BYRON V. CHAPMAN, 0F NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA.
HAT-PIN GUARD.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, BYRON V. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newberry, in the county of Newberry and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a guard for the pointed ends of hat pins.
The invention embodies more particularly a guard for removable connection with the pointed cnd of a hat pin to prevent the protruding end of the hat pin from injuring persons.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a. tubular cap having an open end and a closed end, the said cap being adapted to extend over the pointed end of a hat pin, a locking lug mounted within the cap, the locking lug in the said plate being adapted to be received in the groove in the hat pin to retain the hat pin in locked position with the cap. a spring mounted within the said cap and engaging the said plate for normally retaining the plate in engagement with the hat pin and means for disengaging the said plate from the hat pin to permit of removing the said hat from the said cap.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 .is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my device showing the same applied to a hat pin. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. F ig. 8 is a fragmentary perspective view of the end of the hat pin.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a tubular cap 1() having an open end 11 and a closed end 12 and mounted within the cap 10 is a flexible plate 13 provided with a locking lug lll, the mentioned plate being engaged by a spring 15 mounted within a recess 1G formed in the cap 10 to normally retain the plate 13 in locking position. A pin 17 provided with a knob 18 and bifurcated arms 19, is slidably mounted in the cap 10 with the knob 18 projecting exteriorly of the cap, the free ends of the arms 19 being secured to the plate 13.
The pin-receiving passage of the cap 10 is provided With a continuous lflat wall 10EL Specification of Letters Patent.

which lies parallel with the shank of the pin when the latter is in an applied position. The arrangement of the iiat wall is such that the extremity 11 may be brought to bear wholly against the adjacent surface of said flat wall to permit the plate to bc flexed without undue twisting when pres sure is brought to bear against the pin 17. This facilitates the operation of releasing the lug 141 from the groove 21.
' In the use of my device a hat pin 20 provided with a groove 21 is adapted to receive the cap 10 so that the locking lug 14 thereof will extend into the groove Q1, thus locking the pointed end of the hat pin within the cap 10. To discngage the Cap 10 from the hat pin 20, the pin 17 is pressed inwardly against the action of the spring 15, thus moving the locking lug 14; out of the groove 21 so that the cap can be slid outwardly and disengaged from the hat pin 20.
lVith the device described, the pointed end of the hat pin will be covered by the cap and the locking lug 111 in the groove Q1 will retain the hat pin in locked position within the cap as will be readily understood. The plate 13 is preferably made of a llexible material and thc ends of the plate are conveniently secured within the tubular portion of the cap 10.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
A hat pin point protector comprising a member having a pin receiving passage therein, the said passage having one continuous llat wall, a `flexible plate secured to the member and extending throughout the length of the pin receiving passage and lying parallel with said llat wall and terminating in an outwardly llared portion in the entrance end of the passage, a spring bearing against the plate at the free end thereof and moving the same normally away from said llat wall, and a releasing device carried by the plate and movable through the member and having a portion normally projected beyond the member under the action of said spring.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
