Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 9, 1918. Serial No. 766,615.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Win/[Brian citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the ,county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Knockdown Stoves, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to portable, knock-- down or collapsible stoves, the stove being especially designed with reference to the needs of campers, prospectors, outing and automobile parties and the like, the objectin view being to produce a stove of the knock-down variety which will embody practical utility, lightness and durability and be capable of production at a reasonable cost.

A further object of the invention is to provide a stove of the knock-down variety which, when all the parts thereof are assembled in proper relation to each other will be effectively braced, the said stove embodying means providing for an adjustment of the draft whereby the fire may be accurately regulated and taken care of.

The stove as a vwhole will be found especially valuable in preventing forest fires, there being no escape for the burning embers. J

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stove of this invention set up in readiness for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section thereof showing the spreader rod in its relation to the other parts of the stove. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the stove showing the door, the draft opening, and the closure for said opening. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the main section folded. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the door section folded. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the flue wall section folded.

The stove contemplated in this invention is composed in the main of sheet metal as 1 designates the top of the stove which is provided with any suitable number of stove holes 2 according to the size of the stove it being understood that the stove as a whole may be made in various sizes to suit the manufacturer.

The sides 3' which, like the top 1 are 'of sheet metal, are'connected at their top edges by knuckle joints 4 to the opposite longitudlnal edges of the top 1, whereby the sides are adapted to be setat right angles to the the reduced and shouldered ends of a .ties of the rod bearing against the inner surfaces of the sides so as to hold the same spread apart as shown in Fig. 3. The extremities of the rod project outside of and beyond the sides 3 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.

The stove also embodies the front end wall 10 and the rear end or the flue wall 11. The front wall 10 is provided at its opposite edges with side flaps 12 which are hinged to the front wall at 13, adapting the said flaps to be folded flat-wise against the front Wall or swung outwardly to a position at right angles to the front wall so as to embrace the sides 3 of the main section of the stove. The flaps 12 are provided in their bottom edges adjacent to the hinges 13 with notches 14 which provide shoulders 15. The notches 14 enable the flaps 12 to set over the projecting extremities of the spreader rod 7 while the shoulders 15 engage said extremities of the rod and serve to lock the flaps and thereby the front wall 10 to the main section of the stove. The front wall 10 is provided with a door opening 16 and a hinged door 17, and the latter is provided with a draft I opening 18 and a closure 18' therefor to pro vide for regulating draft through the body of the stove. The other end wall 11 is correspondingly provided with side flaps 19 adapted 'to embrace the sides 3 of the stove at that end, said flaps being hinged to the wall 11 as shown at 20 to adapt them to be folded flat-wise against the wall 11. The wall 11 is set at a suitable distance from the corresponding end of the top 1 and sides 3 to leave a draft opening as shown in Fig. 1 which draft opening. is protected by the combined flue wall and fender or wind shield 21. The closure 18 is then opened to the desired extent to provide the necessary draft through the stove from end to en When the stove is not in use, the several parts thereof referred to are disconnected and the hinged sides and flaps referred to are folded flat-wise against their respective members and the sections of the stove are piled one upon another, forming a compact bundle which may be easily and conveniently stored and transported until required for further use.

If desired the front wall 10 may be provided along its top edge with aninwardly extending flange 22 adapted to rest on the top- 1 of the stove. Furthermore the top 1 and sides 3 may be reinforced by means of braces -23 preferably riveted or otherwise fixedly secured to the inner surfaces of the said parts.

What is claimed is:-

1. A portable sheet metal knock-down stove comprising a top, two sides having a knuckle jointed connection therewith adapting the sides to be folded flat-wise against the top, a spreader rod extending transversely and horizontally across the stove and having its ends reduced and shouldered to pass through holes near the bottom edges of the sides and project outside of the same, and separable end walls each provided with side flaps hinged thereto and adapted to embrace the sides of the stove, the flaps of one end wall being formed with shoulders which interlock with the projecting extremities of the spreader. rod.

2. A portable sheet metal knock-down stove comprising a top, two sides having a knuckle jointed connection therewith adapting the sides to be folded flat-wise against the top, the top bein provided with stop shoulders to limit t e outward opening movement of the sides, a spreader rod extending transversely and horizontally across the stove and having its ends reduced and shouldered to pass through holes near the bottom edges of the sides and project outside of the same, and separable end walls each provided with side flaps hinged thereto and adapted to embrace the sides of the stove, the flaps of one end wall being formed with shoulders which interlockwith the projecting extremities of the spreader rod.

3. A portable sheet metal knock-down stove comprising a top, two sides having a knuckle jointed connection therewith adapting the sides to be folded flat-wise against the top, a spreader rod extending transversely and horizontally across the stove and having its ends reduced and shouldered to pass through holes near the bottom edges of the sides and project outside of the same, and separable end walls each provided with side flaps hinged thereto and adapted to embrace the sides'of the stove, one end wall being slidablerelatively to the remainder of the stove and being extended above the top of the stove to form a combined draft flue wall and fender.

4. A portable sheet metal knock-down stove comprising a top, two sides having a knuckle jointed connection therewith adapting the sides to be folded flat-wise against the top, a spreadcd' rod extending transversely and horizontally across the stove and having its ends reduced and shouldered to pass through holes near the bottom edges of the sides and project outside of the same, separable end Walls each provided with side flaps hinged thereto and adapted to embrace the sides of the stove, the flaps of one end wall being formed with shoulders which interlock with the projecting extremities of the spreader rod, the other end wall being provided with a draft inlet opening, and a damper for closing said opening.
