Vhat is claimed is A paint for rendering wood fire. water and worm proof, consisting of venetian red ten pounds, salt ten pounds, brown mineral ten pounds,ilfur fifteen pounds, Cayenne pepper two pounds, .rosin fifteen pounds, ester-gas tar one pound, and gasolene one pint, substantially as described? In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
