1 b all 10710122 it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn Gnamssnr, a subject of the Czar of Russia. residing at New Alexandria, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to screens, and the imary object of my invention is to furnish window frame with a screen roller having screen that is attached to a sash. whereby when the sash is raised the screen is placed in position to prevent flies and other insects from entering an apartment provided with a screen in accordance with this invention.

Another object of this invention is to provide a telescopic or extensible housing ha v ing a screen roller that can be applied to window frames of various widths.

A further object of this invention is to provide a screen for windows that can be permanently located in a frame, the screen and the housing thereof being simple in construction, easy to install and manipulate and highly eflicient for the purposes for which they are intended.

Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l isa perspective VIQW of a portion of a window frame provided with a screen roller housing, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a stile supporting one end of a. screen roller, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same, Fig. 4 is a plan of the screen roller and the housing thereof, Fig. 5 is another cross sectional view of the screen roller and the housing thereof, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the housing.

Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout? 1 denotes longitudinallyalining channelshaped memhere. that are made of metal and the outer ends of said members are flanged, as at 2 to form sockets for the lower ends of stiles 3, said stiles having the confronting sides thereof provided with longitudinal grooves 4-. The walls of the grooves 4, at the lower ends thereof are recessed, as at 5 in order to provide clearance for the ends of the screen roller which will be hereinafter specificallv described. M

The members 1 for the greater part of their length, particularly at the inner ends thereof have the side walls thereof slitted, as at 6 and bent inwardly to form a housing. The confronting ends of the members are connected by an intermediate adjustable channel member 7 that has the inwardly bent edges thereof slidable against the inwardly bent edges of the members 1.

The member 7 has apertured lateral lugs 8 and after the members 1 and 7 have been adj usted for a prescribed size of window frame, the lugs S can be secured to the sill of the frame to prevent said members from becoming accidentally displaced. The intermediate member also has a bracket 9 that facilitates adjusting said member relatively to the members 1 and the bracket 9 can be secured to a portionof a window frame to cooperate with the lugs 8 in locking the member 7 in adjusted position.

The lower ends of the stiles 3 are provided with bearings 10 for the pintles ll of the screen roller 19, said roller being constructed upon the same principle as a spring curtain shade roller, that is, whereby the screen 13' of said roller will be normally wound thereon. The longitudinal edges of the screen 13 are movable within the grooves 4 and said screen is secured, as at 14 to the lower rail of a sash 15, that is movable between said stiles. As the sash 15 is raised and lowered the screen 13 is unwound and wound upon the roller and when the screen is not in use the roller holding the same is housed by the members 1 and 7.

What I claim is In a screen for windows, longitudinally grooved stiles, a sash movable between said stiles,longitudinally alining channel-shaped members at the lower ends of said stiles and having sockets to receive the lower ends of said stiles, an intermediate channel-shaped member connecting the first mentioned members, beatings carried by the "lower ends of said stiles, a spring screen roller supported by said bearings, and a screen Wound'upon said roller and attached to said sash and capable of winding and unwinding upon said roller as said sash is lowered and raised between said stiles.
