DRIVING MECHANISM FOR MOVABLE SHEET-FEEDING GUIDES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GnoRe Srmss, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, and a resident of Leipzig-Anger-Crottendorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism for Movable Sheet- Feeding Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel drive nechanism for movable sheet feeding guideson printing presses, foldingand assorting machines.
In printing presses, foldingand assorting machines and the like it is highly important that the fed paper sheets assume a very exact location one upon the other. This is attained by means of so called sheet feeding guides which may be constructed as pushing or pulling guides. The horizontal motion of such guides is usually derived from a rotating part of the machine which requires a transmission of the motion of 90.
According to the present invention this is accomplished by transferring the mo tion by means of a swing arm or lever whose bifurcated end portion embraces partly a ball-shaped guiding device of a free arm which is part of an adjustable lever that causes the dislocation of rods which carry the sheet feeding guides.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing showing one form of the invention in which:
Figure 1 represents in elevation a drive device for sheet feeding guides on printing presses and the like embodying in desirable form the present improvements. Fig. 2 illustrates in top plan view the feed table with the sheet feeding guides. Fig. 3 shows in side elevation the bifurcated lever arrangement. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a pull ing sheet feeding guide, and Fig. 5 is a side view of same.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
In the device illustrated the sheets are fed to a pile A which forms upon the downwardly moving table B. The pushing sheet feeding guides C and D are secured to the rods E and F and simultaneously moved from both sides against and away from the edges of the new sheet which has just been fed onto the pile. The rods E and F are held against the arms of a two-armed lever I by virtue of the action of the springs G and H; said two-armed lever I resting then Specification of Letters Patent.

with its two ends against the ends of the rods E and F.
- In order to render it possible to impart the swinging motion to the swing lever I permits of such transmission without any friction. By the movement of the lever I in one direction the sheet feeding guides C and D are moved against the edges of the sheet, by the motion of same in the other direction the sheet feeding guides are pulled back therefrom.
In place of the pushing sheet feeding guides pulling guides may be employed for feeding the sheets as for instance shown in Figs. 4 and of the drawing. The pulling sheet feeding uide is mounted upon a block Qwhich is held on the rod E by means of a screw. The block Q is formed in shape of a wrench so that it may be shifted over the rod E lengthwise and may also be removed. The lower jaw It of the mouth of this pulling guide is rigidly connected to the block Q and the upper aw S articulated to an arm T. In order to keep the mouth in an open position the elongated part of said upper jaw has an extension U into which a stop tooth W may enter which stop tooth or catch also is articulated to the arm T. If the mouth is to be closed after one sheet has entered, the stop tooth or catch is lifted off by means of an impact against an arm V that is mounted with the stop tooth or catch on the same aXle whereupon the upper jaw which is set free is closed by its own weight or by the action of a spring. Upon further operation of the device, the rod E is again actuated, whereby the stop tooth IV renters the extension U of the elongated part of the upper jaw and thus opens the mouth.
I claim as my invention:
1. Drive mechanism for movable sheet feeding guides on printing presses, folding and sorting machines and the like, comprising a cam operated bifurcated swing arm,
0 guided in a ball shaped guide in the fork of said arm, a free arm secured to said ball shaped guide, a two-armed lever connected to the second end of said free arm, two parallel rods mounted above the pile to be formed having two ends in contact with said lever, and two sheet feeding guides one on each rod and oscillated thereby, and means in connection with the opposite ends of said rods for keeping the latter in contact with the ends of the two armed lever.
2. Drive mechanism for movable sheet feeding guides on printing presses, folding and sorting machines and the like, comprising a cam operated bifurcated swing arm, a ball shaped guide in the fork of said arm, a free arm secured to said ball shaped guide, a two-armed lever connected to the second end of said tree arm, two parallel rods mounted above the pile to be formed having two ends in contact with said lever, and two sheet feeding guides one on each rod and oscillated thereby, and two springs one in connection with one opposite end of a rod for keeping the rods in contact with the 7 ends of the two-armed lever.
3. Drive mechanism for movable sheet feeding guides on printing presses, folding and sorting machines and the like, comprising two parallel rods mounted above the pile to be formed, two sheet feeding guides one on each rod, a cam operated bifurcated arm, a ball shaped guide in the fork of said arm, a free arm on said ball shaped guide, a two armed lever connected to the second end of said free arm and normally in contact with the ends of the rods, springs on each rod normally pressing the rod ends against the ends of the two-armed lever, s0 arranged that the't-wo-armed lever receives an oscillating motion by the cam arrangement whereby one rod and guide is pushed forward while the pther rod and guide moves in the other direction by means of the spring connected therewith.
