To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. Kimus, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Jet Regulators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in my object being to provide a device which when placed within the tube through which the supply of gas passes, may be adjusted to regulate the size of the blaze or jet without throttling the supply or adjusting a cutoff valve for the purpose.
The main feature of my improved construction consists of a tube vertically disposed in the body of the burner, and whose upper extremity tapers inwardly and is slotted to form a numberv of yielding members, whereby when the tube is moved vertically with relation to a dome-shaped device surrounding the same and provided with a central opening, the spring members may be caused to approach each other, thus diminishing the cross sectional area of the gas exit. The outer portions of these spring members extend vertically for a short distance from their upper ends, whereby they are adapted to protrude through the opening of the said dome, thus making it practicable, by the vertical adjustment of the dome or the regulating tube or both, as the case may be, to control the jet of gas issuing from the opening in the dome within a considerable range.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a gas burner equipped with my improved regulating device. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the regulating device proper, or a view looking in the direction of arrow 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a snnilar view showing the parts in different relative positions, the dome being adjusted in this view to bring the vertical points of the regulating tube nearer together. Fig. 4 is a detail View of one form of the regulating tube or tip. Fig. 5 rs a vertical longitudinal section similar to Fig. 1, showing, however, a slightly modified form of construction. Fig. 0 is a detail view of the form of regulating tube illustrated in Fig. 5.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Referring first more especially to Figs. 1 to l inclusive, let the numeral 5 designate a casing in which is inserted a valve plug 6 held in place by a coupling sleeve 7 threaded on the lower extremity of the casing and having an inwardly extending flange 8 adapted to engage a shoulder 9 formed on the valve member, whereby the latter is supported in operative relation with the casing and a conduit 10 through which the gas supply passes to the burner. This conduit as illustrated in the drawing is elbow-shaped and formed integral with the casing 5. The screw sleeve? is split on one side and provided with apertured lugs 12 adapted to receive a screw 12 whereby the sleeve may be caused to clamp the casing to which it is applied more or less tightly as may be desired. The valve piece 6 is slightly coneshaped and fits within the counterpart opening formed in the casing 5, whereby as the valve piece becomes worn the screw sleeve may be adjusted to raise the valve and cause it to maintain a tight fit. In the drawing, however, the screw sleeve is shown at its limit of forward movement on the casing.
There is a passage 13 extending laterally through the horizontal member of the elbow 10 and through the wall of the casing with which the said elbow is formed integral as heretofore explained. This passage is arranged to register-with a port let formed in the valve piece when the valve is adjusted to allow the gas to enter the burner. As illustrated in the drawing the valve piece is provided with a central recess 15 for the initial entrance of the gas. In the form of construction shown in the said views, the casing is open above the valve as shown at 16. The upper extremity of the casing is reduced in size as shown at 17, and exteriorly threaded as shown at 18, to correspond. with the interiorly threaded lower portion 19 of the dome 20, the latter being provided with a central opening 21 at its upper extremity. This dome is provided with an exteriorly toothed zone 22 to enable it to be readily rotated by hand, by simply passing the thumb and finger through openings 23 formed in the hood 24., which has reduced portions 25 and 26 at the top and bottom, its central portion 27 being enlarged, forming a relatively large chamber immediately surrounding the jet regulator; the openings 23 also serving to admit air freely to support combustion. The lower reduced part 26 of the hood rests upon a shoulder 28 formed on the. casing 5.
I My improved gas-jetmegulating tube 29 is inserted in the reduced upper extremity 17 of the casing and rests upon a shoulder 30 of the casing at the bottom of said reduced part 17. The lower part 31 of this tube is cylindrical in shape and fits closely within the opening of the casing part 17. The upper portion of the tube 29 is slotted as shown at 32 forming the tube into a number of yielding members 33, which taper inwardly as shown at 3% near the top of the tube, while their upper extremities 35 occupy a vertical position, whereby they are adapted to protrude through the opening 21 of the adjustable dome 20-, and as the dome is moved downwardly, these members are compressed and their vertical extremities may be brought nearly in contact with each other, thus making it practicable to reduce the size of the issuing gas jet to a minimum degree without completely cutting off the same. This is an important improvement over regulating tubes whose spring members are entirely confined within an outer tube, and in which the vertical points which protrude through the opening 21 are lacking.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the regulating tube is designated 36. In this form of construction the upper portion of'the said tube is substantially the same as shown in the other views, the tube having the slots 36, the inwardly curved parts 34, and the vertical points 35, protruding through the opening 21 of the adjustable dome 20. This tube 36, however, extends downwardly into the chamber 16 above the valve piece 6, its lower extremity being closed as shown at 37, while above this closure inlet orifices 38 are formed to allow the gas to pass to the interior of the tube. The lower closed end 37 of this tube is provided wth an interiorly threaded opening 39 in which is threaded the upper extremity of a rod a0. To this rod immediately below the closed end of the tube 36 is applied a lock nut 41. This rod 40 passes through the center of the valve piece 6, the latter being provided with a threaded opening 42 for the purpose. that the adjustment of this form of construction, necessary for compressing the vertical points 35 for the purpose of diminishing the gas-exit opening through the top of the dome 20, as well as for releasing the said points to enlarge the gas-jet-issuing opening, may be accomplished either by turning the dome 20 upon the reduced threaded upper portion 17 of the casing or by turning the rod 40, since the lower extremity of the latter is exposed and equipped with a head 43 in which is formed a nick to receive ascrew driver.

In this case, however, the rod 40 together with the regulating tube turn with the valve, but'their relations to the other parts of the mechanism are not changed as will be readily understood, since the regu-' lating tube and valve are coaxiallv arranged. In each form of construction the valve is provided with a stop pin 45 threaded into the valve piece and protruding into the lower slotted portion of the casing, the edges of the casing on opposite sides of the slot serving to limit the movement of the valve piece when thesame is turned for the purpose of turning the gas out or cutting it 05.
