To on whom it may concern 2 Be it known that I, DARRELL FRANK DYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of-Gook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Sofa-Beds, Lounge-Beds, &70. of which the following is a specification. is invention relates particularly to that type of sofa-bed, or lounge-bed, in which an inner folding bed-frame is normally housed in folded condition beneath the seat of the manner that the bedding may be accommodated in folded condition within the folded bed-frame, so that when the bed-frame is open, or extended, the. bedding will be unfolded, or
spread out, at the same time.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved, durable construction of the character referred to, which can be manufactured at moderate cost.

in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, A represents a frame equipped with a fixedly-supported back A; B, a reversible seat mounted on link-and-lever mechanism B carried by the frame; and C, a folding bed which is mounted on the lower portion of the seat-frame and normally housed beneath the seat.
The frame A may be of any suitable -construction. It preferably is of the knockdown type of construction, comprising ornamental end-standards, or arms, 1, connected by the detachably secured back A. Any preferred form .of detachable connections may be employed, none being illustrated.
The seat B is preferably so mounted that it can be reversed, or inverted," by swinging its front edge rearwardly, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5. The link-and-lever mechanism B (duplicated at the two ends of the seat) comprises a pair of rearwardly and upwardly inclined metal bars 2 fixedly secured to the inner surfaces of the endstandards 1 ofthe main frame, as by means of screws or bolts 2, said bar 2 being equipped near its extremities with inwardly projecting headed studs 3 and 4; a lever 5 pivoted on the stud 3 and having its upper end connected, by a pivot 6, with the endmember of the seat-frame near the lower central portion thereof; a lever 7 having its front end connected by a pivot 8 with the lower portion of the end-member of the seatframe in advance of the pivot 6, as shown in Fig. 5, and having its rear end portion provided with a slot 9 which slidably engages the stud 4:, the rear end of the slot being provided with an enlargement 9 to permit the parts to be assembled or disconnected, at will; and a link 10 havin its rear endconnected by a. pivot 10 wiih the rear end of the lever 7, and having its front end connected by a pivot 10 with the lower end of the lever 5.
The lever 5 is provided with a slot 5 having an offset at its upper nd which-affords a; bearing adapted to res t on the stud 3. The link 10 may be permanently united to the levers 5 and 7 by means of the pivots 10 and 10"; and the levers 5 and 7 may be permanently connected with the seat-frame by meansof the pivots 6 and 8. The seatframe may then be mounted on the bars 2, which are permanently attached to the main frame and carry the studs 3 and 4, by engaging the slots '5 of the levers 5 with the studs 3 and entering the studs 4 through the enlargements 9 of the slots 9.
By means of the link-and-lever mecha nism described, the seat and foldedbed carried by the seat will be supported and suitably controlled to clear the frame while the seat is being inverted by swinging it rearwardly, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5, until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 4. This latter position corresponds with the position shown in Fig. 2, and it will be observed that the seat-frame occupies a lower position when reversed than when upright, so that when the bed is unfolded and elevated in the unfolding operation, it will be disposed at a suitable height from the floor.
The folding-bed C can best be described in the position shown in Fig. 2. It comprises a head-section 11;, an intermediate section 12; and a foot-section 13. The sections 11 and 12 are connected by a spacing-section 14; and the sections 12 and 13 are connected by a spacing-section 15.
The section 11 comprises a rail 11 which extends parallel with the front and back of the main frame, and arms 11 which extend forwardly from the extremities of the rail 11 when the seat is in the inverted position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The arms 11 preferably. comprise angle-bars and may be formed integrally with the rail 11*. The section 12 comprises angle-bars. The section 13 comprises short bars which are connected by pivots 14 and 14 with the extremities of the arms 11 and the adjacent ends of the bars comprising the section 12. The bars comprising the section 14 are connected by a tubular truss-member 14, the extremities of which are joined, by pivots 14, to the central portions of the bars 14. The central portion of thetruss 14 is connected by a spring 14 to the adjacent rail of the seat-frame.
The section 15 comprises short angle-bars which are connected by pivots 15 with the bars 12, and by pivots 15 withthe arms 13 of the section 13. The opposite ends of the arms l3 are joined by a rail 13 which may be termed the foot-rail'of the bed. The bars comprising the section 15 are connected by a truss 15, the ends of which are connected by pivots 15 with the central portions of said bars 15. In the folded condition of the bed, the section 14 serves to space the head-section 11 with respect to the intermediate section 12, as shown in Fig. 4; and the section 15 se'r-ves to space the intermediate section 12 with respect to the foot-section 13, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
A flexible bed-bottom or fabric 16 is stretched upon the folding-frame described, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1.
