To (HZ whom i may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. E. GOULD, a citizen oi the UnitcdStates, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invex'ltion relates to improvements in sewing machines, and has for one of its principal objects the provision of means whereby the sleeves, legs, and circular portions of garments can be conveniently placed on the machine and manipulated, so as to be readily stitched thereby as desired, and also, that the machincmay be used for ordinary or plain sewing.
A second ObJQCt of my invention is the provision of an oil proof casing for the lower operating parts and of means to pre- 'ent the spilling of oil it the casing is turned over on one side.
A third object of my invention is to improve and simplify the mechanism for operating the feeding device of the machine and .to improve the method of changing the feed.
A fourth object is to improve and simplify the means for retaining the shuttle in a retary hook or holder whereby the shuttle may be more readily inspect-ed, inserted, and removed, while being held securely in place during operation.
A fifth object of the invention is to pro vide means whereby the mechanism for operating the feeding device and the bobbincase ma he more conveniently inspected and access thereto easily had.

In the accompanying drawings which serve to illustrate the invention Figure l, is a front elevation of a sewing machine embodying the improvements. Fig. 2, is a side elevation taken from the left of Fig. 1, the upper part being broken away and part being sectioned on line 22, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is plan view or" a portion of' Fig. 1, parts being removed and parts being broken away. Fig. l, is a plan view of Fig. 1, with the central cover plate removed. Fig. 5, is a'sectional viewv on the line 55, of Fig. 1, parts being broken and the interior mechanism being-removed. Fig. 12, is an eleva tional View partly in section of the parts shown in Fig. 10, and Fig. 13, is a View taken from the same position as Fig. 12, but with the cap piece removed and the gate swung outward as when removing or inserting a bobbin and the case therefor.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 1, is a base plate made integral with thewell 2, and the trough or case 3. Mounted on the plate 1, is a casting 4, which supports the driving wheeland the needle operating mechanism. However, my invention does not relate in any way to parts supported by or carried with the casting l, except as to the feed regulating device described below which lies partly within this casting. It is obvious however, that I intend to drive the wheel 5, b a belt inthe usual manner.'; As shown in ig. 4, I employ a connecting rod 6, within the castin 4. This rod 6, trans mits the motion of the shaft (not shown) of the wheel 5, to a crank 7, attached to the in- .ner or right hand end of a shaft 8, which runs through the length of the trough 3. At the outer or left hand end of thetrough 3, is a rotary hook 9, carried and driven by the shaft 8. A bobbin-case 19, is shown in place within the hook in Figs. 10, and. 12, but is omitted in Fig. 13. The particular bobbin case and ,bobbin mechanism shown are not my invention. At the left of the hook, however, is my improved gate structure 11, for holding the bobbin-case in the hook. This ate may be used in conjunction with any term of rotary machine having a bobbincase. As shown oartieularly in Fig. 10, the trough 3, has a vie its left hand 'or/o ter end.
