JAMES JESSE ROWE, OF ILFORD, ENGLAND.
COMBINATION PUNCH AND CUTTER FOR MOTOR-CYCLE BELTS.
nosassv.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 10, 1914.
Application filed October 30, 1911. Serial No. 657,680.
To all 'LU/0m it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES Jesse Rowe, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 189 Ilford Lane, Ilford, Essex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Punches and Critters for Motor-Cycle Belts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention for an improved combined punch and cutter for motor cycle belts has for its object a simple and etlicient apparatus by which the belt can be punched and its end trimmed by one operation and consists of a four sided frame having tapering sides to match the usual V belt and of a belt punch operated by the usual screw and a straight cutter mounted to slide in the end of the frame and connected to the screw so as to be operated by it.
In the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings :MFigui-es l and 2 are a vertical section and a front. elevation, respectively, of one form of face improved belt cutter and punch. Figs. 3 and l are similar views of another form of belt cutter and punch.
In one way of carrying out this invention, the combined punch and cutter consists of a metal frame a wider at the top than at the bottom to adapt it to lit v -shaped belts such as are commonly used on motorcycles, and to center the belt before it is cut and punched said frame having a threaded aperture at the top through which a threaded hollow spindle l) passes and which is provided at its upper end with a handle c. rIhe lower end of the spindle is provided with a punch (Z of a size corresponding to the hole to be punched in the belt. On the front of the frame are two grooves a2 formed in any suitable manner, one at each side of the frame, and in which slides a knife e connected with the spindle by a collar c t-o provide for the rising and falling of the knife together with the spindle and the punch.
In the forms of the invention shown, the frame a is surmounted by a boss a through which passes the spindle provided with a handle c and a punch (Z. The knife e which works in the end grooves a2 of the frame t and is provided at its upper end with a collar c which fits an annular' groove in the top portion of the spindle l).
In Figs. l and 2 the combined belt cutter and punch is shown cutting a portion of belt, g.
The upper part of the punch Z is provided with a shoulder f so that when desired a steel sleeve may be put on the punch (Z before perforating the belt in order 'to let it remain in the hole when punched and so form a lining.
In carrying out the operation of cutting and pun-ching a. motor cycle belt the end thereof is introduced into the frame of the apparatus and by turning the handle c to the right the knife and punch are caused to descend and sever and punch the belt simultaneously.
Vvlhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A combined cutter and punch for belts comprising a four sided frame with sides tapering toward their lower ends, a screw punch, and a cutter blade sliding in the end of said frame and operatively connected to move simultaneously with the punch whereby the belt is centered, cut and punched in one operation.
2. A combined belt cutter and punch comprising a rectangular frame having a boss on its upper member provided with a screw threaded bore, the lower member of said frame having an aperture therein register'- ing with the bore in said boss to form a seat for the punch, a punch having a screw threaded shank mounted in said bore, the side members of said frame having longitudinally arranged grooves in their inner faces, a knife slidably mounted in said grooves and haring a laterally extending arm engaging with the shank of said punch, and a handle on said punch.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES JESSE ROWE. vWitnesses J. WV. MACKENZIE, l). A. NUTLEY.
