B. E. JENGSA. NURSING NIPPLE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 23, 1912.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIZABETH E. JENCSA, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
NURSING-NIPPLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH E. JENOsA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursing- Nipples, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to nursing nipples which are adapted to be applied to the breast of the mother when nursing the infant.
The object of the invention is to provide a nursing nipple, which is to be applied to the breast of the mother when nursing the infant, when the condition of the breast is such that the infant may not nurse directly thereon, of a simple and improved construc tion simulating the form and characteristics of the mothers breast.
Another object of the invention is to provide a nursing nipple or breast shield of the class described which is adapted to be held in place upon the breast by the suction produced by the infant.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the preferred embodiment of the nipple of my invention, the same being shown in vertical section.
The improved nipple of my invention comprises a nipple portion 2 of the proper size and shape, provided with an aperture 3 to allow the passage of fluid therethrough.
The entire nipple is made of soft rubber possessing the desired degree of elasticity or flexibility to simulate the mothers breast. The body portion or elastic breast at of the nipple is broadened out, after the style of the mothers breast, and is made thicker and less flexible than the nipple portion 2, so that it will hold its shape and not collapse under the suction produced by the infant when nursing. This allows a certain re- Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Dec. 23, 1913. Serial No. 699,133.
duction of pressure to be present within the nipple which acts to hold it to the mothers breast.
The body portion I is formed with a flange 5 at the open end terminating in a bead or marginal portion 6. The flange 5 is flat and lies in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the body and extends outward a suflicient distance so that it overlies the breast and contacts therewith and is formed of less thickness and greater flexibility than the bead or the body. These two portions of less flexibility operate to hold the nipple in shape and the intermediate portion of greater flexibility allows such part to readily conform to the contour of the mothers breast and to be held firmly thereto by the suction. By virtue of this construction the nipple is held to the mothers breast without the use of hands or other means, a natural and uniform suction upon the breast is produced and the entrance of air into the nipple except through the aperture 3 is prevented.
I claim:
A nursing nipple formed of flexible rubber, comprising a body portion, a nipple portion having an aperture therein, a broad flat flange arranged perpendicularly to the axis of the body of the nipple formed thereon at the open end, said flange being much thinner and much more flexible than the body of the nipple, and being joined to the body by a thin flexible portion, and a stiffening bead formed on the circumference of said flange.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California, this 17th day of May 1912.
ELIZABETH E. JENCSA.
