RAILWAY-TIE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL H. Wm'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates broadly to the class of railways ties.
The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of simple and etlicient means whereby the tie body is thoroughly and evenly braced throughout its entire length, both longitudinally and laterally; that portion directly beneath the rail seat or rail engaging surface being additionally braced for the purpose of eliminating the objectionable features found in the ties as at present constructed.
A further object of my invention contemplates the provision of novel and specially devised fastening means; one portion of which is formed lntegrally with the tie, and the other portion mounted thereupon, the cooperation of the two adapted to retain and fasten the rail properly upon the tie without the use of spikes, bolts or other such independent fastening elements.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railway tie constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tie. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein is illustrated the presferred form of my invention the numeral. 1 designates the tie body portion, preferably rectangular in cross section and composed of metal, concrete, cement or other suitable material. A longitudinally extending brace 2 is formedintegrally with and upon the under face of the tie, the extremities of the brace increasing in size toward Specification of Letters Patent.

the ends thereof where they merge into laterally extending braces 3. These lateral braces 3 are positioned directly beneath the rail. bearing surface of the tie, the thickness of each brace being reduced or tapered as at 4 toward the edge of the tie. Additional braces 5, in reality a continuation of the longitudinal brace 2 are provided upon each end of the tie, the outer face of the said brace 5 tapering as at 6 toward the laterally extending braces 3. For the purpose of decreasing Or reducing the cost of manufacture as well as the amount of material used in constructing the tie, the longitudinal brace 2 is arched as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
A rail fastening member 7 is formed integrally with and upon the upper face of the tie body 1, said member being provided with a tongue 8 adapted to overlap the rail base for fastening the rail upon the tie. A second rail fastening member 9 likewise provided with a tongue 10 is detachably mounted upon the upper face of the rail tie adjacent the said first mentioned member 7 this member however being provided with a dovetail key or projection 11 adapted to engage or fit within a dove-tail groove 12 provided upon the upper face of the tie, thus preventing vertical movement of the fastening member independent of the tie. A bolt or screw 13 of any convenient size extends through the said member 9 and into the tie body 1 for the purpose of preventing latcral or sliding movement of the said member, the tongue 10 having been previously fitted over the rail base upon the opposite side thereof from that of the tongue 8.
In fastening the rail upon the tie one side of the base portion thereof is fitted beneath the tongue 8 of the fastening memher 7, whereupon the projection 11 of the other fastening member 9 is fitted and slid within a dove-tail groove 12 until the tongue 10 engages the opposite side of the rail thereby holding the same securely and preventing vertical movement of the same independent of the tie.
By embedding the laterally and longitudinally extending braces within the roadbed, movement of the tie body is prevented and sagging or drooping of one end of the tie is rendered less likely by reason of the braces herein mentioned.
It will be seen from the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the simplicity of construction Will make it possible to manufacture the tie at a minimum cost; that the manner in which the rails are secured in pro-per place is not only simple but highly efficient and reliable in operation; and that the provision of the dove-tail connection. betiveen the projections of the fasteningmember and the tie renders vertical movement of the former impossible.
It: is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my ihvention Will be readily comprehended.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts provided such changes fall Within the scope of the subjoined claim;
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
A railway tie including a body portion substantially rectangular in cross section, a longitudinally extending centrally disposed gaging siirfac'e of the tie and formed to de-' pend from the body at a slight outward inclination, the lateral faces of the said lateral braccs being tapered from the longitudinal brace to point upon the same plane as the side of the said body; end braces formed from a continuation of the said lengitudinal brace, the outer faces of the said end braces being tapered from a point near the top thereof and means formed upon the rail engaging surface of the tie for fasten- 7 ing the rail thereto, as and for the purpose set forth;
