ALBERT LOEST, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA.
BULB-SHIELD AND OPERATING MEANS THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 27, 1911.
Patented Feb. 10,1914.
Serial No. 668,159.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT LoEs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bulb-Shields and Operating Means Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for operating and protecting bulbs for horns and the like and has for its objects to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of such devices.
Vith this object in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of the parts of such devices, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form which my invention may take.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the protecting casing, showing the manner of mounting a bulb therein and connecting a horn to said bulb. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view as seen on line 22, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an elevation, having a portion thereof broken away, of a portion of the protecting casing and bulb.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 is the lower part of my improved two part casing, which is provided at its lower end with transversely extending apertured ears 2, it being understood that screws may be positioned through the apertures in said ears to secure the protecting casing in any position. The operating bulb 3 of a vehicle horn is adapted to be positioned in said casing and extend a distance above said part 1. The bulb 3 is adapted to be secured to the operating portion of a horn 4 or may be secured to a flexible tubing as often employed to connect the operating bulb to a horn, it being understood that a suitable reed 5 is positioned between said operating bulb and the horn. The upper edge of the part 1 is exteriorly screw threaded and adapted to be engaged by the interiorly screw threaded part 6, which is of such a form as to closely 5 engage the upper portion of the operating bulb 3. The part 6 is preferably provided at its central portion with an enlarged portion 7, which is provided with a bore 8 therein, through which is adapted to extend a stem 9. The stem 9 is provided with an enlarged flange 10 at its lower end and with an operating button 11 at its upper end. The upper surface of the enlarged flange 10 is curved to conform to the inner surface of the part 6.
As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the bulb 8 is of the proper size to-fit snugly within the casing and to normally retain the enlarged flange 10 in engagement with the casing, whereby objectionable rattling and moving of the stem 9 is prevented. The part 6 of the casing adjacent the enlarged portion 7 is provided with openings which are adapted to be closed by the enlarged flange 10,. when the latter is in raised position.
When it is desired to give a signal with the horn, the operating button 11 is depressed so that the flange 10 will operate the bulb 3. This results in expelling the air from said bulb so that the horn will be sounded. Upon releasing the operating button the resiliency of the bulb will return the flange to its upper position so that the bulb may again be operated when desired to give an additional signal. It will be understood that the upper portion of the part 6 of the casing adjacent the enlarged portion 7 is provided with one or more openings 12 for the admission of air when the bulb is operated and for the escape of air when the bulb resumes its normal shape after being operated.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided an inclosing casing for a bulb, which, when left inoperative, forms a seal about the bulb and protects the same from the deteriorating effects of the elements. It will also be seen that the protecting casing may be readily removed when it is desired to renew or repair the operating bulb, and, it will also be seen that my protecting casing is of very cheap construction, which may be readily secured in place about the usual form of bulb.
While I have shown the preferred form which my invention may take, I desire it to be understood that I may make certain modifications therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new is:
A device of the character described comprising a two part ovate casing, one of said parts being provided With means for securing it upon a suitable support and having an axial opening in its extremity and the second part being threaded upon the first named part and having an axial openingiin its extremity and additional openings adjacent to said axial opening, a bulb snugly fitting in the two part casing When expanded having an opening registering With the opening of the first named part of the casing, a stem slidable in the axial opening of the" second named part of the casing, a flanged head on the inner end of said stem Copies of this patent may be obtained for shaped to lie snugly against the inner surface of the second named part of the casing and close the additional openings therein when pressed outward by the expansion of the bulb, and a pressbutton on the outer end of the stem.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALBERT LOEST.
