IMPROVED DlTCHlNG-PLOW.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.10,815, dated April '25, 1851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. TIFFANY, of Ooxsackie, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Ditching-Plow and I do hereby declare that the sameis described and represent ed in the following specification and drawings.
The nature of myinvention consists in adding one or more adjustable colters or cutters to the common ditching-plow with a perpendicular plane and colter under the beam, and in adding one or more adjustable elevators with mold board or boards attached, so that by changing the position of the cutters the width of the ditch may be Varied and the elevators may be set to suit the depth of the ditch intendedto be made 5 also, in making and attaching a flexible spreader to the rear of the plow, that may be adjusted so as to remove the earth taken out in forming the ditch from the place where the mold-board leaves it to a proper or the required distance from the edge of the ditch.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use, referring to the before-mentioned drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the plow and spreader. Fig. 2 isa plan of the plow Fig. 3, a plan of the spreader.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the clevis; B,thebeam; G,'thehandles,which may be fastened to the beam as represented or otherwise.
D is a perpendicular plane, to which most of the other parts are either fastened or connected. The lower edge of this plane is hollowed out in the middle, as represented at E, and shod with a bar of metal about twoinches wide its whole length. The object of the hollow E is to lessen the rubbing-surface so as to reduce the friction, so that the plow may be drawn easier than if it were made straight.
The plane D is connected to the beam B by the bolt F, fastened to theplane and passing through the angular mortise G (represented by the dotted lines,) which permits the beam to be adjusted as required and secured by the nut H, which is screwed against the curved plate I, (represented by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) which is let into the top of the beam.
The beam is adjusted by raising or lowering the rear end and fastening it in the position required by the pin J, which passes through the beam and through one of the holes in the plate K, fastened to the plane D as represented or otherwise.
1 construct a double or two-winged share, L, in the form represented, and fasten it to the lower corner of the fore end of the plane D, and fasten the center oolter, M, to it, the upper end of the colter being fastened to the plane D by the strap N, as represented in the drawings. There are two side colters, O 0, one
fastened to each wingof the share L, and their upper ends are fastened into the adjustable slides PP, which slides are provided with slots which correspond with the slots in the adjustable stands Q Q, to which they are fastened by the bolts R It.
The adjustable stands Q Q are fastened to the plane D by the bolt S, which may be put through either of the holes-T T, so asto place the colters in the required position in one direction, and the slots in the slides P P and stands Q Q allow the colters to be adj nsted in the required position in another direction, so as to cut the sides of the ditch at the desired angle.
I make two planes, U U, with mold-boards V V at their rear ends. The position of the bolts X X may be changed in the slotsZ Z, so as to set theplanes U U at a proper height to raisethefurrow and make a deep or shallow ditch, as may he required.
I make a flexible adjustable spreader in the form represented in the drawings, audconnect it to the rear end of the plane D bya chain or otherwise. The arms of this spreader are made wider at the bottom than the top, (see a section in the drawings, Fig. 4,) and each arm ismade in two or more parts and connected by hinge-joints, as represented. One end of a segment of plate metal is fastened to each part of each of the arms a a, and in each of the segments 1) b b b there is a series of holes for the bolts 00, which fasten the segments together in the position required, so as to move the earth taken out of the ditch from where the mold-boards leave it to such a distance from the ditch as is necessary or'may be required. The hingejoints 0 6 allow each arm to conform to any undulations in the surface of the ground, so that the spreader does its work much more perfectly that it would if the arms were stiff.
If it is desirable to put the earth taken from the ditch back again after laying a pipe, or drain of brick or stone, the spreader may be unhitched from the plow and set wide enough to move the earth into the ditch, if it is drawn the wide end forward, by hitching some chains into the rings t 2, provided for that purpose.
I contemplate making two or more holes and grooves in each wing of the share, so as to set the side colters to make ditches of different widths at the bottom; also, that the plow may be worked in the same furrow or ditch as many times as it may be necessary to make it the depth required, and that one of the elevators and colters may be removed so as to deposit the earth on one side of the ditch, in which case a share with one wing may be used, if preferred.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. One or more adjustable colters or cutters, in combination with a permanent colter, and both in combination with one or more adjustable elevators, with a mold-board or mold-boards attached substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
I do not claim any of the parts or devices above enumerated separately or alone, but in combination, and in combination only.
2. The flexible adjustable spreader, Fig. 3, formoving the earth from or returning it to the ditch, as required, substantially as described. 1
3. The flexible adjustable spreader, Fig. 3, in combination with the plow,for the purposes set forth.
4. The devices substantiallysuch as herein described, or their equivalents, for changing the position of the rear end of the beam, in combination with the angular slot and curved plate, substantially as described.