The bars 14 are fitted with pivot-plates 17 which are joined by pivots 18 to rockingly mounted standards 19, joinedby pivots 20,
to fixed standards, or lugs, 21 attached to the lower rear corners of the seat-frame (appearing at the front upper corners in Fig. 2); and the arms of the section 11 are equipped with studs 22 movable in inclined guide-slots 23 formed in brackets 24 which depend from the central portions of the end-members of the seat-frame. The slots 23 are provided with offsets 23 adapted to form bearings for the studs 22 when the bed is in the extended position, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus, the brackets or hangers 24 serve as standards for the head-section of the bed in the extended condition of the bed. The rocking standards, or hinges, 19 are provided with segmental slots 19 which engage studs 21 with which the fixed brackets 21 are equipped. Thus, the members 19 are capable of a limited swinging motion from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 2. r V
The bed-section 12 is'equipped with legs 25 which are joined by pivots 25 to the bars comprising the section 12. The legs 25 have extensions at their upper ends which are joined by links 26 to pivots or studs 26 with "which the members 19 are provided.
The links 26 serve to automatically fold and unfold the legs 25.
The foot-section 13 is equipped with legs 27 which are joined by pivots 27 to the arms 13 near their junction with the rail 13; The legs 27 have extensions which are joined by the links 28 to the pivots, or studs, 15 which connect the truss 15 with the bars 15. The legs 27 are joined by a rod 29 which is bent to V-shape and has its central portion pivotally connected by a clip 29 -with the foot-rail 13. The lower extremities of the legs 27 are bent inwardly, as indicated at 27 in Fig. 7.
It is desirable to lock the foot-section 13 of the bed to the intermediate section 12 when the parts are in the folded'relation shown in Fig. 3. Accordingly, a pair of latches 30 are employed, WhlCh are connected, by pivots 30, with the arms 13 of the foot-section; and these latches are connected, by links 31, with the pivots l5 carried by the spacing bars 15. When the bed is in the extended position, the latches 30 are held in the lowered or sheathed position, that is parallel with the arms 13 of the bed section 13, while the legs 27 are held in the vertical position by the links 28. When the bedsection 13 is raised fromthe position shown in Fig.2 to'the vertical position, the legs 27 are folded by the links 28, while the latchmembers 30 are thrown, by the links 31, to a position perpendicular to the arms 13". The free end of each latch-member 30 is provided with a notch 32 which is of approximately V-shape and provided at its bottom with an offset 32 adapted to interlockingly engage a locking stud 33 which projects outwardly shown in from the intermediate portion of the corresponding end-bar of the bed-section 12,. as Figs. ,3 and 6. As has been'stated, when the bed-section 13 is moved to the vertical position, the latch-members 30 are projected at right-angles to the arms 13*; and it may be added that when the bed-section 13 is folded over on to the bed-section 12, the latch-members will automatically engage the studs 33, the members springing somewhat so that the offsets 32 will interlock with the studs 33 when the bed-section 13 is forced down upon the bed-section. 12.
The revoluble or invertible seat B is equipped with a combination seat-lock and bed-lock 34 of known form. This comprises a vertical crank-shaft 34 and locking plungel-s 34", the extremities of which are adapted to engage sockets or recesses 35 with which the end-standards of the frame A are provided. This will be clearly understood from Figs. 4 and 8. The vertical rod 34 is provided with a crank-handle 34 which engages the truss of the bed when the bed is in the folded position shown in Fig. 4, thus locking the folded' bed to the seatframe. If the crank handle 34 be turned to an angle of 90 from the position shown in Fig. 4, the folded bed will be unlocked from the seat, while the seat itself will be locked by the plungers 34 to the main frame.
In converting the structure from the sofaform shown in Fig. 5, the seat is revolved rearwardly, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5, until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 4. The handle 34 is then turned to unlock the bed from the seat and at the same time unlock the seat from the main frame; The operator then grasps the truss 15 and ulls the same forwardly and upwardly. This causes the hinge-plates 19 to turn about the pivots 20 on the seat-frame which serves as a support for the folded bed. This movement continues until the opposite ends of the slots 19 come into engagement with the studs 21, after which the bed-section 12 turns. about the pivots 14 until the. bed-section 12 is in alinement with the spacing section '14. The section 14 then, by reason of the character of the joints employed which limit the turning movement of the section 12 with relation to the section 14, is turned about the pivots 18, thus forcing the head bed-section 11 to the elevated position. In the unfolding operation, the le s 25 are automatically unfolded by the links 26. At the end of this movement, the bed-section 13 remains locked to the intermediate section 12, as shown in Fig. 3. The section 13 may be conveniently released from the section 12 by lifting the legs 27 to the position shown in Fig. 6, in which 13 is carried forward, while the links 31 serve to release the latch-members 30 from looking engagement with the studs 33. The
operation the bed-section bed-section- 13 may then be unfolded to the position shown in Fig. 2, during which oper ation the links 31 will fold the latch-members 30 to the horizontal position, while the links 28 will extend the legs 27 at rightangles to the bed-section 13.
