CAR-C OUPLIN G.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MCKERA- I-IAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilmerding, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Coupler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to car couplers, and it has for its object to provide one with a block for locking a tail piece of the knuckle, there being a lever one arm of which is adapted to be engaged by the block, the block on the other arm of the lever engaging the cam surfaces of the tail piece to operate the knuckle as the block is raised or lowered. Means is provided for raising or lowering the block from the side of the car.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of ref# erence indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement with the knuckle in lock position; Fig. 2 is a similar View with the knuckle in open position; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the knuckle; Fig. 4L is a sectional elevation showing' the block engaging the tail piece to lock the knuckle in closed position; Fig. 5 in a similar view but with the block raised and the tail piece disposed under the block in the position it assumes when the knuckle is open; Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view of the device; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modied form of the block and its arm.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that in the head 5 there is an opening 6, in which the knuckle 7 is pivoted, this knuckle 7 having a tail piece 8, with cam surfaces 9 and 10. At the bottom of the tail piece 8 there is a roller bearing 11, which rides on the surface of the head 5, at the bottom of the opening 6. In the opening 6 there is a pivoted lever 12 having a depending arm 13, which engages the cam surface 9 of the tail piece 8, the other arm 14 of the lever 12, being disposed over the locking.
block 15. This locking block 15 is integral with an arm 16, which has trunnions 17, which are freely disposed in bearings 18 in the draw bar 19. On the bottom of this locking block 15 there is a lug 20, which is Specification of Letters Patent.

adapted to travel on the cam surface 10 of the tail piece 8. In the locking block 16 there is an opening` 21 in which are disposed the ears 22, which project laterally from the vertical rod 23, this vertical rod being disposed through openings 21, which extend through the top and bottom of the locking block. The lower terminal. of the vertical rod 23 projects through an opening 25 in the head. To the upper terminal of this vertical rod 23 there is secured a cap plate 26, which is adapted to cover the opening 27 in the top of the 'head through which-the verh A .horizontally disposed rock shaft 28 is mounted in bearings 29 on the car 30. An arm 31 projects from this rock shaft 28, this arm 31 being connected with the plate 26 by a link 32.
In using the invention it will be understood that when the knuckle 7 is open, and as shown in 2 of the drawings, when it is engaged by a similar knuckle on another car, the tail piece 8 will be pushed inwardly to permit the block 15 to be disposed between the end of the tail piece and the wall of the head 5, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The knuckle 7 will be locked in this position by the block.
To open the knuckle 7 the rock shaft 28 is rotated to raise the link 32, and the ver tical rod 23, thereby moving upwardly the block 15, the block 15 engaging the arm 14 of the lever 12, thereby rocking the lever so that the depending arm 13 will engage the cam surface 9 on the tail piece 8 of the knuckle. The further movement of the block 15 will cause the depending arm 13 t0 press on the cam surface 9 to move the 15, thereby opening the knuckle. To close the knuckle from the side of the car the shaft 28 is rocked in the opposite direction, which forces the vertical rod 23 down by the link 32, this causing the lug 20 on the block 15 to press against the cam surface 10 thereby pressing the tail piece 8 rearwardly Until it is disposed at the side of the block 15, the block 15 then descending at the side of the tail piece 8 to prevent the tail pice from moving forwardly, thereby locking the knuckle 7.
In Fig. 7 I show a modified form of the block, this block being designated 15a, and having a roller member 15", which is profor riding on the cam surface 10 of the tail piece 8.
In the vertical rod 23 there is a recess 23a,
which when desired, may be disposed against the head 5 at the bottom of the opening 6 by an abnormally rearward movement of the top of the rod 23, this rod 23 being pivoted to the block 15 by the ears 22.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a car coupler, a head with an opening, a knuckle having a tail piece and pivoted in the opening in the head, the tail piece having a top with two cam surfaces disposed side by side, one of the cam sui'- faces extending in one direction downwardly and outwardly from a central point, and the other cam surface extending downwardly and outwardly in the opposite direction from the said point, a lever having an arin for engaging one of the cain surfaces on the tail piece, and a locking block for engaging the other cam surface on the tail piece, for moving the knuckle in one direction when the block is moved in one direction, and also naine to this specification in the presence of `two subscribing witnesses.
for engaging the other arm of the lever for moving the knuckle in the opposite direction when the block is moved in ano-ther direction.V
2. In a car coupler a head having an opening with a side wall, a pivoted knuckle Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the having a tail piece, the tail piece being disposed in the opening and having a top with cam surfaces thereon, a locking block resting on the cam surfaces of the tail piece when the car coupler is open and being adapted to be pressed down to move the knuckle away from the side wall to permit the locking block to be disposed between the tail piece land the side wall, a lever having an arm for engaging a cani surface on the locking block, and another arm disposed in the path of the locking block to be moved thereby, the tail piece being held in open position, and
.the locking block being supported at the top of the cani surface on the tail piece of the lever by the pressure of the locking block against the lever and the pressure of the lever against the cam surface, a horizontal rock shaft having a radially extending arm, and means for connecting the arm with the locking block for pressing the locking block down.
In testimony whereof I have signed my CHARLES ARTHUR MGKERAHAN Witnesses:
