G. (mums. CAN TOP HOLDER.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 4, 1912. RENEWED OCT. 29, 1913.

WITNESSES: l/Vl/E/V 70/? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE GEDDIS, O1? DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CAN-TOP HOLDER.
Application filed November a, 1912, Serial No. 729,515.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Grouse Gnome, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of l Vayne, State of l /lieliiga1i, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Top Holders; and do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a holder for the tops of fruit jars to enable said tops to be screwed onto and off of the jars at will, and consists in the construction and arrtngtr ment of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for holding the screw tops of Mason jars, or other fruit jars of a similar character, to enable said tops to be readily screwed onto and off of the jars for the purpose of sealing the contents therein or opening the jars so that the contents may be removed.
The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device upon the top of a fruit jar in position for use. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the holder in section. the top of the jar or can in elevation, and the body broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the circular plate within the holder.
Referring to the drawings by the characters of reference marked thereon, 1 designates a cup-shaped member which comprises the holder proper, and which, upon its inner wall, is provided with threads 2 which coincide with, or are of the same trend as the threads 3 of the can top 4. Threaded in the top 5 of the holder 1 is a thumb screw 6 which passes through said top and has a reduced inner end 7 which is swiveled in the counter-sunk aperture 8 (see Fig. 3) of a circular plate 9. Said plate lies within the cup-shaped holder and may be moved therein by a manipulation of said screw.
Projecting from the holder is a handle 10 by means of which the holder may be actuated.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16, 1913.
Renewed October 29, 1913. Serial No. 798,135.
In practice the can top will be screwed into the holder to about the position shown in Fig. 2, when, by turning the thumb screw 6, the plate 9 may be forced against the can top with sn'liicicnt pressure to lock it in the threads of the holder so as to prevent it from turning. By placing the top thus held upon the threaded neck of the can 11 and rotating the holder through the medium of the handle 10, said top may be screwed tightly into place. hen it is desired to open a can the top may be unscrewed by first locking it in the holder as described and then turning the handle 10 in the opposite direction. The pressure which may be eX- erted by said screw is such that the can top may be so firmly locked in the holder as to enable the top to be removed from a can no matter how firmly it may be seated.
This device is of great advantage in canning fruit, as it enables the hot can tops to be firmly screwed into place without the liability of burning the hands.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1.. A can top holder comprising a cupshaped member having a threaded socket into which a can top may be screwed, a movable plate in the socket of the holder, and means for moving said plate against the can top to jam the threads between the can top and holder to lock the can top therein.
A can top holder comprising a cupshaped member, having a threaded socket therein to receive a can top, a screw threaded in the top of said holder and passing into said socket. and a movable plate in the socket engaged by said screw.
3. In a device for the purpose set forth, a holder having a threaded socket therein adapted to receive a can top, a set screw threaded in said holder and extending into said socket, a movable plate within the socket mounted on the inner end of said screw, and. a handle for manipulating said holder.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE GEDDIS.