In converting from the bed-form shown in Fig. 2 to the sofa-form shown in Fig. 5, the bed-section'13 is folded over on to the bedsection 12 and locked thereto. The two bedsections 13 and 12 are then moved as a unit from the position shown in- Fig. 3- to the position slmown in Fig. 4, after which the locking device 34 is. turned to lock the bedseat. and release the seat from the frame. The seat may then be returned to its upright position. It may be added that while the final folding operation is being performed, that is in folding the bed from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4, the spring 14 tends to draw the hinge-members -19 to the vertical position shown in Fig. 4.
The construction described is durable, the conversion from sofa-form to bed-form and vice versa is effected with facility, and the construction enables the sofa-parts to be properly proportioned and the bed to be disposed at aconvenient height when the structure is in bed-form. The locking device for securing the foot-section to the main intermediate section is simple, durable and secure. The locking device here referred to is illustrated in connection with a sofa-bed of somewhat different form, and is generically claimed in my application No. 780,227, filed on even date herewith.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In asofa-bed, the combination of a frame, an invertible seat mounted thereon, and a folding-bed mounted in the seat, comprising a head-section, a main intermediate section, a foot-section, and spacing sections, standards pivotally connected with the seat and capable of limited movement with relation thereto, and spacing sections between the head section and main intermediate section being pivotally connected with said standards, and supporting means between the seat and head-section adapted to permit the head-section to rise with relation to the seat in the operation of unfolding the bed.
2. In a sofa-bed, the combination with a supporting frame, of brackets attached thereto, standards pivotally connected with said brackets and having lost-motion connection therewith, permitting limited pivotal .movement' of the standards with relation to the supporting frame, and a folding-bed comprising a plurality of foldably-related sections, one section being pivotally connected with said standards, and another section having connections with the supporting frame adapted to support the last-named section when it is elevated with relation to the supporting frame.
3. In a sofa-bed, the combination with a supporting frame, of brackets applied thereto, rocking standards mounted on said brackets and capable of limited rocking movement, brackets mounted on the supporting frame and provided with camgrooves and a folding-bed comprising three main-sections and spacing sections between them, one spacing section bein pivotally mounted on said rocking standar s, studs on the inner main section engagin said cam-- grooves, legs. connected with t e intermediate and the outer main sections, and links serving to automatically extend and fold said legs in the operations of unfolding and folding the bed.
4. In a sofa-bed, the combination with a "main frame and an invertible seat mounted thereon, of brackets at the front upper corners of the reversed seat-frame, rocking standards mounted on said brackets and capable of limited rocking movement, a folding-bed comprising a head-section, a main intermediate section, a foot-section, and spacing sections, the inner spacing sections being mounted on said rocking standards, connections between the head-section and the seat-frame serving to aid in elevating the head-section when the bed is unfolded, legs connected with the main intermediate section and linked to said rocking standards, and legs connected'with the footsection and linked to the intermediate section.
'5. in a sofa-bed, the combination with a main frame and an invertible seat mounted thereon, of a folding-bed carried by the seat and comprising a head-section, a main intermediate section, a foot-section and spacing sections, rockin standards mounted on the seat and capable of limited rocking movement, connections between the headsection and the seat, legs connected with the main intermediate section, links serving to -actuate said legs, legs connected with the movement, connections between the head the seat and capable of limited rocking a movement, and a folding-bed comprising a head-section, a main intermediate sect on, a foot-section and spaclng sections, cam-connections between the head-section and seat,
legs connected with the main intermediate section, links. adapted to fold and unfold said legs in the operation of folcung and unfolding the bed, legs connected with the foot-section, latch-members connected with the foot-section, links-connecting said lastnamed' legs with the outer spacing sections,
and links connecting said latch-members with the outer spacing sections.
8; In a sofa-bed, the combination of a main frame, an invertible seat, a foldingbed mounted on said seat comprising a plurality of foldably-related bed-sections, and link-and-lever mechanism connecting the seat to the main frame, comprising levers pivotally mounted on the main frame and having pivotal connections with the seat, levers pivotally connected with the seat and having slidable connections with the frame, and links joining said levers.
9. In a sofa-bed, the combination-of a main frame, an invertible seat, a foldingbed mounted on, said seat comprising a plurality of foldably-related bed-sections, and link-and-lever mechanism connecting the seat to the frame comprising studs carried by the frame, levers ivotally mounted on said studs and pivotal y connected with the seat, a second pair of studs mounted on the frame, a pair of levers pivotally connected with the seat and having slots engaging said last-named studs, and links connecting the free ends of said levers.
10; In a sofa-bed, the combination of a frame equipped with a pair of rearwardly and upwardly inclined bars, two pairs of studs extending inwardly from said bars, a seat-frame, a pair of levers pivotally connected with the seat-frame and mounted on one pair of studs, a pair of levers ivotally connected with the seat-frame an having slots engaging the other pair of studs, links connecting said levers, and a folding bed mounted on said seat and comprising a plurality of foldably-related bed-sections.
11.
